TOT Question

Okay, ready for the explanation I have from a friend of mine on my CP that was a bellhop?

How high you are originally brought up depends on which combo the computer chose. But you do go up 13 stories at some point in the ride.
The ride is operated by a...I don't remember what it's called exactly...but it's like a pump. Anyway. It is hydraulic. And it PULLS you down at 1.3 Gs. Rumor has it that an exec tried the ride before it opened to the public, and said "That wasn't good enough. If my tie doesn't fly into my face, it's not fast enough." Hence, the faster than 1 G.
The cables ARE real. They ARE strong. They are there to support the elevator car, if (heaven forbid) the hydraulic pump should stop working, and the car starts to ACTUALLY fall.

Does this clarify anything? If you need any more detail, I'll call Jeff tonight and ask him.

There is no cable, the car is on a track. If it was on a cable how would you explain the ride car to travel up one shaft, go on a track to the final drop zone, then into the exit zone. It is definitely on tracks...no cables involved.

Basically, The "elevators" dock in a fixture inside the shaft after moving horizontally into the drop shaft. It seems logical that the cables, then, are part of the docking fixture and are, in that sense, "attached" to the vehicles during the drop sequence, but not the other portions of the ride.

There are cables, please see my post above for the explanation.

What I've gathered from this:

1. Elevator car moves onto platform.

2. Cables operate platform... no cables are actually attached to the car.

I read it, I was saying on the cars themselves and that cables are not dropping and raising the cars.
The cables are part of the sytem that drops and raises the VVC vehicles. The cars you sit in (AGV's) simply enter the VVC's.

There actually are cables in Tower of Terror (sorry Thrawn). The actual elevator car is an AGV (Autonomous Guided Vehicle). These move around similar to how the GMR operates. These vehicles (the ones you actually sit in) enter what is called a VVC (Vertical Vehicle Conveyance). This VVC vehicle is what actually goes up and down with the AGV (your car) safely inside. Cables are used (but not exclusively) to operate the VVC.
You are correct, sir.
If Tower was an actual elevator, it wouldn't be the attraction it is, due to strict government guidelines.
You know that high pitched whooshing sound you hear at unload? That, my friends, is the VVC quickly making its way back to the 5th Dimension for the next AGV.

But how can a machine like the AGV fall faster than terminal velocity? Have a second ride vehicle! As the AGV guides itself into the ride shaft to ascend to the boiler room (load) level, it slots into a larger `elevator` - the VVC, or Vertical Vehicle Conveyance. This is an elevator car in the true sense, complete with cables and wheels, albeit with wire mesh for walls. It is this that lifts the AGV up through the corridor scene, and to the 5th D level. As the AGV transfers horizontally, the VVC returns to the basement level to receive the next AGV that is unloading its guests. For the drop shaft, a beefed up VVC is employed - enough to take the rigours of accelerated freefall, and with a pulley system not just on its roof to lift it like a conventional elevator, but a complete loop of cable that also pulls the entire carriage downwards as well as up - hence faster than gravity.

Where are these wenches that you can wrap around or do they only come out when your single??

I too wondered how TOTworked, then it broke when I was on it and it all became clear, even the less than magical bit of being moved in the "elevator" tro the back of the maintenance area.

I'm sure it's a faux pas to thread-drift in the thread you started but I just wanted to mention this side note. I'm totally afraid of elevators. I've done ToT twice and that's enough for me. When a friend visited me at WDW last year, I didn't want to ride but I d idn't want to leave him alone so they told me to go thru the queue with him until they loaded into the elevator. Well, guess how they get you out of there... an elevator! Aren't there stairs or something? I found that a bit odd that the chicken's exit is the very thing the chickens are afraid of.

The chicken exit is for people who are afraid the fall 13 stories faster than gravity, not those who are afraid of elevators.

I could be wrong about this but the "visible" cables that you see from the outside of the ride are just for show as suggested by by blue buddy.

Right, and when TOT is closed for a week every 2 years or so to replace the cables, that's for show as well?
