Thank you for explaining. Most of the Disney princesses don’t dress or act in a normatively princess-like manner for much of their respective films, so I don’t think their appeal (whether to little girls or others) lies fundamentally in that aspect of their characters, though I acknowledge that Disney merchandise tends to focus on it.
It all harkens back to when ingenue characters were not given much character beyond being nice and fawning over another beautiful person with a typically higher status. Luckily, writing has improved across the board and Tiana has a lot more character than being "just a princess."

That's why I don't think her not wearing the dress hurts her as a character or storytelling, but I was willing to concede that if viewing Tiana as a "Disney Princess," the new attraction doesn't appear to check that box. All in all, I think the Princess aspect is the least interesting aspect of her character and kind of feels forced considering her goal was just to be a business owner, so I personally don't have a need to be reminded of that aspect of her character.

Does “ingenue characters” refer to the early princesses?
Early princesses and princes. Even outside of Disney where the young lovers were often painted in broad strokes and the side characters or setting help differentiate the stories. Writers have been pushed by society to find better female voices, but also to make characters of any gender to be developed beyond a romantic trophy to be chased.

I think the early princesses get a bad rap. Cinderella in particular is a spirited young woman with real dimension to her character.

I now know how all the Gen X-ers felt when we started rolling into these forums (or equivalents) as teenagers. Our time has come and past. 🥲

Like you I'm coming up on 25 years of forums, ugh.

Wow they were around back then?

I remember circa 1998/1999 being a Junior in high school and just wanting to find a video of Splash Mountain on the internet. All I could find was a tiny little grainy 10 second snippet on the Disneyland website. I think they had a little video snippet of every ride that you could click on. Crazy to think that 25 years ago if you wanted to see a video of an attraction that meant you had to have brought a camcorder on the ride and filmed it yourself. Or watch the Disneyland version of Disney Sing alongs.

I know I started with RatChat back in the early 2000's. Until I made Dusty mad.

The marquee signage would look loads better if the "beanstalk" posts were instead Frontierlandesque wooden posts maybe in the same color family as the Tiara tower? I get what they were going for (especially now that's it's known we shrink within the attraction) but it's so dang ugly!

That’s because the old WED guys came from animation and then passed down their knowledge to the next generation and so forth. I think what we’re seeing now is current imagineers overly concerned with or relying on tech as well as the fact that at some point the knowledge just wasn’t passed down. Or perhaps the knowledge was not respected or absorbed.

This, right here.
