We're back! 3/9 - 3/16/2008

My First Novel 3/9 - 3/16/2008

So here it is, the trip of a lifetime! Well, this year's anyway. This was my boyfriend's and my first trip anywhere alone together, so this was the true test of our relationship. I'm proud to say our 3 years together has not been in vain and we did not attempt to kill each other at any point.
I will most likely have to break this up a bit because MAN did I write a lot, but here is the link to all my pictures. I haven't gone through and taken out the bad ones yet, so bear with me here.

I'll start copy/pasting things in the next post. See ya real soon

Day 1: The Bus
We won’t talk about this. It is a boring tale and we had so little sleep that I don’t remember much. We did meet some very nice people that were with us through Fayetteville, NC and Jacksonville, but that’s about it. It honestly wasn’t as bad as we were expecting, but we will never take a bus that far again only due to the fact that we got SO little sleep.

Day 2: The Bus/Pop Century
We arrived in Orlando at about 12:30pm. A very nice gentleman from Tiffany Town cars picked us up from the bus station (which actually wasn’t nearly as scary as the Fayetteville, NC bus station… but that could be because of the masses of security guards around Orlando) and we were off to us northeasterners’ first trip to Publix for some groceries. We had previously used the dining plan with much enjoyment but decided to boycott it this year, so I had only made one lunch reservation at Trails End. We got all kinds of non-perishable food and figured we’d quickly snack our way through the parks.

Our first Florida bug

We were dropped off at Pop, quickly found our room (70s building 10) and went to take a look around and take pictures. Lots of pictures. Then we went to the food court to get our mugs (hate the design, miss the resort specific ones) some hot dogs (well one hot dog and one chili dog) and our first milkshakes of the trip (I vowed to have at least one ice cream every day and milkshakes are easiest to carry.) The picky eater in me was very disappointed to find that the new hot dog buns have some kinda seedy things in them. Unless they’ve been like that for a while and I didn’t get any hot dogs last year, which is entirely possible. But yes, I am a very picky eater and hate bread that crunches, so I ended up eating the hot dog minus the bun… and cheese fries. =) We talked about hitting the MK for Wishes, but we were SO tired that we watched one episode of The IT Crowd while we ate and crashed.

LASER BUNNIES!

Day 3: Epcot
I got up early to take a shower, and went down to the food court to get coffee (they need to get real coffee in WDW for realz) and milk for cereal, and when I got back the boy was still sleeping. So I sat in bed, ate some Cinnamon Life and watched the resort WDW channel even though I 1). don’t like Stacey and 2) downloaded it from Mousebits a year ago and have it on DVD. Once Adam got up, showered and ate, we went down to catch the bus to Epcot. I gotta say, even though it was incredibly busy, we never waited more than 15 minutes for a bus, no matter where we were going to or coming from. The bus system rocks now, and I love that music plays too.
So we got to Epcot around 10:30am and started a photopass card with our first taste of the gorgeous, wandless Spaceship Earth. Then we ran (very glad I brought a knee brace to prevent the hurties before getting home) to get fastpasses for Soarin, and went over to the standby lane of Test Track. It said 20 minutes but it was really almost an hour by the time we got to the preshow. Normally I don’t care at all about waiting in line, but I wanted to make sure we got to Soarin’ in time, so I was kinda nervous. We rode Test Track (Windows Media Player wasn’t working on one of the video screens… very funny) and made it to Soarin’ with half an hour left on our Fastpass time. Yay! Soarin’ was great as always, and we rode with a family whose kids were finally tall enough to go on. The poor kids were terrified, but ended up loving the ride and wanted to go again. Very cute. The rest of the day we pretty much just wandered around and did what came up. We did everything in Future World except The Seas. I still love Ellen’s Energy Adventure even though it’s horribly outdated.
We went on Spaceship Earth 4 or 5 times. I really loved Judy Dench’s voice, but I do agree that the dumbed down version of the dialogue isn’t so great. I think if they’d kept the tone of the original script and used her voice, it would be so much better. And maybe kept the old score. I miss the old Renaissance music. The new AAs amazed both of us though. I loved how easily the scholar teaching math moves, and how the garage you go through even smells like a garage. We laughed like maniacs at the animations at the end of the ride, but both agreed that it does mess with the feeling of the rest of the ride. They should be in Project Tomorrow, not on the ride itself. I will admit though that going down backwards still scares me (the only thing I remember about my first trip as a 6 year old is being absolutely terrified of it) and the video distracted me. So that was a plus. Also, it’s good that it won’t get outdated as quickly as it usually would. But we shall miss thee, Jeremy Irons version.
We walked toward World Showcase and decided to try Beaches and Cream for lunch. That was seriously the best burger I’ve ever had in WDW. That plus a root beer float and I was in heaven. We watched three groups kill off Kitchen Sinks. It’s so cool to watch them make those. If we ever go with at least 4 people in the group, we’re definitely trying one. So we did that and enjoyed walking around the Yacht and Beach clubs.
Then we walked back to World Showcase, seeing some spectacularly horrible spiders in the trees along the way (well I kept walking very quickly after noticing them while Adam, being a man, stopped and took a closer look saying “Come back and look, they’re so gross!” and attempted to take a zoomed-in photo of one on MY poor camera… ew. I should mention that I am not arachnids' biggest fan) and went to find the spot we watched RoE from last year. It turned out to be the little bridge in Italy. So now that we knew where to go, we went off to tour the world. We rode Maelstrom for the first time and were blown away by how much we learned about Norway (that’s… that was sarcasm…) It was pretty silly. But in the shop at the end we met a very nice family who was thinking of moving out to Rhode Island from CA and we discussed the pros and cons for a bit until their kids got bored. We also did Gran Fiesta Tour, which was cute, but again we didn’t learn very much except that Donald is sorta dumb.
After wandering around for a bit, we went and claimed our spot for the IllumiNations. We met some more nice people, and we all sat around and chatted for an hour and a half before the show started. RoE was AMAZING, as usual. It’s still my favorite show in the World. We sat around for a bit before making our way out to the bus to head back and get some sleep.

Day 4: Animal Kingdom & Disney’s Hollywood Studios
We got a bit of a late start that morning and got to Animal Kingdom around 10:45. I was absolutely determined to see the Nemo musical, so we headed straight for it and got seats. I LOVED it. I’ll admit it, I teared up. It’s just an amazingly well done show, definitely a must-see.
After that I knew it would be a bit too late to get a fastpass for Everest, so we checked the wait time (40 minutes) and the FP return time was something like 2:30-3:30 so I decided to just come back another morning and try it. Unfortunately this was before I realized there was a single-rider line. Durh.
So we went to Downtown Disney because we like Planet Hollywood and, hey, we had 3 $15 vouchers so why the heck not go? It’s great for lunch because it’s not busy yet. So we went, had a big lunch (if you ever work up the courage to go, you gotta try the Texas Tostadas, delish) and caught a bus back to the Yacht/Beach club. We walked around a bit more and then took the boat to DHS.
s640x480

s640x480

s640x480

From here we went to get me (Adam can’t do drops) a Fastpass for Tower of Terror which, by the way, ended up being completely unnecessary because when I used it, the people that went in the standby line just ahead of me were in the same preshow room as I was. Oh well. Anyway, got the fastpass and we wandered around for a bit. We went to One Man’s Dream, saw the Muppets, rode Star Tours and watched some Streetmosphere characters all before I went on ToT. After that we debated hanging around a little longer and seeing the Great Movie ride and waiting for our RnRC Fastpasses, but they were for 8:30 and we decided we were too tired, so we gave away our FPs and headed “home” to Pop. Watched some TV and went t’bed.

Day 5: Magic Kingdom
I don’t know how we went three days and three parks without ever setting foot in the Magic Kingdom, but we did. Got there around 10 and we headed on back to Frontierland. There was no wait for Splash (they were even sending empty logs through!) so on I went. We got stuck after the drop for about 5-10 minutes, but everything went smoothly after that. Then we headed over to Big Thunder and, of course, highly enjoyed that. Then we pretty much did what we did in Epcot – wandered around and did what we pleased. Jungle Cruise, Pirates, Haunted Mansion, Carousel of Progress, TTA (oh so many times) ice cream at the Plaza (neither of us likes pineapple enough to try dole whips,) lunch at Casey’s, Monsters Inc (where Adam was THAT GUYYY, he loved it) our first turkey leg… you get the idea, we did all kindsa stuff. Oh and we also walked through the castle for the first time, that was really nice. I actually skipped Space Mountain this time because after riding Disneyland’s I just couldn’t do it. I will wait until it’s refurbed.
I saw a girl wearing a sweatshirt that I was determined to find. It was a white sweatshirt that said on the front left corner “Main St USA” with a small picture of Walt and Mickey, and on the back was a large black & white photo of Disneyland’s Main Street with that same picture of Walt and Mickey on it. I finally found it in the Emporium (really, where else should it be?) They had 20 extra larges out. That was it. I need a small or medium. We looked in every other store on Main St… nothing. Looked in Downtown Disney… nothing. I was very sad, and decided I’d just try to email the mail order service when we got home.
We got a spot for Wishes and our first viewing of Spectromagic – the first little dip on the bridge to Tomorrowland where there’s usually an ice cream cart… well there was no ice cream cart so we pulled up some ground, ate some popcorn and waited. Gradually the little dip filled up and we were packed in. We didn’t really like Spectro much… I know most people like it, but we’re not really parade people. I figured I’d at least like the music… nope. The music was too annoying and repetitive for me. The peacock is pretty cool, but that was about it. Oh well, Wishes was still to come.
Stayed and watched Wishes, then rode Big Thunder one more time before scootin’ out for some rest.
AND here come lots more pictures =)

I saw a family walk off with one turkey leg each. I can't imagine eating that whole thing! Half was plenty enough salt for me

Oh my gosh I couldn't do it! It was way too salty for me. We did end up getting ice cream right after, so it wasn't too much food. Just too much turkey.
Thanks! There should be more coming, but it might not be till tomorrow.

I forgot to mention three things about our MK day. One – don’t sit under trees while seeking shade in Tomorrowland. Sit under the TTA. Adam was poo’d on by a bird of some sort. Not a lot and it was easy to clean off, but still pretty icky. Two – after Wishes we headed for the bus, and it was PACKED. We figured we’d have to wait for at least 5 buses to be able to stand. But what did Disney do? They sent three buses at a time. So when we got in line, there was one bus… then two more came up (two more coach buses, not even Disney buses) all headed for Pop Century. Sweet, we were second in line, but it was still a VERY long line. A couple of minutes later two more coach buses and one more Disney bus pulled up, and they cleared that HUGE line in less than 20 minutes. It was amazing. –golf clap- Then after we got off the bus at Pop a couple came up to us and gave us a rider switch pass for Rockin’ Roller Coaster since they were leaving in the morning. Pretty awesome.

And on we go.

Day 6: Downtown Disney & Epcot
I decided that if I was going to get my nephews gifts, it had to be soon so I could still use the resort pick-up service. So off we went to Downtown Disney. We hit the Christmas shop because I am a huge sucker for Christmas decorations. I got two ornaments for myself, and Adam got one very nice one for his step-mother, who grew up in Southern CA and pretty much lived in Disneyland and who worked at WDW for a year, and also is a sucker for Christmas decorations. I love her. Then we went to World of Disney. I’d never been there. It was crazy busy. I got my little nephews a Main St firetruck (3 year old who wants to be a firefighter) and one of those treasure chests full of pirate booty (6 year old who collects small shiny things.) Great now I just needed something for the 11 year old who only wants video games. It was going to be tough, but then I figured I’d just get him something from the Japan pavilion in Epcot. Good deal. I also looked around for that sweatshirt again, but no dice. Very sad.
We had lunch at Planet Hollywood again and decided it was about time we rode the monorail, so we caught a bus to the Contemporary – my favorite resort.
s640x480

s640x480

So we walked around the Contemporary for a bit because I love it so, and grabbed the monorail to the TTC connecting over to Epcot. We didn’t do much. We got ice cream at the Fountainview, Adam had his first taste of Beverly (mm-mm good) and we sampled all the other sodas. Watermelon FTW. We did Spaceship Earth a couple more times, Energy again, walked through Innoventions and did the Imagination pavilion again. Other than lots of sittin-around people watching breaks, that was pretty much it. We headed out before IllumiNations.
When we got back to Pop, I had some kids macaroni and cheese and Adam had the chicken penne alfredo. The chicken is surprisingly delicious. We watched some more IT Crowd and hit they hay.

Day 7: Three parks, one day
So we headed out super early (9:30am… way too early for us on vacation) so I could ride Everest. Adam wasn’t going to ride, so he gave me his fastpass (mind you, I still didn’t know there was a single rider line.) While waiting for the fastpass time (about an hour) we went to ride Dinosaur because last year it was one of Adam’s favorites. I was reminded how big a baby I am.
s640x480

When my legs stopped shaking, we got some French fries and sat by Everest to listen to the screams for a bit. When my time came, I rode twice in a row with my two Fastpasses, and, having discovered the single rider line, went right on again. Not too shabby. I rode once in the front row, once in the middle somewhere, and once in the back row. The front is cool, I thought my neck was going to snap when I was in the back because my head missed the head rest somehow… the middle was best though.
s640x480

It was Plaid Shorts Day!
s640x480

After that we hopped over to the Studios so I could use the rider switch pass for RnRC. I love seeing first timers’ reactions to the cars speeding off. That’s probably the best part of that ride. Plus riding through a doughnut, that’s pretty cool.
s640x480

And we headed on back to Pop to take a break as it was starting to get pretty hot. We took a short nap and headed back to the Studios to take the boat to the Yacht & Beach club and go to Beaches & Cream again. This time there was about a half hour wait, so we sat on the porch there and watched people in the pool. Then we saw
a whole slew of baby ducks in the pool. There were at least 9 in there. It was crazy. And a little bit gross. I gotta say, I wouldn’t want to be in a pool with a pack of ducks no matter how cute they are.
s640x480

They WERE pretty darn cute though.
So we finally got in and Adam had some huge onion rings with his meal this time.
s640x480

Then we walked over to
s640x480

and I got a Naruto shirt and Pokemon … thing for my 11 year old nephew. I’m not sure what it was exactly, but Adam said it was cool and he sure knows his Pokemon… stuff. So, done and done.
It was getting super drizzly and chilly so we went BACK to Pop so I could change out of my plaid shorts and put on jeans, and we went on back to Epcot for one more round of IllumiNations. We stood sorta near the Odyssey this time so we wouldn’t have to walk alllll the way through World Showcase to get outta there. Luckily it was an EMH night so the buses weren’t as busy as we expected. Anyway, we ended up having all the smoke blow right at us with all the wind and probably should have gone to our regular spot in Italy, but it was okay. You could see the lasers better with the smoke… we just couldn’t really see the globe.
Required Crappy Fireworks Shots

We got back to the hotel and I remembered our lunch reservation at Trails End, oh, about 9 hours too late. WHOOPS.

My daughter got poo in her hair and she was soo grossed out. My hubby yelled at me and said you're sitting under a tree with a bunch of birds in it, what did you expect? :ROFLOL: Next time I'll look up before I stop to rest.

Day 8: Last Day = MagicKingdom
Here it was, always far too soon, the last day of our Walt Disney World trip. Of course we headed out to the Magic Kingdom because, really, that’s what you gotta do.
s640x480

We went right on back to Splash and Big Thunder again just to get them out of the way before it got too busy. Adam decided he wanted to try Splash again because he knows it’s my favorite ride.
s640x480

“I’m glad I did it but I’m never doing it again.” That’s what he said last year too. Liar.
I decided to brave losing my camera and took a couple photos while on Big Thunder.
s640x480

The others have Adam’s forehead in them, so this is the best one. So we rode both once on standby and once with fastpass, and then we headed towards the Haunted Mansion. Rode that, then headed back to Frontierland so we could take the train (we like the train) to Toon Town and walked to Tomorrowland for
s640x480

the most delicious thing on the planet, and a few more rounds on the TTA. We lost count of how many times we rode this and SSE. It was great. I decided Adam needed to go on it’s a small world at least once in his life, so we somehow made our way through the sea of people in Fantasyland and went on.
s640x480

I love this ride. It’s one of my favorites. But I noticed that you can hear the song much better in Disneyland. Anyone else notice this?
After all the people in Fantasyland we were way too hot, so we headed back to the hotel for a break. On the way out of the MK we passed by Town Hall and saw a sign that said there were lunch and dinner openings at The Plaza. We love The Plaza. So while we were on the bus, I called Disney Dining and made a dinner reservation. Great!
Unfortunately it was too early for us to go back to the hotel and mousekeeping was right outside our room. So we hung out here
s640x480

until they left, and we went to have a rest. We headed back to MK after a nap and had dinner.
s640x480

We went around the park doing random things, and got another spot on the bridge to Tomorrowland for Spectro and Wishes. Tink didn’t fly that night due to the wind, but Wishes was still wonderful.
s640x480

s640x480

It was WAY too busy to even think about getting down Main St, and there were still people lined up on the street for the second showing of Spectromagic. So we went through the castle and rode Pooh. This is another one of my favorites. It’s just too cute. Then we got stuck in Liberty Square because the parade was coming up, so we grabbed a funnel cake and some popcorn and demolished them
s640x480

before heading back to the hotel to pack.

Great trip report. Loved your pictures! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! It was a really great trip, even though it was insanely busy and I'm stickin' to early December from now on

OH I forgot to mention how awesome the Haunted Mansion refurb is. It really is incredible. The bride and paintings are spectacular and the ghost host moving around the room is really cool, but the floating Leota head is SO awesome. Unfortunately it wasn't working during our last ride, she was just resting on the table, but the ride is still so so great now.
