Unofficial Guide

I have bought a few books about Disney on my kindle but I think I am going to break down and buy an actual guidebook to read and take with me on our trip. I am debating between the Unofficial Guide and the Unofficial Guide with Kids. Does anyone recommend either or have another guide that you like better? I'm also thinking about getting the Disney Food Blog ebook. Have any of you ordered it?
I've learned so much online that I haven't bothered but the book lover in me just wants a book about Disney in my hands I think!!!! :) Thanks!

The only issue I'd have with bringing an Unofficial Guide on vacation is the fact that it's HUGE. It's not easy to bring around the parks or even pack, haha They do have the color companion, which is smaller and full of beautiful photos. Or you can get the UG on your Kindle and carry that around, though I totally get the "real book" thing.

Maybe consider why you'd want it on your trip? It's fun to read on the plane and to see what you might have missed. Much (all?) of the UG is available on touringplans.com; at least if you have a subscription (it's pretty cheap). Restaurant reviews and menus, ride recommendations and reviews, and all that other good stuff. We brought our full UG the first trip after we got the book. But for our last couple, i just relied on the Touring Plans Lines app and my personalized touring plans. That all said, I love having the actual book, too!

I would get both b/c the regular Unofficial Guide 2014 is the main book with any info you would ever need almost 400 pages, and the one for with Kids is alot smaller and is basically an add on to the info in the main book. :)

I have an issue with the Unofficial Guide b/c a) its so big and not easy to carry around with you at the parks and b) when I read it, I thought it had a negative tone to it that I didn't care for. I have found that when it comes to bringing a book, I brought it the first couple years and never opened it while in the parks. I always bring my computer with me to WDW so anything i need to look up I do it in the room. And the way I plan, I put notes on a spreadsheet and convert it to a note card for the park. Even the most experienced Disney traveler doesn't remember everything and you will always find a reason why you need to come back. :)

The negative tone is more of a "not sugar coating " everything like Birnbaums tends to do.

That's exactly why I appreciate the Unofficial Guide as it tells it like it really is.

I get that. I appreciate it not being all bubbly and happy and everything is wonderful. Because you do need to know all the parts of Disney - the good, the bad, the ugly. I just think it can be realistic with out being so negative.

You also have to take a lot their not-so-nice stuff as tongue-in-cheek.

I personally don't find it negative as I have more then one sarcastic bone in my body! :D

I think the regular UG is the better of the two...and it includes a huge section of "with kids" stuff.

If you want to take their touring plans to the parks, there are single pages in the back of the book (with the plans on them) that you can rip out and take along. I would clip the plans out and not attempt to carry that (or any) book around the parks.

:)

We get the UG every year. I have combed thru it so many times prior to the trip, and I know the park well enough now, it doesn't go in the park. My wife usually reads it on the plane so it is at the resort, but doesn't make it out of the room. I enjoy the insight it provides.
