WDWMAGIC Takes the Cake - The Official Cake Talk

sxeensweet

Love a little Disney every day!! ;)
Me again! Okay a while back I asked for some Grumpy cake pics. I am about to start the process of ordering one for when we dine in the castle on my DH's bday. Below is the one I liked the best but I would want it to focus more on grumpy/Snow White. Is there anyway you can sketch something for me as you do such a good job of it when you have some extra time? If not and you do not have time that's fine it does not hurt to ask right! Lol. Here is the example cake...

It just hit me that I have been totally shirking my Cake Talk responsibilities! Not sure if it's the accident mess, the disappointment over our recent cakes, trip report stuff, or what.

When are you looking to reach out to place your cake order? That will determine whether or not I have the time to sketch. The reality...I probably could use a distraction tomorrow. It likely will be more of a rough sketch as I'll be at work, but it'll help get my mind off of cruddy things that our out of my control.

OK... I have my own two recent cakes to post about, but I'm going to devote a post to those as I have a lot to say. It's probably nothing I haven't already said in my trip report, but still needs to be said. Not sure if I'll post it tonight...but I'll add them on here soon.

Also, @coachwnh and @Jessica Meier - I know you both had recent cakes. Would you mind if I posted them?

I totally forgot about y'all's accident on the way to going on your trip! Hope you are all still doing okay and that everything is getting resolved quickly for you!
I do not have to make my order yet. You have time and you are so sweet to even think about doing that for me with all you have going on!! Our trip is not for 5 weeks. 12/5-12/16 and my DH bday is 12/7. You really don't have to if you are overwhelmed with things right now! I mean that. I totally would understand.

I'm looking forward to pics and what you have to say about the cakes you got.

I'll be posting in a little bit. I wish it were positive, but sadly...we were pretty disappointed. :(

:)

Unfortunately, the accident stuff has been a nightmare...which is why busy-work like sketching can help. I'm at a point where I've done just about everything I can possibly do...just so hopeful that I get the auto settlement this week so I can finally buy a new vehicle. I have to sketch a cake for next week anyways...so, I might as well sketch 2 cakes to help pass the time between work items. :)

Thanks so much and I hope it helps you zone out and go to a happy place for a little while at least! Lol.
Oh my DH's name is Andre and I would have the standard Happy Birthday Andre but with a smiley face maybe underneath the writing b/c I always put those on things like cards and such. Silly I know and if you think it does not look right you can eliminate it. Lol I really like a lot of that cakes elements even the coal car that's lit up but I just didn't know where to go from there to tweak it to spotlight grumpy and maybe add Snow white(me haha). :) Thanks again!

OK, so time for me to address the cakes we had for our trip last month.

First up, my mom's cake...

This is the better of the 2 cakes. I say better because there are still issues.
1. I asked for buttercream with fondant decorations. This is clearly all fondant. Not only is my mom not a fan of fondant (specifically asked that I not get fondant)...it increases the price.
2. The measuring tape hashes are very sloppy.
3. I don't know what they were talking about with there not being enough room on the tapes. I could have EASILY written the message on the tapes as I'd requested ... it's just a matter of using a fine tip brush.

All in all, my mom loved the cake and it at least looked like enough of my vision to make me happy.

My cake was a disaster. I will preface this by saying that I do intend to complain, but it's low on my priorities right now. I think my sketch is on the previous page of this thread...I'm not sure what happened, but I hated my cake...

Where do I begin???????????

1. I'm not sure why they made a backdrop edible image of the Disneyland queue. My sketch was nothing like this...it only isolated that one part in the center with the face and pretty much screamed "not an edible image." Sad, but I had a nightmare pre-trip that they'd drop the ball and do something like this. Even the height/perspective is completely wrong.
2. I have no idea why Donald has a sun around him
3. All of the Mary Blair concept art requested around the base was completely omitted
4. The 40 mouse ears on the front look more like odd rabbit ears
5. The hand painted details are very sloppy
6. There is no combo of gold and silver like I'd requested ...an extremely obvious detail in the queue
7. I have no idea how they warped the idea of "white, silver & gold basic shapes- like triangles and rectangles in the queue" to be odd edible images put together like my kids' collage projects - well, except for that awkward white rectangle in the mess of strange images
8. The cake flavor was wrong. Yes, we debated fillings, but the actual cake flavor never changed in any of this... well, until they decided to neglect that request as well.

The only bright spot...if you want to call it that...was Donald. I at least knew ahead of time that they wouldn't dress him in a lei and hula skirt. I'm not sure why as it's a fairly simple process and there is a ton of Disney licensed merch with Donald dressed as such. Still- he was the best part of the cake + they didn't charge me $115 for him like YC/BC will often charge for painted Donald.

All in all, the cake felt like one big lazy copout. I would have just appreciated some honesty...if they couldn't handle my requested design...they should have just told me no. I had a far more simple Plan B that I would have liked a lot better than this mess.

Part of me feels bad for being so harsh in my words, but I'd be embarrassed to charge anyone for a cake like this...especially when a sketch and detailed instructions were involved. I'm sure someone worked hard, but it just wasn't even close to what I'd requested. Sorry for such a Debbie Downer cake post, but after making it to WDW after such an awful start to our vacay...it really upset me that my cake was so ugly. :(

The good news...I think the kids are going to do some kind of Small World themed party. Sometimes when you want something spectacular done right...you just have to do it yourself! ;)

Whoever did these cakes obviously has not had the proper training and must not have much pride in their work. These do not meet Disneys standards in my opinion! You see these awesome cakes and then someone does work like this?! No offense but whoever did these they need to not let them do anymore until they get more training and practice first. o_O:cautious:

Um wow, where do I begin?? I agree the first one I would be happy with. I do agree they could have easily wrote the lettering on the tape, but ok whatever. I also feel they could have made the carousel horse on the cake too. But whatever, overall it still was a pretty cake. Now, for the 2nd cake
Do you mind me asking how much you paid for each cake? I would absolutely express my dissatisfaction and get reimbursed partially for that.

What is with all of the screen printing of images on the cakes? While I understand that it is a time saver, for the amount charged for the cakes you would think that they would be able to do more with fondant. While I would classify my own abilities as "intermediate" with cake decorating, in many cases I feel I could do a better job than Disney has on some of these cakes. I would have a hard time justifying spending over $100 on a cake knowing that I could probably do a better job.

Sorry to read the post about your cake experience. After reading through this thread I was expecting a lot and I'm disappointed for you in how things turned out. So, I was hoping for your opinion on an approximate cost of a cake posted earlier in the thread. I've attached a copy of the pic. My husband and I are celebrating our 15th anniversary in February and will be dining at California Grill to celebrate. I'm hoping this would be available there. Thanks in advance for thoughts.

It's so yucky. We're about to hit the 45 day mark since the accident and I'm still in a rental :( Praying the insurance payout hits before the weekend so I can finally shop for a new ride. At least the medical part is fairly easy... for now.

I started sketching, but got a little side tracked with something else fun...shopping. :D Still, I'm hoping to have a finished sketch by tomorrow or Friday. I'll probably tackle the name part last, but I think I can work in Grumpy, Snow and a coal car.

Mine is just so sloppy and poorly executed. I know there have been some staffing changes since our last cakes, but it's amazing that my cake came from the same bakery as those previous cakes. :( I don't know if it was training or what, but it was certainly upsetting and unacceptable.

The first one, while not perfect, is good enough for me to forgive the errors. That 2nd cake was $152 before the tax and auto gratuity. While most people think it's unacceptable, I've actually had a few people say it's not that bad or that they actually liked it...some even implying that I'm being overly critical and dramatic. I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I think it's pretty bad. I fully intend to reach out to them, but I just don't have the sanity for it right now. Battling insurance companies is zapping everything I've got at the moment.

It's really frustrating when they're supposedly professionals. I don't really know how I'd classify my caking abilities, but I know that the bulk of my decorating requests for this cake weren't particularly advanced. The only saving grace with the price is that I know the hand painted 3D white chocolate Donald should have cost me around $115 - even without the cake.
