Toy Story Land expansion announced for Disney's Hollywood Studios

Does anyone know if there will be any official "Grand Opening" ceremonies at DHS on 6/30? My wife and I will be staying at the YC at the time and think it would be neat to see.

Why is the time between dispatches expected to be 45-60 seconds when it's my understanding that attractions like Splash Mountain take 16 seconds and Space Mountain (in Disneyland) takes only 12? Maybe those times are only for load/unload and not the actual dispatch interval?

Greater number of (and shorter) blocks allows for more frequent dispatches. If a train is truly dispatching every twelve seconds, it means that there can't be more than 12 seconds of travel time on the ride that you aren't clearing a block segment (either a lift hill or a brake segment). Generally, coasters with shorter trains have more block segments to increase the overall number of trains that can be on the track (and subsequently increase the capacity of the attraction), while coasters with longer trains can get away with fewer block segments.

For Slinky Dog, I'm assuming that there is a block brake before the first launch. Train 1 will depart and launch. Train 2 will not be able to leave the station until Train 1 clears the top of the first hill after the launch. Train 1 will continue to the second launch. I'm assuming there are not stacked block segments here, so regardless of if the train fully stops on the brake of not, Train 2 will not be able to launch in the first launch until Train 1 clears the hill after the second launch. In theory, the final block is set such that Train 1 will clear the final brakes before Train 2 gets to the second launch. There is an inherent time between when Train 1 clears the hill after the first launch and when Train 1 clears the hill after the second launch and it's this interval that will likely dictate the frequency of how many trains the coaster can handle at maximum capacity.

Adding an additional block would have severely interrupted the "flow" of an already short ride. The BEST option would simply to have had longer trains. Adding just 6 additional seats per train (an extra car + making the back car 4 seats instead of 2), would have increased hourly capacity by 33%.

Any ceremony is likely to be press/invite only, and will likely be a few days before.

On the 30th itself during guest hours, I wouldn't expect anything. It will be a case of all hands on deck to deal with the crowds. They wont want festivities taking place during all of that.

Yep. Media days are June 28th and 29th so the ceremony would likely take place one of those days.

If anything they might livestream their grand opening on the Disney parks live Channel. They seem to do that quite a bit lately...

I watched the behind the scenes video and I am proud for each and every individual working on this project. My problem is with TDO. This should have and needed to be much much more. Just my opinion. DHS was a ghost town last night. 10 minutes for RNRC and TOT of course that will be a thing of the past soon but we really need more. Hollywood Blvd at night is one of the best looking areas of WDW.

It's a shame they didn't include either the RC Racer and/or the Green Army Man drop ride just to bump up the capacity. I mean, maybe I'm just naive, but I wouldn't think adding either of those would have cost THAT much more but could have taken a bunch of pressure off of the capacity of the land in general...

I’m not judging the quality of the ride experience. I’ve said multiple times I think the rides will be fun and my sons will love them. I’m discussing the inefficient use of space, cost of construction, and insufficient hourly capacity. All based upon facts that I have access to and have shared. I’ve made no claims about how many butterflies will be released in my stomach on the quadruple-down or how many items at Woody’s Lunch Box I want to eat. I am with you. When it comes to theme parks, I only judge what I personally know. Bob Gurr may (or may not?) be able to ride in the front of the monorail, but even he hasn’t ridden Slink Dog.
Isn't that the point though? I wouldn't be shocked if this area were designed to be deliberately inefficient in terms of space utilization. It's a pressure-release valve for Star Wars.
