Utilidors only in MK?

Any reason why the utilidors weren't created for Epcot, DHS or AK? It seems like it was a great idea, so why was this only done for the MK?

Because MK was the only WDW park Walt had a personal part of planning and Roy was around to make sure was planned right.

(DAK is actually a magnificently planned park, but that's a major part of the reason, not entirely tongue-in-cheek.)

I think there is a tunnel under EPCOT. It is very costly to do and is not needed at all parks.
you are correct

The problem was, building a Utilidor was an expensive idea. Therefore, when Epcot was built, the Utilidor concept was very limited to supporting functions in the Communicore area of the park. Yes, there is a smaller Utilidor system is built under the central section of Epcot's Future World, primarily beneath "Spaceship Earth" and "Innoventions and it's not well utilized

Isn't it close to UoE and M:S, too?

It's not really needed in EC...It's shape allow it to have many backstage roads.

it literally follows the shape of Communicore and there is a driveway entrance on the park entrance side of UoE

Nothing near M:S

Any specific reason they didn't make a cut-across from Adventureland to Tomorrowland? The map looks like it just rings the outside but that seems like it would take awhile to walk the long way around as opposed to going down through the middle under the Hub.

Honestly? I don't know, but for the most part people don't have a need to go from Adventureland to Tomorrowland. Mostly if you're on one side of the park for work, you'll be there all day.

Like many have said there is a tunnel in Epcot. But the main reason for the Utilidors in MK was Walts dislike of seeing cast members in different themed costumes in each Land in DL. Epcot AK and DHS do not have as many "themed" lands and were also designed to with more backstage areas thereby not needing as much underground passages.

Speaking of which, I was in DHS the other day outside of AIE and there was a ToT CM standing there. It was odd.

I think this is one park where that does not apply.
as the park is based on a movie studio. where you would expect to see cowboys next to aliens and such.
so you could get away with it here

I think one reason for the Magic Kingdom having the Utilidors was out of necessity... As the Magic Kingdom itself is on the second floor and the Utilidors are the first floor

When I was on the Backstage Magic tour someone did ask about why the utilidors were not used in any of the other parks and the answer was something to the effect of "they found other, more economical, ways of providing these functions in other parks."

If you look at the layout of Epcot, you can see that an extensive tunnel system really isn't necessary. Most of the attractions at Epcot are around the perimeter of the park. Since there is a service road going all the way around park this can provide most of the services that the utilidors do in MK, deliveries, cast member access, trash removal, etc. As other have mentioned there are corridors under the central section of the park to service that area.

True. Epcot has a bus system that takes cast members from the Cast Services building to their work areas behind the buildings. The transportation makes a huge horse-shoe shape from behind UoE, around World Showcase and turns around behind The Seas. The only reason for the tunnel in Epcot was to bring supplies to Electric Umbrella, Mouse Gear, Art of Disney, Cocoa Cola and Fountain View without having to go through the park. In recent years the tunnel also houses dressing/break rooms for The Character Spot, other entertainment and also holds offices and utility areas under the pin station area.

...and it does smell worse than the one at MK. :hurl:
