Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

A friend heard that Disney Visa will have a discount for the regular registration. I haven't heard anything but too late for me I guess.

We need to petition runDisney to bring back the morning Epcot portion and take out some of that ESPN Maze of Infinity. I'd rather deal with the Osceola Hairpin from Hell. Spaceship Earth and World Showcase in the morning is amazing.
Justice prevails! :D Hope this is the case. We'll find out next week.

I just looked at the Boston Qualifying times. I might qualify when I'm in my 70s or something. MAYBE. Probably not. :p

My dad asked me the other day why I don't run the Boston marathon and I laughed really hard before explaining to him the whole qualifying criteria thing. Since Disney is such a flat course lots of people use at as a BQ. I would be so pained running past empty character lines (before the masses arrived) if I was trying to BQ there.

@Katherine - If I was in the area I would totally go up to the expo, I have been seeing photos all over social media and it looks pretty badass (free beer samples from Sam Adams, lots of pros out signing autographs, lots of very cool Boston only merch)

I also like the old(er) course way more than the WWOS one. I only ran it once, but I didn't think that the out-and-back on Osceola was an issue; it was certainly no worse than the 3+ miles in/around WWOS during the worst miles of the race. From online comments, it seems like most people hated the out-and-back, but it seems like pretty standard fare for any marathon anywhere; at least it was relatively short and was right around mile 20, which is really the last major mental hurdle

But I agree that it seems unlikely from a logistics standpoint that they would bring the old course back. Still, that hasn't stopped me from some carefully worded responses in the post-race surveys

In other news, I officially signed up for Dopey yesterday! If all goes according to plan, I'd like to keep legacy status on that for as long as possible

Reminder - early registration for APs (and I assume DVC members) ends at 8PM tonight! The 10K is closed to AP holders.

Gulp! That means that I will be elbowing my way (virtually of course) to get my slot tomorrow at 12 est. Which also means I have approximately 24 hours to decide which race to sign up for, currently doing a pro/con list on Goofy vs. Dopey.

I was questioning if I register tomorrow but I am running several races between then and January, could I or do I need to update my proof of finish time and will this improve my corral placement??? Then, I was reading that your proof of time is not used to determine corral placement - it's what you put as your anticipated finish time. The proof of time just validates you have finished a recent race within the required time/pace. That would actually explain why you can encounter walkers/slower runners in the forward corrals. Thoughts?

That's exactly what I did! They have charity runners do the race too, right? :D That's realistically the only way I'd ever get in.

I think there may be. Unless I'm personally connected to the charity somehow I wouldn't go that route. Entry into Boston is something you need to earn.

Oh, I completely agree! I have all the respect in the world for charity runners, but like you said, it would have to be something I'm personally connected to. Wouldn't feel right otherwise.

Your corral placement is primarily based on your anticipated finish time. Granted, if you say you're going to finish the marathon in 3 hours and your proof shows that you took 7 hours to do finish a marathon, that won't work, but as long as your goal time is reasonable with your proof, you're fine

You can also email runDisney after registration is you have a faster proof time. As I discovered last year, you can update your time for multiple races with a single email

What to do?? I am considering the Dopey Challenge for 2015 and am torn...... I have some issue with my right leg that makes running harder than it used to be. I keep plugging right along though. I have a marathon on my bucket list and what better race than a Disney race! My first 1/2 marathon was the Wine & Dine and it was awesome! My biggest "hurdle" for deciding on running a Disney marathon has been traveling expenses.... However, my DD has been accepted into the Disney College Program and will be checking in at Disney in just about 6 weeks... Guess when her scheduled departure date is? Well, it's January 7th, 2015..... So I guess that hurdle has been overcome..... Now comes a reality check on excuses. I think it's just plain fear or nerves............

Sorry to hear about your leg issues. :( Congrats to your daughter!

Would this be your first marathon? For me personally, I felt like I had to know I could train for and complete a marathon - just a marathon (because Disney has made "just the marathon" a commonly used phrase now by introducing these challenges :p) - before going Goofy (Dopey wasn't a thing yet...I'm talking 2012/2013). I thought being in shape to make it through a marathon-only weekend physically would be the biggest benefit before going on to Goofy, but I found that the mental part was really the most helpful - training didn't seem as daunting because I'd done it before. Finishing the marathon the day after the half seemed possible because I had already done a marathon once. I don't think there's any way I would have tackled my first marathon as part of the Dopey Challenge. But I know plenty of people do it, and do it successfully. :)

Good luck with your decision!

They most certainly do. Lots of the charities are local to Boston, and plenty require you to do team training runs and stuff. But it's also a huge fund raising commitment. I seem to recall it being around a $5k minimum.

 WOW! My hat's off to anyone that has the drive to raise that amount of money while also training for the marathon.

The $1000 Runner's World Challenge for Dopey has just sold out. I think people were getting nervous that they wouldn't make it in and paid the extra $400 for peace of mind. T-minus 23 minutes...

Still undecided on Goofy/Dopey, the pro/con list did not help my indecisive nature.

Wow.

What swayed me to Dopey vs. Goofy was the 10K - love the Minnie medal and I like how the course looks. So if I was going to do Goofy anyway and want to do the 10K, may as well throw the 5K in there to get the 5K medallion/shirt and the Dopey medal/shirt.

I think the Goofy would be enough for me, but my wife wants to run her first 5K, and no way would I miss the chance to run with her and have our photo taken at the finish line. So that just leaves the 10K, and like @Ariel484 said, it's just one race away from the full Dopey, so I may as well go for it.

T-minus 11 minutes...
