Everyone has an off day, I suppose. Though overconfidence would be my next guess.mangum publicly compares dhs tsl to dca carsland: deception? ignorance? over-confidence? other?

Great review! And I’m so pleased for your good fortune yesterday. From all accounts, today is NOT the day to be there. We got to experience Toy Story Land last night in an amazing way. My wife and I arrived at DHS at 4:30pm to see if there was any chance for a soft opening. We walked to the entrance, but it was still blocked and cast members were telling guests that there would definitely be no soft opening and the land wouldn't open until Saturday. We walked over to Toy Story Mania and saw that the wait wasn't long, so we got in line. It ended up being just a 15 minute wait. When our ride vehicle came to the end our little door opened and a CM said "Have fun in Toy Story Land". I thought "What did she just say? That can't be right," and figured that she must have made a mistake as we were told the land wouldn't open, or in any case she must be talking about tomorrow, assuming that most people would be back the next day. We were on the new 3rd track and I am less familiar with the exit. I know you walk through a long hallway to get back to Pixar Place, but something seemed different this time. It took a few seconds until I realized what was happening. Other guests exiting around us started to realize what was happening too and exclaimed in excitement. All of a sudden we were outside with lots of foliage and a manager-type CM said "Welcome to Andy's backyard". People around us started cheering. I couldn't believe it. We continued walking by the new toys and green army men along the new exit path and all of a sudden we were in Toy Story Land!
At the end of the Toy Story Mania exit was a large group of cast members with big smiles welcoming us to Andy's backyard. This was so cool. We must have been in a fairly small group of a few hundred people who entered Toy Story Mania through the old entrance and came out the new. Shortly after we got out they opened the new Toy Story Mania entrance. A cast member later told us that they didn't know the land was going to open today and it was a big surprise to them as well.
We walked to Slinky Dog Dash and the listed wait time was already 65 minutes. We got in line and ended up waiting about 30 minutes. The theming of the waiting area is amazing. There are so many details to look at. Quite a lot of the waiting area for Slinky Dog is covered. We had fun looking at the large packaging and instructions for the ride and other toys and games that make up the building. The ride itself is a lot of fun and I love it. My favorite part is the second launch where the train stops and backs up a little. The effects are neat and especially nice to look at at night. Slinky Dog is so cute, with the little wheels under his paws, and the theming is great. Later in the evening we came back to watch the ride for a while and the lighting is so cool. They have multicolored LED lights along the entire track that can make many different patterns. Sometimes the entire track is purple or green and the lights change color as Slinky goes by. Sometimes a white light bounces around all over the track or all lights are twinkling. There are quite a few different patterns that it cycles through.

After Slinky we walked to Alien Swirling Saucers, which had a listed wait time of 85 minutes. This line moved much slower than the previous and it ended up being about an 80 minute wait. I think they may have had a problem or were not operating both sides for a while as we were stopped for a long time. It's a fun and great looking ride, but I wouldn't wait this long again for this and will use FastPass next time. We visited Disneyland for the first time last year and loved Mater's Junkyard Jamboree. Mater's and Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters surprised us so much and ended up being among our favorite rides. Of course, we waited only 5 minutes for those rides and that is a big difference. I think that WDW needs a lot more of these cute small rides to take the weight off of the larger attractions and to provide more things to do for children. I like Mater's a little bit more because the music is so hilarious. I expected the music in Alien Swirling Saucers to be similar in silliness, but it is pretty simple. Still, it's a fun ride and it looks great, especially at night.
We did Toy Story Mania one more time from the new entrance and the new queue looks incredible. Everything is so colorful and there are a lot of fun little details to look at. There are so many oversized sticker sheets and cut-outs that are displayed in a clever way. For instance, in the picture below you can see a cut-out of Bullseye and in the background you can see that he was 'taken out' of the Toy Story sheet that still has Jessie in it. To the left is a sheet that makes the barn that appears in the game. There are so many of these things laying around, it is hilarious.

All in all we really liked Toy Story Land. Slinky Dog Dash is a great ride, Alien Swirling Saucers is fun, all the theming is great and the land is extra beautiful at night. Hats off to the imagineers.
By the time they get out of TSL it will be closing time or people are going to be so tired that they just head back to the hotel. They are there for the one land at this point. At my age, I could never use up that much of my remaining life just to ride a ride. Come to think of it, I wouldn't have done that when I was in my thirty's either.270 at 8:40am
What’s intriguing to me is that the rest of the park looks light - about where I’d expect for an 8am Gate on a Saturday in summer. It’ll be interesting to see if the other attractions soak off some of TSL and people use DHS as a full day park, or if people bail to other parks.
From all accounts, today is NOT the day to be there.
Random question, if you have an FP for one of the attractions in TSL, do you still have to wait in the queue to get in?

Edit: I was pretty disappointed with the tiny quick service restaurant. They have some nice options, but having it be just 2 windows is ridiculous. The line was so long all night we ended up going to ABC. But what the land really needs is a store! The Slinky Dog toys were flying off the shelves from the tiny cart. I don't understand why they didn't build a nice air conditioned Al's Toy Barn to sell all their Toy Story stuff. Seems like a no-brainer to me.
And the Pixar arch/sign is gone.We knew it was coming. Pixar Place is no longer named on the park map.

Interestingly, it's still labeled on the App MapWe knew it was coming. Pixar Place is no longer named on the park map.
it is a 90 minute wait just to get into Toy Story Land, then each attraction has a wait. The long queue depicted is standby for Slinky Dog. It would be just like for FOP in Pandora. You can walk up to the FP entrance. In the case of FOP when I was there the standby line went up the walkway to Africa and did a U-turn back into Pandora. It was that long.
Is Mr. Potato Head anywhere in the TSMM queue? Inquiring minds want to know.
