News Tron coaster coming to the Magic Kingdom

There is a disconnect concerning what huge Disney enthusiasts believe makes an amazing RIDE and what the general public is clamoring for in 2017. Is the ride system and tech on display with Shanghai pirates amazing, yes. Does that tech mean what is essentially a boat ride will automatically garner more praise than a thrilling coaster, no.

You overlook why those non-coaster rides are so popular to start with - WIDE APPEAL

Coasters give a rush, but coasters are very polarizing in who can experience them, or want to. A ride like POTC is approachable by those 0-99yrs old. It's the kind of experience that offers good repeat value because of the details and scale. They are attractions that can be not just experienced by, but shared together by a whole family. That's why the format is popular and not parks don't just focus on 'the rush'.

So, neon lights make it Tron. Oh-kay.

LOL! Tron to anyone that hasn't seen the movie or anyone that isn't looking into a specific storyline but instead compare/contrast key thematic elements of design based on it's visual identity should view Tron as a Digital Landscape supported with Glow Things revved up to 10 with accompanying DaftPunk Music. A Futuristic Rave set in a Digital World. That is Tron's identity. https://www.google.com/search?q=Tron+look&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ

The new coaster fits that "to a T" whereas Test Track is only Tron-like. Same visuals but in different context. Both sharing similar thematic elements. Storyline not among them. But as you can see (hopefully) from the video I've provided below; It wouldn't have taken much for Imagineering to transform TestTrack into a Tron attraction. But that's just this guy's opinion. Here's a question for you. What would make Speedway Tron-themed?

My discussion on this subject is over. End of line.

So I'm surprised no one has brought this up but I'm wondering how Disney is reacting to the news about the just announced Harry Potter attraction replacing Dragon Challenge in 2019.

Rumors have it, it will be a SFX Coaster on Hagrid's/Sirus' Motorbike through the forbbiden forest. If the rumors are true it may include several launches, forwards and backwards, freefall drops and other such maneuvers.

I can't imagine Disney is happy about another Bike coaster coming to orlando AND opening before Tron?
Isn't GotG rumored for the SFX coaster too

I doubt it's SFX. The theme doesn't really fit that ride system. I'm guessing it'll be a motobike coaster though.

Overall, meh. I'm Harry Potter'd out.
I was never a fan of potter and couldn't tell you one thing from the movies or books they they slipped into the lands. Having said that, those attraction are spectacular and to not be excited by the thought of another universal e ticket, makes me wonder if you're even a theme park fan.

Why does everyone have to compare a coaster to an existing one in the Disney World parks?

Launch doesn't mean similar.
Indoor doesn't mean similar.
Steel doesn't mean similar.
Wooden doesn't mean similar.
Inversions? Nope, still doesn't mean similar.

Disney is the only subject I have seen where people are dying to compare 2 rides in one park, trying to find the similarities in them.

Don't get me wrong, not only am I a massive fan of the franchise (I've read all the books front to back 9 times), but I also love Forbidden Journey. Gringotts was also very impressive. And the lands are stunning. That said, I wish Universal would give Harry a rest. Also, I don't understand why they're going with another coaster. The two year timeline also has me concerned that this project is nothing more than a cheap buck.

I have a lot of hope for Nintendo though (even if I can't stand the IP, no offense to Nintendo fans)!

They're probably going with another coaster because unfortunately they're removing the best coaster at that park. However, I'm looking forward to what's to come!

I never said the rides aren't popular. I'm saying by posts on enthusiast boards you would assume E ticket dark rides are what everyone wants and are by far the most popular attractions in the parks. I mean take a look at this board, every announcement of a ride that isn't an E ticket dark ride is met with a groan. Yet when you read surveys, talk to guests, look at ticket sales it's coasters and simulators that are winning those battles. So if Disney is reading the landscape in 2017 and they want to stay ahead of the game and drum up an overload of excitement the ride needs to be more than riding on a boat. The boat rides are now your people eaters, the thrill and screen rides are your ticket sellers.

It doesn't matter what they announce. Trufans, the internet smart marks, hate anything that is coming. It doesn't matter how advanced it is, it's not "right" for the park. They have a direct ouija board to Walt, and know his thoughts on the matter. Course, they also complain about how old and stale everything is, and how it desperately needs to be fixed or replaced.

IOW: the like to sit on the internet and complain. And this is no different than some sports fans, some movie fans, etc etc.

Just to correct some statements here about TRON being a box office bomb, TRON cost 17 Mio and made 33 Mio. in the USA alone, not including international market. Yes Disney was disappointed but it is far from being a bomb.

And, since then, the film has developed a LARGE cult following, with comics, video games, and of course, one of the stages in Kingdom Hearts 2. Or, to put it in perspective, Alice In Wonderland wasn't a huge hit when that was first released in 1951, either.

In a Disney community? You don't say....

Yet when you read surveys, talk to guests, look at ticket sales it's coasters and simulators that are winning those battles.

Oh really? I look forward to your citations for these claims

UO rushing to open a bike coaster before WDW would be... like WDW rushing to open a studio park before UO? But on a much smaller scale?

I don't think Disney should be worried. Nobody will be calling Disney a copycat or anything when the Tron coaster opens, and if they are, they best do more research! I'm glad to see Universal announce this because it means they might not die under the wrath of Star Wars Land. Basically, healthly competition is good. Orlando would be a lot different if Disney was still in its own category.

Did you see how Hollywood is spooked because Spidey Homecoming dropped 73% between Friday's #1 and #2? It's a good movie, but audiences are showing signs of superhero fatigue.
Seriously? Currently, 4 out of the top 5 movies of the year domestically (and the top three of the summer) are Super-hero flicks.

People have been saying that fatigue is going to set in for years and years now... my question is when is it going to happen because it doesn't seem like anytime soon.

On top of that there isn't any new super movie coming out that is getting advanced jitters. There's palpable excitement for even the DCEU movies coming out next (thank-you, Wonder Woman). And, of course, Thor, Black Panther, Infinity, Ant-Man and the rest are hugely eagerly anticipated.

I worry, though, for the supers-on-TV. As big a fan as I am, some are starting to wear on me.

Anyway... TRON. Maybe the attraction will unthaw the freeze on Tron 3: http://www.nme.com/news/film/tron-l...te-on-tron-3-and-explains-its-premise-1999305
