Virgin Megastores, including Disney location, will shut down this summer

Especially since casino's are illegal in Florida except for on Indian reservations.

Well didn't Merriwether Pleasure acquire his land from the Eye-For Indians? (You know, the ones the highway is named after?) ;)

They could always return and reclaim the land and open their own casino... :animwink:

That's not why they are closing. The owners of Virgin Megastores are closing them because they think they can get more money in rent from other tenants. They are closing the one in Disney because they want to phase out all the stores...eve the ones where they don't own the building. The Virgin stores in New York were HUGELY successful. It's greed that's causing them to close...and in this economy I hope the owners go bankrupt.

I was going to say the same thing. This isnt a failure on Disney's part. Virgin is closing all of the stores and one just so happens to be at DTD.
Disney will find something to replace it... this is high profile real estate and due to the size, I dont imagine they woud leave such a huge building empty for too long.

I work a few blocks away from the Times Square Virgin MegaStore. A few months ago they decided they would not be renewing their lease for that space. They had originally moved in 1996, before Times Sq had been fully "Disneyfied," and thus got a very good rental price per sq ft for the huge space. With that lease now up, the landlords wanted to really cash in and asked for a far higher rent than Virgin was willing to pay.

Of course, maybe Virgin had already seen the writing on the wall and knew they'd be closing all their stores anyways.

Someone asked about close-out sales. The Time Sq location is now on the third week of its store closing sale. It started with everything in the store at 20% off, with some things up to 30%. Now they are up to 25% off, with some things up to 40% off. So basically all CDs and DVDs, including new releases, have been 20% off (now 25% off). BUT mind you, this is off the ORIGINAL LIST PRICE. So it's really not that great of a deal. Most new releases used to be discounted more than that. And a quick check on Amazon shows much better prices on the back catalogs of movies and music. Plus, Virgin used to have many bins of DVDs and CDs for $10. Well anything that used to be in those bins (say, the first Hellboy movie) got knocked back UP TO FULL PRICE, then discounted 20%. So buyer beware. Still, I'm stopping in every few days to see if the prices will continue to drop. I'm hoping that in their final few days I'll be able to get a few really good bargains.

On a side note, it still has not been revealed if any company has spoken for this soon-to-be-open, huge retail space in the heart of Times Square. There has been some speculation though (including on this board) about the possiblity of Disney moving in there. They are closing their 5th Ave World of Disney store, chosing not to resign their lease at that location. But when that was announced, Disney said they'd be looking for another location in New York City. Not only would this Times Square location be great for them given the number of Broadway musicals they have going on nearby, but the basement level of the space already has (currently unused) movie theaters that could be used for special screenings and events. Mind you, this is total SPECULATION, but we'll keep our eyes out for any annoucements.

Aaka, you have the story wrong here. Virgin owns the space in Times Square - part of the Bertlesmann building. The Virgin Megastore company is owned by a Real-Estate parent company, who purchased the Megastore for the sole purpose of leasing the property out, knowing they could get a far better price for it then what they were essentially paying based on the profits (or lack there of). And as an FYI - the space HAS been taken in Times Square. Forever 21 will be moving into the space where Virgin is currently in.

If you want to go to the store in DtD you have less then three months to go. According to Disney the last day the store will be open will be on May 31st.

If Disney asks Apple, or Apple asks Disney to get into that space, it can be be an interesting place to be, Just Imagine how good and crowded are the stores are at Millenia or Florida Mall.

Now they can actually have a flagship store (the big one like NY's) and maybe just maybe bring the other part of the Apple store (yes there use to be a different store and is located at Cupertino).

Just imagine what that can bring to Disney as other Merchandise, just imagine a custom iPod with Mickey on the back, or a Tishirt with the iPod ads with Donald.

Just imagine if you had the time on your vacation go there and learn how to edit the perfect video with your own fotage or how to do a book (that could be printed there) with your own pictures from your actual trip.

I know is double the size of the regular Apple stores. but sky is the limit.

As for ESPN Zone it can go to Mannequins / 8 Tracks area.

But then I am just in a Blue Sky mode right now.

Another idea it can be close Disney Quest, and make a Broadway style theater. (this came from another thread) and bring for short runs all the Disney shows Aida, Beauty and The Beast, Lion King, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, Little Mermaid and other shows like Cats or Miss Saigon.

I wonder if this one is closing too?

(In case you can't figure this out, that's the original Grauman's Chinese Theatre hiding behind the TVGuide building)

That'll leave a big hole between GCT and the Kodak Theatre.

Maybe someone will ship the hat that way

I know I know, but i can't resit,

Know I prefer the Hat over the TV Guide building to hide the Theater.

Now, wasn't that Virgin one of the 3 original ones closing first?
