But really why is the boat so stripped down and lame looking anyway... They could add a nicer railing that would also prevent someone falling overboard...I am sure the initial thought was to make the railing thin sothat it would not hide the characters, but when you see Disneyland's version using the real riverboat it is so much more impressive... Our version looks sad in comparison...and we have a deicated stage and stadium...our version should actually be worlds better in that nothing has to be double duty.

I get so confused whenever I see a comment like this. It looks almost exactly like what it is supposed to be other than the paddle wheel being in the rear instead of on the side. Do people really not know what the boat is supposed to be?

Why are you confused? I didn't say I could not tell what it was supposed to be, that is obvious...I was saying that it could have and should have been a more beautiful set piece...if they were copying California's version of the show...which they were...had they reproduced the railings, there would have been no way to fall through...and it would have been a more beautiful set piece.

Except they weren't building a reproduction of the Mark Twain, they were building a reproduction of steamboat willie.

Once again, I am still confused after reading your response. Considering the boat is modeled after an animated cartoon, it's pretty close to a real life version of same.

I hear what you're saying. To be fair, and I'm just asking here, is it possible they just used one of the riverboats in the DL version as that is where the show takes place? Those would already be more detailed.

Are you asking if HS could use DL's Mark Twain? Because your post reads like there's more then one of the boat and I don't think thats the case

No. I'm asking if DL already uses a riverboat in their version. It's already there. Why not use it? Very different to suggest that a full riverboat be plopped into the DHS version. So, I completely understand a more simpler version at DHS.

Ohh, yes I understand. Disneyland uses the Mark Twain Riverboat that was already in use. I get what your saying, I don't really get why HS didn't just replicate DLs but :/

I don't see why it has to be a riverboat at all. Fantasmic at DisneySea uses a series of barges with lighting for the character floats and they work fine, look better than Florida's, but must have been much cheaper than building a whole boat.

I'm not so sure about that. The regulation purposely isn't entierly clear.
Absolutely sure. OSHA 1920.23 (c)(1)

1. Open floor below is greater than 4ft in distance.
2. Open floor below is where people may pass.

This should get an official OSHA visit as the video was on the Today Show this morning.

Wow, what a weird thread...debates over real (but really not) riverboats vs. not real (but cartoon) riverboats on one hand and stuff about toe/kick plates and OSHA regs, all in one magnificent thread. And they say that Disney is going in the crapper....I think NOT!!!!

You're applying the incorrect reg. number but that may be a typo. Again, the reg. you described is vague for this type of situation since I interpret it to say that a toe board is required if the platform is 4' AND people may pass below (among other non-applicable criteria). I am not entirely sure that is the case here. I'm not saying that the plate is not required but it is open to interpretation.
