Vegas is like Epcot

I just gotta ask... First time ever visiting Las Vegas. And I gotta say... I am enjoying the atmosphere of these mega resorts more than I am Epcot these days..

..some of these places are like Epcot in crack! Did the Epcot imagineers pack up and move to Vegas??? This place is amazing!!

The big pyramid, the Italy resort... Absolutely insane. I'd argue some of these resorts do a better job on theming than quite literally any modern day Disney architecture.

How do we have this monstrous sized buildings over in Vegas and Disney can't seem to get past go away blue boxes???

Don't kid yourself, Vegas is even more extractive than Disney could ever aspire to become. You don't hear people complaining about the readily available alcohol, conspicuous consumption of about every mind-altering substance, scantily clad everyone, gambling, etc.
Just got a block or two East or West of the strip after dark if you want a really thrilling experience. But this one is no longer a "company town"

It's another completely manufactured environment, but this one is in the middle of the desert where everything is imported

Amazing how the vacation world is outside the Disney bubble… not directed at you but this is also Disneys problem. I think people are starting to realize plenty of other places to go that are just as good and most times better

The big money (how did they get that???) was able to buy the best designers to craft an environment to best extract more cash. Prices are crazy if you partake but so many sights are free to explore if you want. Just like WDW tour the resorts and stay out of the money traps for a pretty good time. It is amazing what themed entertainment can be is there is plenty of cash to be spent and no "disney surcharge".

Vegas actually had many more elaborately themed experiences and shows in the 90s.

Many casinos have stripped down their theme to become regular hotels (Treasure Island being a perfect example). Sound familiar?

But even today EPCOT's Italy and France pavilions are greatly surpassed by their Vegas equivalents. Wish Paris still had its buffet.

You should have seen it in the 90s and early 2000s with all the actual themed entertainment too. And yes, many projects were done by former imagineers. Huge moving AND sinking sailing ships... elaborate dining theatre... the Star Trek Experience. All things that rivaled Disney and in many ways exceeded Disney in pockets.

The rise of the kind of work that was done in Vegas (and since, other locations) were prime reasons I always said Disney had lost it's lead. When Disney did things like the immersive hotels in the 70s, and EPCOT in the 80s... there was nothing like it. But in the 20 years after, people looked at what Disney did, took the concepts, did it themselves, and in many ways bigger, more elaborate and better.

"Others have caught up to Disney, and Disney is no longer so unique and out ahead of everyone" -- That's what concluded when I went back to WDW in the early 2000s after a long break. And it's also why so many people bash on Disney fans who think Disney can do no wrong, when they literally haven't gotten around to sample what others have been doing since Disney built it's reputation decades earlier. The water parks were the only area people hadn't really caught up to Disney's efforts at the time.

The big pyramid, the Italy resort... Absolutely insane. I'd argue some of these resorts do a better job on theming than quite literally any modern day Disney architecture.

Unfortunately most of those mega themed resorts are just a shell of what they used to be. Once Vegas dropped the idea of becoming a family vacation resort, and moved onto 'ultra lounges' and the like... the big over the top fantasy theming all basically got gutted and just left there for visuals. And that switch in trends was almost 20years ago.. so most of the remaining stuff is REALLY long in the tooth.

Luxor would have live characters based on eygption art... shows... Excalibur had shows with knights and horses.. Mirage had it's gardens and the S&R tigers... Ceasers would have Roman soldiers marching around and streetmosphere like characters. Treasure Island had a nighttime stunt show performance that could rival any theme park show and had far more impressive stage effects (Thanks Bob Gurr!)

Now you get ultra luxury like Wynn, etc. But you can still get great environments like what was built at Venentian, Bellagio, etc... because those were still easily adult focused.

I was in love with Vegas when I was younger and now I’m in love with Disney. I assume there’s probably a fair bit of crossover in the psychology of each target audience (with some distinct areas as well, if you Venn diagram-ed it out.)

My now husband and I used to go after the 2008 financial crash… I think maybe there was also some kind of scandal about companies spending too many funds in Vegas at that time so they pulled way back. We were willing to brave the dry heat of Vegas summers and go on weekdays and, all that combined, the discounts were insane. We did the Skylofts for a veritable pittance at one point, just amazing. I loved the theming, the elaborate pools, the labyrinth-esque shopping areas, spas, crazy-luxe hotel amenities, endless restaurant choices, shows, the “in another world” vibe, and so on.

As soon as littles were born into my family with my first nephew I started planning Disney trips and never looked back. But I do hope to get back to Vegas when my son is a bit older. Like I said, I imagine that outside of hardcore gamblers and party-ers, there’s a fair amount of crossover between Disney and Vegas fans.

Caesar’s Magical Empire was an amazing experience. Incredibly immersive and entertaining. The Star Trek Experience was probably the best ride/show I’ve ever been on. After the ride you exited to the promenade of Deep Space 9 with bars, restaurants, shops and characters walking around. Las Vegas of the 1990’s was great for theme park lovers.

alas both excalibur and circus circus both feel like they are the decades stale/old that they are...

Circus Circus has recently been partly refurbished thanks to newer ownership, but the rooms themselves? Still scarier than any clowns.

Excalibur isn't much better. The hand me down furniture used to dress up the Royal Tower rooms has not held up well over the last 10 years.

It's a shame because there are still a lot of families who go to Vegas and these two properties offer the most amenities for them, but they deserve nicer accommodations.

I think there’s a lot of truth in this, I spent so much time in Vegas in my 20s I ended up moving here, still one of the best decisions of my life, but now that I’m approaching 50 I am much more of a Disney person, and plan on moving to the Orlando area at some point to be closer to all the theme parks.

Both have a large dose of escapism and fantasy involved that I think are very appealing to break up the monotony of our everyday 9-5 lives.

I would like to clarify: I'm on vacation with my wife and dad. We don't gamble. We don't drink.

We explore and we watch shows. Going to Omega Mart this week... Alternative vacation options outside of Disney are definitely a must for me now after doing this. I grew up conditioned to only go to Orlando. Boy did that change!! Lol

I was going to say the same thing. Comparing Vegas to Epcot though is just kinda weird. The two are aiming for different goals. If you go in the Luxor you aren't going to have anything Egyptian in there, same with the Paris hotel, which oddly features English chef Gordon Ramsey?? Vegas has superior food, but as a family spot, it can leave something to be desired. There are still hookers all over, lots bros drunk and rude, and I haven't even discussed heading to downtown where the zombies roam.
To the OP check out the VR in the canal shops, and head over to MeowWolf off the strip for something very cool to see and do.
