Hurricane Charley Churns Closer To Florida Coast

UPDATED: 11:57 AM EDT August 13, 2004

MIAMI -- Florida officials say the evacuation order ahead of Hurricane Charley now covers nearly 2 million people.

As it approached the coast at midmorning, Charley was packing winds of 110 mph, and it was expected to strengthen and hit the Tampa Bay area later in the day, dumping heavy rain and possibly spawning tornadoes. Many streets there were deserted Friday morning as workers were told to stay home.

Officials worried that a massive storm surge could devastate the heavily populated Gulf Coast region, with waterfront condominium towers and vulnerable mobile homes in danger.

At 11 a.m. EDT, the center of Hurricane Charley was located near latitude 25.2 north, longitude 82.8 west, or about 145 miles south of Sarasota, Fla.

Charley is moving toward the north near 18 mph, and a turn toward the north-northeast with an increase in forward speed is expected today.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles from the center, and tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles.

A spokeswoman at the state emergency operations center says about 1.9 million people from the Keys up the west coast have been told to flee. She says many will likely stay at home -- but officials estimate up to 1.5 million will seek shelter.

Officials worry some residents may not heed the warning.

At the Pinellas County Emergency Management office, Marcia Crawley said when it comes to big storms, Floridians "often get a bit complacent -- but this is the real deal!"

Another official warns those who decide to stick it out may find "No one can help you."

From what WFTV TV is saying, the hurricane will be closer to Orange/Osceola/Seminole/I-4 corridor than expected.

Looks like the eye might be right by my own house.

Would it be better to stay in Tampa?? :lookaroun

Everybody back home! :lookaroun

Charley Grows To Category 4: Winds Hit 145

Winds Increase To 145 MPH; Gov. Bush Urges Residents To Seek Shelter

UPDATED: 1:58 PM EDT August 13, 2004

MIAMI -- Officials at the National Hurricane Center in Miami have upgraded Hurricane Charley to a Category 4 storm with winds of up to 145 mph.

Charley is zeroing in on Florida's west coast Friday, where forecasters expect a massive storm surge that could devastate coastal and low-lying areas in Sarasota, Port Charlotte, Tampa and St. Petersburg.

If it remains at its current strength, Charley would be the strongest hurricane since the Category 5 Andrew hit south of Miami in 1992.
