Trip Report Well, I guess this is happening... July 12-28 Trip Report - Pre, Live, and Post

Hello and welcome to another Brifraz trip report. If you traveled with us before you know how it usually works - a brief pre-trip outline of plans, lots of live trip reporting, then after the trip some poorly completed scattered posts to try to wrap things up. Well, I'm doing a legit pre-trip this time. Why? Because there are some issues right now. Maybe you didn't realize that?

Which means I'm going to lead off this thread by opening it up to the debate. It's my thraed and I'm okay with that. A little debate will keep things lively - now I'm not talking about something like the thousand plus pages of debate on the mask/precautions/COVID threads, but a little discussion is totally fine and all opinions are welcome. Now, let me be clear I'm not asking I 'what you would do?' But, after reading things below, I welcome opinions on 'what do you think we would or should do.'

Obviously, you can't get into those kinds of discussions without knowing who we are and what we are all about. Here goes. Feel free to steal our identities if you need to.
6e44e73a-9723-4362-bef0-4b69fa60a0c5.JPG

Our crew is a trio. Two nearly-50 year old adults and a 16 year old rising senior in High School. The two adults are high school teachers and have been since the 1990s. Obviously that means our only potential vacation times are summer and Christmas. Two teacher salaries have by no means made us rich, but we prioritize travel. We feel it 'broadens the mind' even if it is somewhere we've been before - always trying new experiences and interacting with new people (heck, we've driven across the USA 3 times and Canada once). You can see in my signature, we head to WDW often and try very hard to make each trip unique in different ways. We had trips in December (with extended family) and January (as leader of over 100 high school kids plus families) and were planning a summer totally away from the World. We had a vague plan to travel to Europe for a few weeks driving through multiple countries. It was going to be the last big family trip before our daughter goes to college. But we just couldn't afford it - there was just no way to make it work. Since we are DVC and have some family-owned timeshare, we can stay at WDW (or that area) for pretty much nothing more than our expected annual fees and we drive from Maryland, so transportation is pretty cheap. Airfare and hotels around Europe was cost prohibitive. Our daughter already has a senior Disney trip planned with friends for next summer and we were possibly doing a couple trip as well, so buying an AP for late this summer through early next summer is also an expense that we expected (although we didn't expect it until next year). Thus, some time in late January, we decided that we would do some smaller trips (including college visits) around the country and then spend a week at WDW.

Sadly, the smaller trips are pretty much all gone due to the current health crisis. But our WDW trip is not until mid-July, so it might still be happening. Health-wise we are all in pretty good shape. Sure, we've got the usual little things that tend to happen as you get close to 50, but nothing that makes our immune systems compromised and certainly nothing that puts us in a higher risk group. As a pair of high school teachers, we get exposed to pretty much every bug that shows up in our communities and in general we weather things pretty successfully. Our daughter currently works at the local grocery store which similarly puts her 'in harm's way' on a regular basis. While the concern over the coronavirus is certainly in our minds, we also are used to taking precautions and have very little innate fear of getting sick. We also have no problem wearing masks or taking other preventative measures if we are traveling.

Why would we even consider still heading to WDW? Well, just like everyone, the past couple months have been tough for us (obviously, far less difficult than for many). We have been relearning how to do our jobs, we've had to cancel 11 major shows/performances (we both teach performing arts), and we're facing the prospect of our jobs/roles changing dramatically in a few months. Our daughter has (again, obviously) missed out on a number of usual things for HS Juniors and is quite concerned about the prospect of her Senior year being very altered. The stress and uncertainty of these things makes the idea of ANY kind of escapism very appealing - even if it is limited and changed from our usual expectations.

There's a little background on us and some elements of where we are coming from with this (possible) trip. For the sake of discussion, let's assume that WDW will be relatively fully open by mid-July, but with significant precautionary measures in place. I'll be back soon with some of our thoughts on the trip and what we might or might not be planning and doing if it happens.

My wife and daughter will be on the road one week from now. My daughter is moving to Jacksonville for her first speech therapy job. I'll be flying down from Philly on Tuesday morning, 7/14 to meet up with them. We'll be moving her in and getting her set up on Tuesday, but then we have three days scheduled at OKW and three days reserved for MK, HS, and Epcot. Also landed some dining reservations which we're looking forward to. It's going to be an unusual experience given the situation. I hope you have a great time.

Really looking forward to reading about your experiences! This trip is coming up fast and I’m almost as excited as I would be if it were my trip.
I am jumping onboard to follow. As a fellow Marylander from St. Mary’s County I wish you all the best of luck in your travels. May you and your family stay safe and also have a fun trip. It seems that as the reopening date approaches fast Disney is not going to delay or it is going to be some last minute decision which I think would be horrible. Not saying it would be horrible from a safety standpoint, but a last minute standpoint it would be. I hope that does not happen. I look forward to following this pre-trip thread and then the actually trip thread.
I’m really excited to hear all about your trip!! Can’t believe it’s almost here! I’m staying at Saratoga Springs next month for the first time. I’m anxious to hear what it’s like there!!
Have a good trip I just returned from our July 4th weekend trip to OKW we had a great time. Lot's of safety precautions from Disney we felt safer at Disney then I do going to a local Publix.

Definitely feel safer with the Disney planned precautions (assuming they are enforced) than with visits to our local Wal Mart. Our local grocery store has actually been very good at enforcing precautions (in our county masks are still required in public places unless eating/drinking) - which makes us very glad since our daughter works there!!

OKW is far and away our favorite resort. The nice, big rooms and the laid back atmosphere really make our Disney trips far more comfortable. We've stayed at SSR before (in fact, the first time my wife went to WDW we stayed in the old Disney Institute before it was SSR) - it's not our favorite, but we like the location for Disney Springs proximity. Our last SSR stay was a little rough b/c we all caught a stomach bug during the visit, so hopefully this time we will all be in good health and spirit and will be able to take advantage of all the resort has to offer.

Nope, we won’t run into you at 50s this summer. In fact none of your plans for week #2 align with ours (unless you happen to find yourselves at MK on the 25th. 😉)

With no Park Hopping happening, I doubt we will be changing plans too much and we have Animal Kingdom for 7/25 right now. We will have to just wave at each other virtually along the way!!

The key is the restrictions being enforced. I sure hope that Disney inside the parks are very strict with all of there policies. They need to make this as safe as possible for all the guests and cast members.

I do have a feeling that they will stay on top of this and hopefully will be able to stay opened. I fully understand the safety precautions in other stores as in my area they seem to have strict rules on entering the stores with a mask, but once in the stores I have seen numerous times folks with the masks hanging around their necks, not covering their noses or totally off and nothing has been said. In those cases I just try and avoid those people as best as I can.

@MeffysMom has been hard at work making us masks for the trip and I wanted to share some of those with you. She still has a few to make, but I'm pretty confident that I have at least one with each fabric in this picture.

Masks.jpg

So, from the top left, across each row, we have:
1 - Mickey/Minnie Nautical, slightly hippie paisley, diamond patterns
2 - Disney Villains, Steamboat Willie, Princesses
3 - Gryffindor, Quiddich, Ravenclaw
4 - Moana, Mickey/Minnie, Marie (Aristocats)
5 - Avengers Icons, Mickey/Minnie Beach, The Incredibles

Have I mentioned how awesome she is?? Eventually we will each have 10+ masks to use. For those that haven't been in a Brifraz trip report before, her sewing is beyond compare. And, if I can brag a little... here are some past pictures! Every one of these costumes is custom made by @MeffysMom (and a nice history of our daughter in costumes). Enjoy.

And that's not even close to all of them! It's been very nice, because most of those costumes would have cost at least $100 from Disney and most of them only cost us about $30 or so in fabric. Okay, enough bragging for today. Suffice to say, we will be suitably masked up for our entire stay.

The resorts and The springs were in sync I expect the parks will be the same if not even harsher they have to get this right at the parks all eyes are watching them.

I agree, especially with the numbers now going through the roof not only in Florida, but many places within the United States. If or when WDW opens and the cases rise even more and there are especially signs that it has not been strictly enforced then that would be a disaster. Disney has to do this completely the correct way.

Love all the costumes! My sewing skills are limited to an occasional button or knee patch. The masks are awesome. I definitely prefer the pleated ones, but variety will be good. And having lots is better than not.

If I may ask? Are you AP holders? If not why would you pay full price for a 25% experience? Have fun and BE SAFE

Yes. Mentioned in the first post that we bought APs earlier this year, but they aren't activated yet. With DVC and RCI, a trip to Disney is actually most likely the cheapest vacation we could take - our rooms are already paid for and we'd be leaving points (money) on the table if we didn't use them this year.

I'm not sure I would characterize the current situation at WDW as 25% experience. Yes, we will definitely miss fireworks and some of the live shows, but we don't really do character experiences that much anymore. Park hopping and Extra Magic Hours are nice perks, but to us, not a reduction in experience. Limited crowd size during July (we are used to 9+ crowd levels every day of our trips) ends up actually being a positive - and certainly good for our safety. In terms of our normal plans vs our plans this trip, I'd say we are actually losing about 25% of what we normally do. So, our experience is most likely about 75%.

We will do our best to be safe! Can't quite control what the rest of the guests do, but we will do our best to avoid those who appear to be making the highest ration of poor decisions. After nearly 30 years in public education, we are pretty good at identifying things and people that could be a problem from a distance.

Yes, when we go in Nov, we will miss: fastpasses, EMH's and some shows/characters but I still think it can be pretty magical without those things. It will just make it more special, if/when when that comes back eventually. I am just looking forward to getting away with my husband for a week and enjoying our happy place in a different way.

Changed the title of this Trip Report as it will now be moving to a Pre-LIve-Post Trip Report. And at this point there really isn't the question of 'will it happen and do we want it to happen' - it's going to happen and we are going to make the best of it and be as safe as we possibly can.

I know that many are very concerned about the prospect of going to an amusement park in Florida in the current situation, but, to be brutally honest, I feel just as safe... if not safer... at WDW as I do at home. Assuming that they are enforcing their own rules, it's certainly going to be better than around here. Yes, we are in a county where masks are required in public places, but not everyone is following those rules and nobody is enforcing them. IF WDW is enforcing their rules, it will be a better situation to be in the park than in the local Wal Mart (which I'm very lucky to have only needed to visit once in the last 4 months).

I definitely will miss fastpasses. We've used and abused that system to the best of our possible ability. But that does make us look forward to this trip as a unique adventure!

The pleated don't work so well for me with my glasses. I need the larger ones with the part that moves up over the bridge of my nose. That way, I can 'pin' it under the nose pieces of the glasses and not have to deal with fogging. My daughter really likes the pleated ones and uses them at work each day (she works in the local grocery). Thankfully @MeffysMom caters to each of our wishes and needs!!

I do wish you the best and definitely the safest of trips. I also feel Disney has to step up and enforce these rules or this is going to be a total disaster. I however believe that enforcing these rules will be somewhat easier at the resorts than while inside the parks. I think getting into the parks Disney will make 100% sure everyone is prepared to follow all of the rules they have set. Once the guests are in the parks it is going to be much harder to enforce the rules at a rate that will be on top of the many of the guests who do not decide to follow the rules. Even if the capacity of the parks are lower there is still going to be quite a lot of guest especially within the first week of re-opening. Unless they really add a lot more Cast and Security around the parks there is no way the regular amount of cast will be able to enforce the rules properly. That is what I fear. I do hope you have a wonderful vacation and especially a safe one and cannot wait to continue to hear about it.

I'm pretty sure I recall @marni1971 implying in another thread that there was going to be a different layer of CM/Security tasked with rule enforcement. I may have misread or interpreted his message, but I do trust his insight. The hope and perhaps trust that Disney will be enforcing things definitely weighed on our decision to go ahead with this trip.

I seem to get a lot more fogging of my glasses with the non-pleated ones! Everyone’s face is different, so different masks work differently. I’m glad you have variety. I’m looking forward to your continued reports!

Agreed! Depending on how well Disney enforces the rules, I feel way safer there than I do here at home where very few people are wearing masks. I think Disney will really try hard to enforce the mask rules, although I do wonder as @Mickey Pride says how they are going to enforce it in the parks...I can see CM's "reminding people," but that doesn't do diddly. So I hope they really do enforce it for safety's sake.
