VIDEO: Dopey Takes a Fall in "Fantasmic"

I don't care how Dopey you are -- no one should fall through the rail like that. If Goofy wasn't there to break Dopey's fall, he would have fallen into the water.

But really why is the boat so stripped down and lame looking anyway... They could add a nicer railing that would also prevent someone falling overboard...I am sure the initial thought was to make the railing thin sothat it would not hide the characters, but when you see Disneyland's version using the real riverboat it is so much more impressive... Our version looks sad in comparison...and we have a deicated stage and stadium...our version should actually be worlds better in that nothing has to be double duty.
Wow. The WDW boat is totally understated and serves more as a backdrop to the characters --whereas, the Disneyland boat is the star and really outshines all the characters.

It is truly amazing how something like this hasn't occurred sooner.

Ariel is even sitting with her fin through the rail. LOL. The Disney World boat looks safe enough, but not really when compared with the Disneyland boat.

The Disneyland boat has so many rails and safeguards in place, it's impossible for anyone to fall.

Just from a safety perspective, Disney World should just get rid of that boat and buy a huge boat just like the one at Disneyland.

Good to see Chip coming to Dopey's aid. Just curious, anyone know if there is some sort of protocol for characters coming to the aid of others in situations like this, especially if it would involve stepping out of character or de-costuming on stage? I could see a much different scenario if Dopey had gone in the water and Chip felt compelled to jump in after him. Just wondering if Disney has a "stay with the show and wait for a CM to help" policy.

in most cases they probably have a wait policy

but the boat may be different since there arent any normal cm's on the boat

Woah. Thank goodness nobody noticed this and stayed calm the whole time. It sort of reminded me of what happened once during a Doraemon stage show in Japan.
I started reading "decapitation" and started to fear the worst. I don't actually think these incidents are that similar except in the performance snafu aspect just because Dopey could have fallen into the water and under the boat and potentially died. Obviously in the Japanese stage, no one was at risk except the children in the audience's immersion.

I totally agree that in comparison to the DL Mark Twain that the DW Steamboat Willy is kind of sketchy when put side by side. Is wherever Fantasmic takes place in Disney World large enough to host a second riverboat tour during the day? It's a win win if you can get a ride out of that bigger boatin instead of just adding more safety railings.

I'm all for "the show must go on" mentality, but unless there's a life guard on the boat behind everyone or in a cabin, waiting for a CM from shore could take minutes. In a potentially lethal situation where someone might go under the boat, waiting for a CM to show up is not really a good solution instead of attempting a rescue, potentially stopping the show and resuming it again when everything's fine. I guarantee Disney would rather the show get an interuption than risk someone dying in front of thousands of people and having the headline "Fantasmic show at Disney World refuses to interupt show as costumed cast member drowns/is crushed" on a ton of newspapers. I wouldn't be surprised that if someone goes overboard for cast members to call out to the captain of the boat so they immediately stop it asap to try and prevent someone from getting crushed under it. I mean, they have a protocol for vomit called "code v" and cancel fireworks shows constantly because of wind. I'm sure they have the safest possible "take no chances" battle plan when a person goes overboard.

Are they just going to add another metal bar near that bottom area, or proper railings like the ones on the boat at DL? Our Fantasmic has needed upgrading for a while in many ways, any update, whether in safety or showmanship, is welcome.

The thing is the boat at Disneyland is actually the grand steamship Mark Twain. The same boat that not only opened Disneyland on July 17th, 1955, but the same boat where Walt and Lillian hosted a wedding anniversary party for friends and family two days before Disneyland opened on July 15th, 1955. And the same boat in the 21st century that Disneyland visitors can ride all day around the Rivers of America, if they don't want to ride the Sailing Ship Columbia. And when Fantasmic! debuted at Disneyland in 1992, the Mark Twain subbed in nicely as the boat from Steamboat Willie, the cartoon short considered the formal debut of Mickey Mouse in 1928.

Although to be fair to WDW's version of Fantasmic! that opened in 1998, their smaller and much simpler version of the riverboat...

Looks more like the 1928 cartoon version of the very humble riverboat from Steamboat Willie...

I would have to think that a very, very small minority of the Fantasmic! audience each night at DHS gets the connection to the 1928 cartoon however. Nor would most of the audience at Disneyland get that; they just think it's the Mark Twain with all the Characters on it for the Grand Finale'.

Well that was done intentionally, it was stated that they weren't trying to replicate the Mark Twain, they were making Steamboat Willie. The Mark Twain was also intended to hold way over the 20-25 people the cast is made up of. This is more of a show piece, rather then an actual means of transportation. It should definitely have the same safe guards for cast safety as the Mark Twain has for guests.

Pretty sure that the protocol for a character going into the water is that Ariel goes in to help first. Makes sense.

Poor Dopey... quite the unlucky character. In 2001 I remember him catching on fire in the Main Street Electrical parade and having to abandon his float and run offstage!

Curious. Is the boat back and cast back on all the decks again. In September trip the boat was not part of Fantasmic. I saw it was brought back, then gone. Is all well again?

Literally just saw it 4 hours ago; yes, it's back. I'll go and check my photos to see if the railings are different when I do my trip report

Thanks so much. Appreciated. We were disappointed when gone in September again but glad it is back for next trip.
