Rumor Tower of Terror to gain new theme?

Cancelled. It was eventually deemed to be a bad idea. Amazingly.
The biggest challenge (to me) would have been the effect on guest flow at the exit. I want to say the proposed location used some of the photo sales area, but IMHO the best option would be to remove the gift shop, make it the themed bar, and reopen the bypass for guests exiting the ride. But they’d never want to lose the retail.

Of course, you could have outdoor retail where the current coffee bar is. That could be integrated into the new bar. Or you could put the actual TOT retail items in the area where you currently buy photos. All the other garbage they sell could move elsewhere.

Of course, I’m just spitballing. In the end, all that matters is that our ride stayed.

The bypass is the gift shop. But thankfully someone older than 17 thought it was a bad idea.

I actually think a bar perhaps outside near the gardens or maybe behind or off to the side of the tower (not sure it was logitistically possible, but just saying as an idea) would have been a nice addition. I am thinking along the lines of a Carthay Circle Lounge-type bar at DCA with similar decor, but foreboding and eerie in tone obviously. I think it may have been a hit if executed properly. They could have had a couple of special drinks on the menu related to the Twilight Zone or the ride itself, too. The Drop-In Martini or a Dark and Stormy Night or a Serling Daiquiri.

Didn't one of the original early concepts for the ToT have it as an actual hotel where guests would also be able to stay in?

I seem to remember that many years back, the chained door to the right of the gift shop was open as an exit. I was 11 at the time, though, so I may be imagining it.
The exit corridor used to be where the store entrance is now. The store was smaller than today, where it is today but with the corridor taking up some of the space. A wall separated them.

I’ve a photo at home if no one beats me to it.

While Tower in TDS is amazing and possibly the best themed ToT out there, I would not want to see the store make it's way over to mgm. There is so much rich detail on and in Tokyo's tower that I don't think would be brought over, and I enjoy the Twilight Zone theme. This isn't the first time this rumor has been spread, but hopefully they will keep it as is and finally update it to ToT 5. Hahaha, doubt that will happen.
For me, as cool as Tokyo's tower is, I'd still take DHS's tower over it. The 5th dimension scene is so unique and unexpected for first time riders.

Makes complete sense.

Would anyone ever take the real elevator in such a resort?

LOL I would! The idea of a hotel also having an attraction inside it is actually pretty cool and would be unique. Maybe Martin knows more, but I think Eisner himself was the one who thought of that concept? Like a lot of things in that era, EDL's (now DLP) struggles was probably a big reason the idea/budget was scaled back.

MGM Tower was well into production before the EDL problems started to show.
