Use of eCigs

My husband is a heavy smoker and sometimes after waiting a really long time in line for something he can be going bonkers by the time we leave the attraction. About 3 years ago he purchased one of those Blu eCigs to take with him on our trips. As I'm sure many of you know, these little things are pretty neat in that nothing comes out of them until you inhale from them (suck on the end) and what you exhale is just vapor. There's no smoke and nothing "bad" about what is exhaled. It's a perfect solution for those moments in line. He can pull it out, take a few hits from it and be good to go.

Here in NC it's against the law to smoke in public buildings/locations (i.e. stadiums) but most businesses have started putting up these little signs in their windows next to the "No Smoking" signs that say "eCigs Ok." We asked a lot of folks locally, including some law enforcement folks, and they said ultimately the laws are written to say no smoking and that it is very specifically "no lighting something on fire that produces smoke" kind of thing. In otherwords, unless a business specifically has a policy to not allow it for whatever reason, there's nothing legally saying you can't.

Anyway... it's never been an issue when we've been in lines or anything and it certainly helps get through those long waits (or long walks between smoking areas). We actually had a CM ask him about it on this last trip curious how they work (he was obviously a smoker who has to deal with cravings while on "duty" at the attraction). I'm curious though, given that it seems most states kind of say the same thing about them and it's really up to a business to say whether or not they are allowed, has Disney made any move to specifically say one way or another?

Please search the forum, this has been covered and then some.
Sorry I must've missed that! I just did a new search, I think I was being to specific. I found a thread on it. Sounds like no official policy yet other than hearsay from some CMs. As I said, we had a few CMs watching my husband using his and ask about it, never telling him not to. I'd love an official answer from Disney on this one. I think I shall ask!

@wdwmagic or @The Mom feel free to close my thread. Sorry for missing the old one!

I thought I read somewhere officially Ecigs are to be used in designated smoking areas, but Iam not sure, hope that helps.

And congrats to your husband for using ANY Ecig. I have smoked burning vegetable matter for 40 years. Moving to an Ecig may not be perfect - but I'm no longer inhaling soot. This invention may very well save my life one day.
Good for you! I'm a nonsmoker, but I would never begrudge anyone a smokeless fix in public. It's interesting to me how quickly we've gone from a "smoking or non" society in my childhood to a "no smoking in public" society just within the last decade. It's better for public health, but I do feel for those who got hooked when the product was still socially acceptable. It's good that we seem to have a "third way" in these smokeless devices.

Thanks for the feedback folks. I have to agree that the concept of people not knowing enough about it could be enough to make them "fearful" about it being used outside of designated areas and thus to just sort of prevent any issues, it's best not to. Not an uncommon theme in human culture that we fear that which we do not understand. And please know I'm using the term "fear" here very loosely. I understand no one is afraid of it. LOL!

I think he was planning to skip taking the Blu with him this time anyway just because in general when we're there now he's doing much better at putting off that next smoke. Still, I may try to see if I can find the "official" answer. I looked through that thread (which I had mentioned above I had found with a different search too) and all I saw was things like someone asking a CM or Guest Relations. Something "in print" would be awesome... especially considering the announcements on the monorail and the maps still just say "no smoking." I get that right now it's sort of being plopped into the same bucket but for those who are very literal, they could probably "push the issue" if they really wanted to (not that we would but there are some folks out there... LOL)!

Again thanks folks!

IMHO e cigs should be able to be smoked anywhere in the park ( except in buildings or on rides). As far as we all know for now anyway they are safe for non smokers. But, the reality of it is, it is still harmful to smokers, and we never know what they will find out about them later.:in pain: My DH is a smoker, and has yet to try e cigs. We always use the smoking sections ( stinky). We'll see...

E-Cigs are just plain annoying most of the time. It might be better if it A) did not have the vapor coming out of the end, and B) did not light up. I cannot stand to be on a dark ride and have a flash go off and even though the e-cig is a lower intensity light, it is still annoying. And try siting in a theater with some **** sitting next to you puffing on one. That vapor may be harmless (that is still debatable) but it is still annoying to have float in your face while watching a show.

Don't take my comments as purely anti-e-cig. I am in favor of these things, just not in a tightly packed line, or an attraction where you're stuffed together. I see people walking down the street with these things all the time and it doesn't bother me in the least. And at that distance, who cares if it does bother me? Like I said, if it was clear vapor, and no light then it would be perfect indoors in close quarters. Indoors at a table or somewhere the vapor will not float into my face then great.

Oh, and has anyone seen the little idiot kids puffing on these things in the theaters yet? Went to the movies a few days ago and watched three little "adults" lounging back turned slightly so everyone around them could see them smoking an e-cig. As if everyone in the theater was looking at these children and thinking "Oh my God. They are so grown up. I so admire them!"

Officially, ecigs are only permitted in designated areas, but it's not actively trained or instructed. I found the policy just by random chance of searching. I think a lot of cast members aren't aware or are nervous about approaching those with ecigs.

Um well, I'd rather my kid experiment with an e-cig than the real thing. Let's face it, most kids experiment and if they had e-cigs around for much longer I wonder how many people today would NOT be smokers.
