Tipping

Hello, Ok so we got back about a month ago, and had a great time..... My husband just had a question for anyone who serves at any of the restaurants. We always tip based on our service for the evening not based on the 15-20%. Most of the time actually all of the time this trip we recieved excellent service so we left a very nice tip and then some. His question is do the servers usually tend to get the suggested 15-20%? sometimes it seems like an aweful lot, but other times it was well earned!

I know it's different all over the country, and I've never worked in the restaurant industry myself, but I have a handful of friends who are servers up here. For the most part, they get very upset if their tip is less than 18%. Of course, they never mention tipping to their guests, but they rack their brains trying to figure out what they did wrong.

Not everybody chooses to tip, and some don't go by standard percentage conventions if they do, but I think that generally, servers do tend to receive the suggested 15-20%.

IMO, 15-20% is the right thing to do.
Even if we eat at a buffet where we have minimal contact with the server, we still leave 15% as you must keep in mind that they make below minimum wage because they make tips and bank on that.

Servers in Florida make 1/2 minimum wage plus tips. Also, most servers have to "tip out" bussers, bartenders, server assistants, wine stewards etc based on their total sales. There are also some places that require servers to pay the credit card fee. (Don't think disney does it.) If you decide not to tip, or leave a minimal tip, the server may actually end up losing money off of your table. I find that most people tip 20% or more these days.

Related question? We use Tables in Wonderland - automatic 18.5% tip. We DO add to it for exceptional service - your opinion: is it enough? I worry about the staff - Father was a maitre d' & always taught me to take care of the working people....
The 18% is "enough" and like you I add to it if the service was exceptional.

I normally do the same when I use Tables in Wonderland. If the service is exceptional, I'll give more. Normally, I go with the 18%.

Since we are on the topic of tips in WDW....I have always wondered about something. Do Disney CMs have to 'tip out' to the bussers, hosts, etc? I have had several waitress jobs and I absolutely hated losing a good portion of my hard earned money. I try to leave at least 20% anywhere I go (unless the service absolutely sucked) because I know servers get paid crap and have to put up with a lot. When I use my TiW card I almost always add to it if the service was great. I usually try to tip in cash too because then it is easier for the server to do some creative accounting with their tips during tax season. :lookaroun Not to mention some restaurant owners are really shady about handing over tips left on credit cards.

Oh...and I think servers having to pay the credit card fee is insane.

My rule of thumb is if the server just does his or her job - 15%.

If I leave feeling like the server has taken an interest in my dining experience - 20%.

If I leave wanting to come back and ask specifically for a server - 25 - 30%.

If I leave feeling like the server didnt know I existed - 10%.

If I have to wait around for the server to find my credit card they lost - a priceless learning experience for the manager.;)

Oooo! Story time!

*sits indian style on the floor and waits*

At a local establishment one evening with the lovely Mrs. Hakuna and had been dealing with an inept server all night. He brings us our check, I provide my credite card. Where I was sitting, I could see the computer where he processed the transaction. He processed the transaction, went to the back area to pick up an order and delivered that order prior to dropping off the little folder with the bill and card. He dropped it and went on about his business. I opened it up and no credit card. Took us ten minutes to get him back to the table and questioned about where the card was. He went and looked for it and came back with it in hand. I asked him where it was and he said that someone had picked it up off the ground and given it to a manager.

Needless to say at this point, you could have fried an egg on my bald head I was so mad. I asked to speak to the manager and did so. He explained what had happened and I asked him, "So you are personally guaranteeing that there were no and will be no unauthorized charges made on my card as a result of your staff carelessness with my credit card?" Pretty much got nothing but "Im sorry, please come back and see us again".

Heading for the great escape.
Dont worry about tipping etiquette, the servers will tell you the intricacies at length every meal, especially if you are on the dining program. All thats missing is a hat and a copy of the Big Issue.

We had several (six, I think) TS meals this past week, and used TIW card. We left extra (more than the included 18%) on two occasions, when the service was better than the norm. Otherwise, we felt 18% was an appropriate amount.
