Love the post, but sadly I think Costco does indeed lost money on this; its a thing retail does to bring in customers to purchase other things. Somebody please check me on this.
Yes, it’s called a “loss leader” and I think, (someone can fact check this), I believe Costco has their own plant that manufactures the hot dogs which cuts down on their costs…

Loss leaders are a notorious tactic…and delivers consistent results

The cds at the front of the electronic stores come to mind in the 80s/90s.

Disney…especially In parks…needs a few loss leaders

It would help alot to take the stink off.

They used to employ not necessarily “loss leaders”…but definitely “break evens” to drive profits in other directions.

It was smart business.

Many countries rely on tourism to support the economy with the obvious exception of Barcelona. The locals are so disgusted with guests crowding and enjoying their beautiful city.
I live in a heavy tourist area, and get their frustrations. You can dislike the traffic, behavior, and other problems caused by overcrowding while still appreciating and not taking for granted the tourist dollars which keep your town afloat. Definitely wouldn't recommend chasing them away with protests or harassing them like some areas have done before. Their disposable income is necessary.

Nobody beats the Wiz!!

You could argue that the Magical Express was a loss leader (and WE ALL KNOW how that turned out)…

Seems like we will end up in a recession sooner than later. I believe the last time we almost were, but consumer spending kept us out of one. It seems like this will not be the saving grace of the economy this time around.....

During a recession cash is king where the saavy investors buy on the cheap when many are suffering . I remember the recession 2008-10 all too well. Its wasnt just the poor that had their lives drastically changed.

Are you referring to those that chose to live at their credit limits' ability to fuel lifestyle ?
