WDW Awakens ...

Did the company report the latest cutback to the 'media' contingent?

The one @wdwmagic did? That Star Wars pyro is being cut from nightly to four nights a week in May. Nope. not savings there, right?

And the blogging whores chow down on free food ... anyone know where? And has Georgie K made an appearance?

The blogging whores all raved how WONDERFUL lunch was at Morimoto today. No mention of the 5th price increase there since it opened in October. What are the chances?

I look at it this way. Disney is 3 years from being where it needs to be. After Avatar, SWL, Toy Story Land, and all of the other little things are complete Disney will be back to normal. The problem is they started 5 years too late and won't finish for 3 more years. They need to be planning now for what goes beyond those new areas and ready to implement those changes immediately after completing these.

Normal?!?!

What exactly do you mean by that?

Because WDW can't ever go back to the glory years of the mid-70s-mid-90s ... and they steadfastly refuse to go back to the mindset of quality that gave people the Vacation Kingdom of the World.

Are you saying that in five years, assuming ISIS doesn't kill us all or global warming doesn't make WDW all swamp again, that things will be better at WDW than now? That may well be true. But I really don't see how they could possibly be worse.

Then methinks @WDW1974 exaggerates when he talks about the bloggers and local lifestylers who go to this thing. I'm sure those people get invited, but they're not the reason the event exists.

No, I don't. They are worse than what I write, but I refuse to get into urinating contests with them by singling them out unless they do something so out there that there is no choice.

Largely, today, they are the reason these things exist. Mommy Bloggers, lifestylers, podcasters will outnumber real media at these events (and that is even including your local radio station broadcasting from WDW) by a large margin now because what's left of media has largely determined that being under Disney's thumb isn't worth showing up for these 'events'.

This is a very weird time in history for TWDC. Especially for the parks. Never before have we seen "plussing" by removal on such a large scale. Now will WDW be great again in 5/6 years? It sure can be. But the jury is still out. We really wont know the effects until much later. With Bob Weis in charge of Imagineering and WDW's 50th coming up, this could be a very long 5 years of construction. But it may be better than ever once its all done. The problem is that they are not willing to reinvest in their current attractions and theme parks and "plus" those while they can before beginning the Construction Age for good. I for one am excited for what is coming, and yes even though there may be problems with TDO or TWDC, we are really finding small things to get angry over, when really if we do not visit for a year or two again, that way new things we know are coming, we wont be disappointed. For the people who go once every 4/5 years, the place is still amazing. Its the hardcore fans who go twice a year that find the small problems, cause things may be different. Sorry rant over.

I don't find fundamental differences in the way a beloved company operates and treats its Guests, fans and cast to be "small things."

Again, though, I do understand what Disney quality used to mean and what it means today. I am no rube.

Where oh where did Disney's PR and marketing wizs come up with that? Oh yeah ... sorta like when they discovered Frozen a year after it became the highest grossing animation feature of all time.

Yes, the Awakenings deal came from the mediocre Star Wars: The Force Awakens and They Won't Ever Let You Forget It film. (Ssshhh ... you do all know Darth Vader is supposed to be in Rogue One Civil Infinity Jungle Book Wars 2, right?)

Well, today is supposedly the start of a three day WDW whorefest ... I mean ... media showcase for real reporters ... OK, can't do that with a straight or even a bi-curious face. Nope, it is designed for social media 'influencers' (why is the EPCOT Explorer not invited? The boy has 17,000 Twitter followers ... and I'll bet a few thousand are likely real human beings).

The event was meant to showcase all the new things -- hey, stop snickering ... compared to almost any year since Robert A. Iger took over TWDC -- melding the company in his bland as white bread image -- Disney actually does have new product going into its parks in the swamps this year and a good 15% of it actually doesn't replace anything that existed before.

The problem is Disney is spending millions of dollars to showcase things that are not ready for primetime (or anytime that isn't after Shanghai DL opens and the new fiscal quarter begins) so they will have all these fine folks, staying for free, dining for free, boozing for free, coming back to their rooms to find swag bags on their beds, obviously, for free with the following new summer 2016 offerings:

RoL;
ToL show;
Night safari experience;

New Star Wars pyro and projection show;

Frozenstrom;
Soarin Over The World;

MK stage show;

None of these things are ready or open, so it will be interesting to see what happens. RoL apparently can be run in sort of a manual mode for, perhaps, a piece of a show. And it may be possible that one Soarin theater could show a preview of the new film. I am reasonably sure Disney can do the new SW show (has it started for real yet? I have had to take leave of the fan community goings on of late and may have missed its debut.) for a private party. And they likely could do much of the new MK show in a Contemporary ballroom.

But still this is a first. I have never seen WDW stage one of these pricey, huge whorefests with none of the products it is touting ready to roll. Should be an interesting few days, which is why I started this thread.

Please put any/all 'news' that comes out of Awakenings right here, so I ... I mean ... we can mock them appropriately or cheer Iger and Chappie on for the remarkable way they have systematically -- and with intent -- made WDW even worse than it was a decade ago.

That wasn't easy, but they sure have done a bang up job. And let's not forget the roles played by the "puckish gladhander" or "the oddly waifish man of anemic personality" and their roles in this trash pile as we move forward. And remember, this is a slow year for the competition. UNI is only opening one E-Ticket new attraction (not replacing anything, but empty land) and a new resort hotel and SW is only opening what will be the top coaster in O-Town.

This should be entertaining ... or I could just keep looking at that cute 'wittle Dakota boi who keeps putting up every Shanghai pic he can find on the Tweeter almost like he was gunning for a job as ... as ... as a Disney exec's boy on the side!

Nah, WDW is the best, the boss, the flagship ... let's hear about how Disney is going to blow ... our socks off (hopefully, mostly of those UKers who wear them with sandals and look ridiculous, right @marni1971?)

Let's have some news as WDW ... Awakens.

I stopped reading after you said Force Awakens was mediocre. REALLY??!?!?!!

its probably one of the best scripts that has been written in a very long time, the casting is amazing, the acting was amazing, probably one of harrisons best performances as well and totally blew away my expectations after watching Crystal Skull and thinking he'd lost his touch.

all in all though, i've decided to stop visiting these forums, i loved them at first, but then realised that 90% of people here just hate on WDW and i don't want to hear all the little details that i will notice when i go in May.

Chow!

Spirit @WDW1974, Do you think the relentless cutting is finally starting to affect WDW attendance not to mention the effects of Oil prices on south america.

It sure looks that way. They can -- and will -- spin this any way possible. I already see record profits for the quarter being announced.

But take a look at the 'crowds' in March. They were way down.Take a look at all the blockouts being lifted for Florida residents and cast. Take a look at all the high-priced upcharges added of late ... just in time to add to the bottom line.

I think WDW is experiencing softness in the market because you can't full most of the people all of the time.

Agreed! And I do have to say, these forums used to be so much better without WDW1974, and all the other folks on here who do nothing but moan endlessly. I have decided to stop visiting these forums as well, even though I have paid occasional visits here.

Sooooo, you're expecting professional ethics and unbiased reporting from the owners of fan sites? Like that'll ever happen. They are addicted to the dust, and would NEVER, EVER screw over their dealer.

Not just that.

If Disney handled social media in a genuine and professional manner, then most of these losers would have to either get jobs or lives or both ... and these people are largely social misfits who only have any self-esteem at all because they enable each other.
No, you wanting a photo with a foamhead as something you must have isn't normal or healthy if you are 33. ... Not unless you are very special needs.

This theory was discussed in the Rivers of Light thread, but I find it hard to believe.

If you've already sunk significant costs into development, why not run the comparatively minor costs of operations to see some return on investment? If not, what was the point of R&D at all?

I can come up with some theories but none of them are good.

Sorry, but I can't explain how and why Disney does what it does. Or any large company for that matter. My brain can't compute the levels of stupidity, waste, avarice and lack of simple common sense shown by American corps in 2016.

But there are reasons why we are headed into May with no opening dates being given for ANYTHING at WDW.

Last time I was at Magic Kingdom I was in line with my sister cause she wanted to meet Aladdin and one guy ahead of us asked him to record a message for a friend saying "congratulations on 10 years of your podcast" and then he just left with no picture. I wasn't paying much attention but my sister said even Aladdin had an expression of "that was weird." Lifestylers......
