...our principal is firing three of our best teachers at our school. The only reason being is because, and I quote, "I don't think they are adequate to teach at this school anymore. Perhaps they could be transferred."
They have been the best Grade 8 teachers at this school in its history, and our principal wants to transfer them to other schools. Today is the deadline for her little "teacher budget cut". I can guarantee that more teachers will be on the chopping block for next year.
The students at our school need to get the word out of this poor choice in education. If we could get support from international personalities, our educators might have a chance to teach at the school they know and love.

Thanks In Advance,
Dandaman

P.S. It kind of figures that our principal was transferred from another school... the entire school council quit at the last school she was at. I wonder why...

I'm sorry to hear about that...that always stinks when that happens.

However, down here in Florida, the position of Principal is one of the most powerless positions in Education. They only serve as administrators and must answer to and do the direct bidding of the County School Board. Not only that, they have to deal with the teacher's union on the other side. The principals here can not just fire any of the instructors at will. It is a decision that has to be made by the school board, and then carried out by the principal. The only real decision making ability the principals have here is hiring new staff. They don't even have control over their budget. Everything is dictated from the county school board offices.

Support the good teachers, even if they have to leave. It means a lot to them.

Yep. This is a rough situation. I'm guessing that you attend a public school so allow me to give my take on this situation. Personally, I don't think that you can just blame your principal for this situation. Budget cuts are being more and more common in many school districts throughout the nation. As voters continue to vote down school tax levies we will continue to have these problems. And once school districts begin to slip deeper and deeper into debt they have to make bogus cut backs that in a sense hadicap the students! As more and more teachers are layed off and more "extracurricular" actives are slashed the students are paying in ways that will severily hurt their futures!

One thing I will NEVER understand: How could you vote down a school levy? How selfish is our society becoming? Thing like that make me mad.

To all who vote down school levies: take a drive though East Cleveland and take a look at how depleted those schools are! That is voter selfishness in action right there!

dandaman: You have my full pledged support.... whatever I can do to help your cause!! Stay strong! You are fighting a difficult fight..... but it's a fight that many would choose to ignor! I ADMIRE YOUR COURAGE!!! You are going places in life!! STAY STRONG!! NEVER GIVE UP!!

^Thank you very much for your support!
The budget at our school, however, is good enough to buy a new scoreboard for the gym less than a month ago... It seems that the only thing our school cares about is our athleticism (we're pretty good at sports, admittedly, but it doesn't matter).
Something that scared our students is that the sports were rumoured to be cancelled for the rest of the school year. Badminton is already cancelled as of Thursday, and I hope that Track and Field is still on, because it's the only day I get to have fun and gloat...:)
...and it's not really the school board, in fact. It is the principal (I'd say about 90/10). She cancelled this year's school barbecue (a tradition that has received $2000 each year at least), and instead we had a "curricular activity", Meet The Teacher Night. The only thing funny about that is that half the school boycotted it and didn't show up...
As long as I'm venting, I'll vent good.
There was ice out on the field one day, and she announces on the PA system, "You cannot venture out onto the field unless you have on shoulder pads and helmets, preferrably football helmets, etc." So, we followed her "advice"... and did just that.
The next day, when the ice had melted, we were joking about going onto the watery field with a snorkel and flippers...
Speaking of announcements, one day our PA system shorted out during the announcements. No matter. She went through the hallways singing "O Canada" on a bullhorn, nearly running over about 10 kindergarteners.

Back to the present day. The girls in our class circle a petition to reinstate the teachers on Thursday. They are caught by our principal and forced to hand over the petition. They refuse, and she takes it by force.
Due to the right of freedom of speech, she isn't allowed to do that by law.
Now, the entire school (as well as the high school, whose scholars have many brothers and sisters being taught at our school) is protesting on Monday, March 21, for the latter half of the day. We might even get news coverage by the Windsor Star and the New WI (both local news sources). Now, the school is threatening to suspend any student who protest on Monday. If ever I was to get suspended, let it be for standing up for the teachers, the students... and our rights.
Thank you, everyone, for your ongoing support.

Agree with FLA principals.. but they can "recomend" fireings... or promotions.... or transfers here.... Mine is evil... enforcing every rule but the shoe rule...

There are a few teacjhers he brought in who are "nice" some already there were allowed to be worse....

Though in FLA... it is the board of education who says Yay or Nay on fireings...

For us, it is the Board of Education that is approving the transfers, but it is our princial who is recommending them to leave. So, we're protesting to reverse that order; teachers stay, principal goes.

But, anyways, the protest went great! Made CBC! (National news, but it might only air regional tonight at 6:00).

Sorry to hear about your teachers. Believe-it-or-not this is why we in NY have tenure and teacher unions. For a long time I was not sure what tenure meant, and grew up in an anti union home. I'm now the NYSUT local president for our teachers in Beekmantown. It's tough enough fighting a misinformed public, but when you have to put up with administrators like yours, you might as well give birth to a hippo.

Good luck with your problem. If there is anything we can do for you acroos the border let us know.

I think it's more of a local issue, but your support is greatly appreciated!
I'll keep everyone updated on the situation.

^ Some background info, she and her best friend (of whom she has designated "Cait" :) ) were thinking of the different ways we could get back at the principal. So, the idea of a lobster hidden in a desk ready to pinch her seemed only natural...
