Maybe someone should tell Eisner on his next trip to WDW to grab his.... No really, He has a brick there too. It is gray and on the left side of the MK Castle logo. I found it a while back.

Hope they keep the MK logo in front though in some fashion.

Also this was done at the Disney Vero Beach Resort. Not sure if it was part of the same program or not. They look the same hexagon style though.

Roy E Disney had one as well, I believe on the right edge of the "gray area". I usually made it a point to see it whenever entering MK.

WDW didn't just wake up one day and say, "you know what - screw it - let's rip out the bricks." There is very likely a good reason... Either modifications to the infrastructure, liability hazards, expansion or a combo of all three. Maybe it just has to do with aesthetics, and that's okay too. They lived up to their commitment of 2011 (and then some). All good.

Easier to bulldoze the bricks and put in asphalt. Lower maintenance costs as well. Bravo, TDO! You've found yet another way to save a few bucks while removing some charm from the area!

the colored asphalt looks fine and to be fair they could fake brick it really well and avoid the tripping hazzard and keep yout charm.

They removed these at DLP, as well :(. The first ones were revealed during the 5th anniversary celebration in April 1997 and they added WDS ones later on. The first bricks all had 12/04/1997 on them and there were quite a few famous names among them.
They were removed a few years ago but I'm not sure when. I can't remember what the terms of the contract were but I sure was sad to see they were gone. I would've taken more pictures if I had known they were being removed. The WDS ones otoh were pretty much desintegrating on their own....

My shared bricks were registered to someone else's address so I have no idea if they even offered a souvenir option. At least it's something that they're offering this for WDW.

ETA: they were removed in early 2016 and sold with the promise of 10 years it seems. They were still selling them in 2004 so they were less generous in Paris than in WDW.

As far as logistic go.

They have a database that shows your brick location, based on your name.
They have records of who bought what.
There are plenty of company's that can handle bulk packing / shipping items out heck Disney has it's own shipping depot.
It wouldn't be hard with today's tech, to match old purchases with new addresses for those who moved.

Some labor hours, to pull the bricks, load it into a pallet, mark that pallet as what it contains, then let people come pick up there bricks at a off site location for the next year etc. Easily done really.

It's simply just cheaper to bring in the bulldozer and scoop em up and throw em in the bin.

How many would break if you tried to remove them?

How many people would take a fit and get free stuff to make up for it?

Some would break, yes and well hey that happens.
But for those that don't break, and for those who would like to come down, spend some money and pickup there brick.
It would be a pretty nice thing to do.

Not off topic.... this is a great time to make lemon-aid out of lemons....

Consider the Security Mess of the Contemporary walkway. Because of physical constraints, imposed by the "loop" of the MK Bus lot?
The walkway has it's very own Security - it dumps just BEHIND the Security/Bag Check area for the MK Bus lot. And people are getting this. And using the Contemporary as a drop off.

Worse - the "loop" is now so crowded with Security vehicles that it's becoming as nasty to navigate as the old Disney Springs Bus lot.

Perhaps now, with brick removal, this Security Mess can be re-engineered. The MK needs a better "close in" parking location for Security vehicles, and a Contemporary Walkway that dumps IN FRONT of the Security/Bag Check area for the MK Bus lot.

All personal opinion - I'm not necessarily right, no one else is necessarily wrong.

Hard? No, it's not the moon landing.
Automatic or free? Nope

That' $15/hr everyone thinks people deserve.. yeah, well that hurts little projects like this that you say "its brainless!!" - yeah well it doesn't happen on its own, so even in your little example you've probably included an hour or so of labor per transaction.. never mind the space, the equipment, the followup, the months of people being involved.

It's time and time is expensive.

We paid for a small wooden version on a stand for ours at DL and we love it. If and when our brick is removed we will have something to remember it by. I can't even find our brick and I know about where it is. We have actually only seen it once.

While I agree with the fact that they have run their course and they have been there more than 8 years past their date of agreed upon display so no one can really complain.....I have a hard time believing they lost money on these when they were first put in.

If that were the case these wouldn't be a go to fundraiser for Churches and other organizations. Yes the inscribed bricks cost more than regular walkways, but I doubt the difference in cost was more than what was being charged for them.
You’re seriously underestimating Disney’s ability to very inefficiently run a business. While they made money up front they lost money on maintenance, upkeep and a bunch of random unrelated things.

I was talking with the guy who maintained them once and he said ironically the thing that eventually put them in the negative was when they sent out letters to let everyone know that they could potentially be removed.

It's not just cheaper, it is much faster. Could you imagine the complaints if they spent a year with construction for a walkway??? My family has a brick there, but it is what it is. I would be more upset if they spent the time doing removing it rather than have it ready for our trip next year. Not to mention they are probably inlaid in concrete which means even if they do all that work, the bricks still may be cracked.
