So they went to Piza on Tuesday instead of Thursday, and they went to the Beach on Wednesday. She didn't send me any pictures of the beach, so I'm hoping she'll have a few when she gets home tomorow. But, her "twin" took a picture on the bus coming home. The beach wore them OUT! Their train to come back got canceled, and the next one didn't come for an hour, so they took a bus instead. Her twin was sitting between her and Aquin, both of whom fell sound asleep. But look at that scenery in the back window!!!
When they got home, she helped make dinner. Not sure exactly what it is, but she said it involved mushrooms, garlic, and bread, so I approve. She said she'll make it when she gets home.
Then yesterday the did an activity at the school and she got to fly a drone. I hope there will be pictures later. Then they were walking back somewhere and crossed a street and I know none of you have MET us, but we are clumsy. She stepped wrong when she tried to get back on the sidewalk and fell on her knees. Then when she tried to get up, she didn't have her balance and she fell face-first and ate some sidewalk. She's ok, but has some scrapes.
Then they went to Lucca. There were no scheduled activities. They just got to go walk around as long as they weren't alone. So she went with her friends and walked along the wall. She said there wasn't much to do, but it doesn't look like they actually LOOKED for things to do. Joel, Rowie, Bjarne, and E.
You can't see the scrapes in that one, so it's not TOO bad. The wall:
They got some ice cream. She said it wasn't the BEST stuff, but it was good. Chocolate and cream with nutella.
On the train ride back? She sent me this because there was a rainbow, but I couldn't see the rainbow at first and thought she was sending me a picture of the mcDonalds. She had said they were having carbonara, roasted potatoes, and some kind of meat for dinner, so I was confused because I was pretty sure that wasn't McDonalds fare. But she was just showing me the rainbow.
Carbonara
meat and "Happy potatoes. VERY happy potatoes" according to her.
Apparently on the train ride back, all the Dutch kids were singing this really annoying but funny song about a guy visiting his girlfriend by train and everything keeps going wrong. He gets up really early to catch the first train, but it's delayed and now he'll have less time with her. Then he finally gets on the train and gets there and doesn't see her. He thinks she didn't come. But then he sees her and everything is great and he runs to her. The train leaves and he spends the night with her and well, there are some inuendos about the rhythm of the train. She sent me a video but I can't post videos here, but they were all singing along with the song.
Today was a sport day....she is like her parents. Not very athletic. I love her facial expression.
She said the Gym was the ONLY nice looking thing about their whole school. She said it looked like a prison otherwise and the bathrooms were nasty and they didn't even have one on every floor. I told her they are going to be shocked when they come here and see her school, which to be fair is nicer than most high schools I've seen in the Netherlands. A's school is in a really old building with no AC, there's no Gym, and we thought it was probably a historical building, but I guess it must not be because the City is trying to find another building for them so they can raze this one to build houses. But anyway, most of the schools here look really run down compared to the ones in Wyoming. Maybe that's not indicative of most schools in the US, because I know my high school wasn't built until the 1980s so it was newer, but I don't remember ever seeing a school that was run down there. Here, there's no custodial staff at a school. They hire a service to come empty trash and sweep once a day, but that's it. I remember when I was in school, we had a fulltime custodial staff that was there while we were in classes. If someone spilled in the cafeteria, the custodians would be called to clean it. And they had to vacuum/mop every classroom at the end of the day and there was an evening crew that cleaned stuff every day after the students left. Our school was always really well-kept. I'm curious to know if that is just a Wyoming thing or if you all had similar experiences with your schools, kids' schools, etc. In the summer, they always completely deep cleaned everything....steam clean the carpets, strip, mop, and wax the floors, scrub every desk and chair, scrape gum off everything, clean cabinets and shelves, etc. They don't do that here, and I don't think the schools ever get deep-cleaned. I don't know that E's school has ever been mopped, where it would have been done every day in my school. Is that normal?
Today is Mushroom Risotto for lunch, but she is still helping to make it, so no picture yet.
