Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend

@dreamfinder - thanks for the report, congrats on becoming Dopey!

Really disappointed to hear about your experiences with the merch and the expo and getting the shoes - 3 hours in line?! Ugghhhh. I wish they'd let runners pre-order the shoes and pick them up in a separate location, similar to what they have done with the Dooney & Bourke bags. And surely they could stock more appropriate amounts of things, they KNOW how many people sign up. Or even have a decent variety of stuff online afterward - PEOPLE WILL BUY IT!

Thank you for the detailed list of the characters on the courses - I'm also a little disappointed to hear that the line-up sounds VERY similar to last years. I wish they'd vary it more from race to race too, especially with all of the "challenge" runners (14K of them!). The morning of the full last year it was like deja vu running to the MK because all of the on-course entertainment was exactly the same as the previous morning. Would have been nice to have some changes.

Thanks again for posting! :) Hope you're recovered and had a good weekend, congrats to your wife too on the 10K! Glad to hear she likes the tech shirt sizing.

That's just one with 2 holes cut out. Your best bet is to go to a place that does framing like Michaels, they can help you out with it I'm pretty sure.

Woot woot! Love reading everyone's comments and notes. I've put my race report up on my blog!

Check it out here: http://mouserunner.blogspot.com/

I completely agree on the merchandise. I was able to get one of the last Dopey challenge "I Did It" shirts, but everything else had been picked over by end of day Wednesday. :( I really wanted the track jacket or hat.

Also interesting, has anyone else seen this petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/run...e-merchandise-should-be-available-for-presale

I feel like an official petition is taking it a bit far, but I like the idea. Isn't this type of feedback better when given though the survey they send out?

Great report! I like the pre-sale. Somehow limit it to runners only. Logistics of that might be tough for Disney though. Then they can open it up during the expos.

Thanks!

Yeah it was interesting that the justification for the petition was that people were buying merchandise to resell. Is this really a huge issue (other than NB shoes)? Pre-sale for pick-up would be pretty awesome though.

You got Launch Pad! Jealous! Originally, on the approach Launch Pad was there taking pics but then they switched like 5 runners in front of me :( Not that I don't love Darkwing but I already have a pic with him from the marathon 2 years ago.

I don't think it should be that tough. It's a slightly larger scale, but not all that different from what they do for the pin events, vinylmation events, heck, even the anniversary events like DLR does for HM, Tiki Room, etc. And they even do it for runDisney events on a smaller scale for D&B bags, pins, race retreat, etc.

I definitely get the impression that this is a much bigger issue out at DLR based off of reports of the lines for the most recent DLR 1/2 and Tink 1/2. I'd imagine that it exists at WDW with some respect for the pins, and the occasional other really limited stuff, but most of it (I think) comes down to runDisney not wanting to be left with a ton of merch at the end that didn't sell. Especially since I heard reports that whatever was left was on sale 50% off at Team Mickey on Weds. Can anyone confirm this? But I have seen some of the old stuff at the outlets in years past, so not unfathomable. It's really hard to prove that by under-ordering you left X dollars on the table, but heaven forbid you are the manager who approved an extra 500 "I Did It" 5k shirts that didn't sell.

Great report thank you for taking the time to post about each race. Your Frozen costume for the half was awesome! Also kudos for your really strong finishing times finishing the marathon in 4:19 is quite the accomplishment after all the early mornings and miles already under your belt. Did you ever share your training plan anywhere online?

Omg your Tetra outfit! Adorable!! As are your other outfits! I'm such a sucker for cute race outfits, it's one of the reasons I got sucked into doing runDisney events! I got a little emotional reading your finishing of Dopey, you should be insanely proud!!

I think a lot of the merch issues would be solved by simply requiring showing your race bib to be able to buy things- Would be an extra step for those who run to the merch area before bib pickup but they could also open bib pickup 30+ min before to counter it.. Oh you have a Half bib- you can buy half or generic merch etc..

The thing that always gets me is the strangeness of the shirt/jacket sizes- of all things- they HAVE everyones tshirt sizes so use that as a pretty good estimate on what shirts to order to sell- If most people wear S or M dont over buy the 2XL or XS..

That's actually a really good point. Which would lead me to wonder why they don't do that. Or do they do it and the people who wear the XXL just never buy anything? Which I find hard to believe but saw plenty of XXL gear available when the other sizes were sold out.
