Tiana's Bayou Adventure: Disneyland Watch & Discussion

All in that wondrous D23 article I linked. I just noticed this part as well-

"As for Tiana’s cloche hat? “I imagined she is a person who walks into the bayou very often and gathers her own straw grass,” Muldrow says. “She hangs it up in a bundle and dries it, then crochets it into a hat. We used natural things right from the swamp.”"

Upon review of the 53 flailing Tiana AA's in the ride... she's not wearing a cloche hat anywhere. THE CULTURAL IMMERSION IS RUINED!!!!!

I never understood why they needed to have so much backstory in this attraction, down to the personalities of the animals. Very unprecidented. Did they know they were making a dud and wanted to generate hype? Or dare I say......justification?

Could you imagine in 1967 a press release coming out saying, "Meet the Pirate John Smyth. When he is not pillaging and burning down towns or auctioning off women, he likes to spend his free time crocheting and reading bedtime stories to his children. But be careful....he might be prone to tossing out a joke or two."

No kidding. None of those animal personalities they talked about mean anything, or show up, or can even be sensed on this ride. And that's with WDW's slower ride system with staged stops and starts throughout. Now imagine it on Disneyland's ride system as your log bangs and flies through the flume at twice the speed.

There's got to be a whole bunch of Imagineers up in the cool hangout in heaven laughing now. They created this iconic Pirates auction scene, and not a single biography or backstory was written for any of them. And the audience loved it!

2024: Who are these people? I can't connect with them unless I know their backstory. I am NOT immersed without a backstory!

I could only guess what type of HR approved drivel the 2020's Imagineers and the Parks Blog writers would come up with to describe Old Bill the drunk's backstory, as he continues on his wellness journey. Here kihhty kihhty kihhhhty... hic!

You are absolutely nailing it with these old Parks Blog quotes about this ride. 🤣

You can't make this up, because WDI already said it and put in on the Internet. On purpose.

Ok, I just realized what it is about TBA’s “story” that really ticks me off, especially as a Princess and the Frog fan:

After all that pre-opening talk about food co-ops and community and Tiana’s Dad’s sacrifice for his country…

When all is said and done… What the creators of this ride ACTUALLY did…

They demoted most of the cast of The Princess and The frog into a brief cameo in the finale and made a conscious, deliberate decision to center the story around a bunch of new, generic-looking animal characters that COULD HAVE COME FROM ANY OTHER FILM.

What the hell???? Did they have so little faith in the source IP? Was this all, in the end, just a way to sell a line of new animal plushies?

I’m actually fairly certain that this project was approached with good intentions. But I think somewhere along the path, they lost their way and ended up with this bland, generic animal-fest replacing all the thrills and excitement and fantastic humor of the film’s world.

I’m disappointed, but not the least bit surprised.
