I went to Dollywood today and their railroad is amazing! The extraordinarily loud whistle of the steam locomotive echos off the mountains and comes back into the valley where the park is and it makes for an unforgettable experience! It makes me really miss the WDWRR!

I would have thought they switched to oil by '38. Were most locomotives still running coal at that point?

Not a locomotive expert by any means but from what I can find coal was still used and seems to have been in wide use up till around the 1960s, at least on freight lines, not sure about passenger lines. But like I said not an expert so I could have missed something

Switching to oil wasn’t about modern - it was about what fuel sources were available. The N&W built the J class steam locomotives to burn coal in 1950 because the N&W was operating in Virginia.

There are people in this area (just south of coal country) that still use it for heating, the smell of it last winter was foul

IIRC, Glen Campbell told a story of how his family stayed warm during the winter by gathering cast off coal near the railroad tracks. Thanks @EricsBiscuit for sharing those photos. Lots of memories that engine could tell!

Since the thread has popped back up- anyone hearing a timeline of when the train will be running again? Seems like Tron Construction has really ramped up- so hoping soon!

Caught old no. 1 testing from all sorts of angles! These are just a small fraction of about 2 HOURS worth of video I captured of Walter, Lilly and Roy! I spent 3 DAYS running between the 3 stations! I practiced filming a lot on Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress (which I fell in love with and learned so much about in the time the railroad was closed) with filming just so I was ready when the train reopened so my shots would look as GREAT (and big and beautiful) as possible! Truly, the railroad running again is the BEST Christmas present I’ve never asked for (I always thought it would be ready when Tron was ready)! Words can’t describe how excited and happy I was the very moment I saw Walter for the first time in years (I wanted to (and almost did!) cry, I was SO happy and overjoyed)! I was what some would call a foamer in that moment!
Alas, I rant and ramble, but the railroad has a very profound and deep meaning to me as the rails are part of my heritage (so it comes as no surprise that I am indeed a railfan)!

If the magic kingdom were larger and or had a steeper grade or heavier trains, I imagine we’d have engines like these! But that’s not to say that Walter can’t haul more than usual! I’ve seen a video of him EFFORTLESSLY pulling his train AND lilly’s (that’s TEN cars!) with one or two cars loaded with at least 2 big sand bags each! Back on the subject of “What if?” though, I imagine the challenge there might be trying to make an old WP&YR WWII vet belong in the Wild West or even a classic Main Street of yesteryear. If it were done, I’d imagine we may have to make some sacrifices for what we have now due to operating costs (maybe we stick with the old mark iv monorails and never upgrade, maybe splash mountain isn’t constructed after all, or maybe the fans get their happily ever after as we never closed GMR or Ellen or even Horizons!)

Same here! I am pretty sure I’m related on one side to the Baldwin family of Baldwin Locomotive Works fame.
Lilly can pull all the WDWRR rolling stock up a grade fully loaded at speed. All of them are very powerful locomotives.

Sure explains the loud bark I heard at one time when Walter was pulling out of fantasyland during testing (maybe the engineer showed off a bit much there)! there’s no power like railroad power or even steam power! Now that you mention Lilly and her ability, I wonder if any of the engines could pull all of animal and Magic Kingdom’s coaches in one train fully loaded! I know animal kingdom’s engines couldn’t even haul close to what the Baldwin quartet can (not without two or all three working together at least)!

Roy #4 seems like he has a different whistle. Not as deep as it was. Like when he had the whistle from Joe Fowler.
Just saw a video of Roy from the 29th. It appears that he’s now wearing the Lonergan 3 inch 3 chime.
