Universal Puts Disney's Reopening on Defensive

At this point, I would be shocked if DL opened by July 17 unless there are magical mice suddenly scurrying around the parks, shops, and resorts. While much smaller, they still have similar issues as WDW - particularly with hotels and DVC. It would be great if it happened, though.
Disneyland has three hotels that collectively have less rooms than some individual WDW resorts. DVC is virtually non existent there. The comparison of scale is not even remotely close. The focus in California will be on the parks anyway.

I think the same legal issues exist. If they can open a park, why can't they open the timeshare? Every day it's closed materially hurts owners. If the CA Governor's EOs permit timeshares to operate, then Disney is already on shaky ground if GCV want to make an issue of it.

We've already seen how Disney wasn't too keen on opening Jambo despite its DVC until either booking pressure or owner pressure got them to change their minds. The challenge with DVC seems to be that once *anything opens* it has to open, which means gearing up for more than the parks.

I never said they wouldn’t open DVC accommodations in California. I said that hotels wouldn’t be the priority because the parks there will be far more of a planning challenge than resorts. DVC in California is only 50 rooms. That’s nothing and certainly not a challenge. Disneyland is nothing compared to the scale of the WDW resort or DVC operation.

Also that’s not an entirely accurate assessment of what took place with Jambo.

So what’s your understanding of Jambo then?

According to an email from Terri Schulz, she said the demand for AKL didn’t warrant opening both Kidani and Jambo, but when demand increased they would do so.
The email she was replying to was one of many sent to her or Member Satisfaction about the matter.

Coincidentally Jambo opens a day after she sent that email. Either demand vastly increased, or they decided to open to avoid further dissension or ???

It's ridiculous really. If there aren't enough people to fill it, then they just move people from other resorts, which can remain closed.

"Good day, Port Orleans guest. You've been upgraded to Animal Kingdom Lodge at no additional cost. We apologize for any inconvenience, but we hope you enjoy your new deluxe accommodations. Oh, by the way, did you know with Disney Vacation Club you can enjoy a lifetime of stays at resorts just like this..."

There are plenty of hotel rooms at AKL that they can move people to. The DVC rooms don’t need to be touched. My git feeling was that they may offer AKL to some of the CSR tower guests displaced by the NBA. It’s in the same general area and would be an upgrade in designation but the tower rooms are really an upgraded moderate so not as big of an upgrade. My guess is they considered keeping half the resort closed (Hotel side) and then they would move the DVC people booked at Jambo to the other side. Most people wouldn’t complain, it’s the same overall resort. Where the problem comes is if there’s too much demand for AK from DVC owners. Moving people to a different DVC resort would be more problematic. DVC makes everything so much more challenging logistically in this situation.

That’s exactly what they did do, move people over to Kidani.

But the debate over AKL ownership was gathering pace, and people were complaining about being moved to Kidani. As I said, some people do prefer one over the other.

Whatever the reasons, they’ve clearly decided the better course of action is to just open it up.

I think some people take the Welcome Home schtick a little too literally ;) Some people like to complain just to complain. Although having the hotel open as well means likely more dining options and 2 pools so a win for anyone staying there.

I hope your gut is wrong. I do not like AKL.

I believe the plan was to open everything at once...then they read this post earlier today and changed plans on the fly:
;););)
They could just open the parks or just DL park first and then go from there. The resorts could stay closed initially. I still think they may need a reservation system for the parks though.

Well, what do ya know! I missed the WDW re-opening but a couple weeks, but guessed right the DL opening!

I originally said DL at least by August and probably even in July.....so I'll claim consolation prize! ;)
