WDW Monorails have reopened

Sorry if this is not the right place for this, but isn't there some kind of fail safe system that was supposed to prevent this from happening. Not really sure where I heard this, if one monorail get to close to another that it was supposed to automatically apply the braking system.

I'll be quite surprised if Disney doesn't make an announcement as to what exactly happened. I don't think it's unfair for anyone to want to know. 150,000 ride that system every day. I'd like to be reassured before my family steps foot on it again.

The systems have to be put into manual override mode to switch tracks; both Pink and Purple would have needed this since Pink would have normally come into (relatively) close proximity with Purple anyway.

Yesterday's reports from monorail drivers seem to be correct.

I don't believe there is any way they would be back in service this quick if OSHA didn't have a good idea of what happened and was sure it wouldn't happen again. So that is good news.

However I'm speculating on that but probably not much.

Right. It seems they might know the issues, and could have already addressed them, seeing they put in new sensors this morning.

according to all of the local news channels at noon, the monorail was still not running. one of the networks had their helicopter overhead and showed long lines for the ferry and there were busses available from the TTC. they did show monorails parked at the station and one at the poly, but they were not operating.

I much as I hate the Orlando Sentinel here's a quote:

"Walt Disney World is reopening its monorail system today -- with new safety sensors added to monitor track switches, according to a note to employees this morning."

Basically confirms what we were discussing in the other thread the Pink wasn't switched to the correct track - IMO

Wow, that was QUICK

Sort of blows my "CM Standing under the switch" idea out of the water.

Of course a CM COULD be called a sensor ........ :)

First, and appropriately, I'd like to express my condolences for the Wuennenberg family. Having a 21 year old son myself I can not fathom the grief they are experiencing at this time.

Now, as far as the safety of the system goes, my wife, kids and I would be standing in line to ride with the driver of the next train to leave the station if we could. We are talking about a system that has now had 1 casualty all while transporting millions of guests per year and logging enough miles to travel to the moon and back over 25 times.

I wish I could take that "express highway in the sky" to work every day of the week instead of driving US-23; that 20+ mile stretch of battered infrastructure that my state likes to call a highway.

are both beams working or is the one still down because of being hit by lightning?

Did this actually happen? We were there after this "supposedly" happened and everything was running fine. We even rode up front and my husband asked the driver about it and he didn't know what we were talking about.
