WDW during a Recession / Economic Downturn

Good to know that the drops in air travel that has Delta pulling its business forecast won’t impact Walt Disney World.

It’s kinda funny… when all this started, and it was mostly us Canadians talking of changing our travel plans, a lot of people were like “whatever”. Now I’m starting to see the panic set it. Palm Springs is erecting banners saying “We Love 🇨🇦”. Airlines realizing bookings are down. Hoteliers on the news showing off all the cancellations.

And now you see many other countries citizens are joining and changing travel plans.

It’s hard to know what is going to happen, but I do believe the US is certainly facing a tourism recession this year.

Mayor Buddy Dyer of Orlando recently expressed concern on the drop off in Canadian tourists visiting Central Florida. The bread and butter of revenue is tourism. Delta is cancelling the 4x a week flights from UK to Orlando MCO which is not good.

Yep.

This doesn't seem to have been mentioned in the thread until now.

It's a double whammy of potential recession AND a drop in global tourism demand.

Disney is big enough to weather the storms however. They've always been profitable even when attendance was much lower comparatively and hours were longer. They certainly have become more efficient at squeezing profit out of people but they have plenty of breathing room.

Smaller business, especially in border towns, which live or die on tourism are another story.

sure WDW can be less mobbed but fewer offerings hours services etc and not all offerings 7x a week. Aka post 9/11/01.

The reservation system really facilitates this as well. The system is not so much about crowd control as it is about adjusting service levels to match the crowds.

Attendance is down? Disney can run less coaster trains for example so that wait times remain stable.

Yes and less attendance then less cast needed to be scheduled to work.

But only AP holders have to make reservations.

If Disney wanted to show higher attendance for the sake of attendance all they need to do is to remove all PPRs and remove some blackout days from APs
