Tiana's Bayou Adventure: Disneyland Watch & Discussion

I went to Disneyland on Saturday the 21st and was there from park open to park close. Here is my honest review for Tiana’s, out of 10.

0/10. It never opened.

Say whatever you want about the source material, or whatever ride issues Splash had, at least it could actually open for Guests. That they were able to take an attraction that could operate reliably from park open to park close for over 30 years and screw it up so bad that it needs to close early, if it ever opens at all, is just pathetic.

Hey, I thought I told you to go on the 14th?

Oh believe me, I didn’t forget your recommendation! We were going with a friend who had never been and shortly after I made that post, they let me know the 14th would no longer work with their schedule. 🤣

We had a good time otherwise, all things considered. We did pretty much everything else in the park, including breakfast at Plaza Inn and dinner at Cafe’ Orleans. You get one chance to make a first impression, though, and this was TBA’s for all three of us.

Although I doubt he was too heartbroken about it. When we walked over to the standby entrance to talk to the CMs, he saw the sign and was like, “Wait, who is Tiana?” lol

Glad you guys had a good day and got to ride everything… except Tiana. How were the crowds? I guess it couldn’t have been too bad if you got to ride everything but then again maybe you only had Enchanted Tiki Room and Pooh on your list 😉. How were the LL return times?

So it was obviously crowded, though it wasn't anything we weren't used to (especially after having worked there for over half a decade). Our plan was pretty standard: get there at opening and utilize Lighting Lanes whenever possible. We also paid for the individual line skip for Rise.

We took our time with breakfast and had a lighting lane ready to go for Space right afterwards. In terms of return times, the only ones that were unreasonable were Indy and Matterhorn, because they were both also having intermittent issues throughout the day and kept shutting down and coming back up. On any of our return times we didn't wait longer than 20 minutes each, I wanna say. We got lucky with Matterhorn and Indy, too, because we just happened to be in the right place at the right time when they came back up (in Indy's case, we were in line at the Bengal BBQ and saw then open up, then hopped right in line).

Getting lucky was a recurring theme (other than Tiana's, of course), lots of stuff just sort of "happened to work out". We got in line for "it's a small world" holiday while waiting for another Lighting Lane to kick in, but it just happened to be while the parade was going by that area so the posted 45 minute wait time ended up being 10 minutes after we walked by all the clueless Guests in line who refused to move forward because they were more interested in filming the parade on their phones than they were in moving forward for the attraction they were queued up for.

The Fantasyland stuff and Toontown we knocked out in quick succession using standby late at night (around 11pm), nothing other than Pan was longer than a 5-10 minute wait. Mickey and Minnie's was posted as a 20 but we walked right on (the cartoon they play took longer than the line we waited in).

We were in the park from roughly 7:30am to midnight, so we didn't go wanting for much by the end of it all. Aside from Tiana's, it was a good time. I think the longest wait of the day for us was our first ride through Haunted Mansion Holiday (we went twice), because we actually wanted to see the new queue at least once. That wait was maybe around 45 minutes. We also waited maybe around 20 to 30 for the Canoes because they only had 2 out on the river at the time. Other than that, I want to say we waited around 20 minutes or less for pretty much everything else. :D

From Disneyland Musican on YouTube, carvings of Gritty and Beau have been installed at the photo preview. Beau looks fine enough, but Gritty looks awful.

Just rode today and...the videos do it justice. Lots of dead dark areas, flat set design, and feels over and done. The final Tiana was broken and was just standing erect with her eyes darting back and forth.

Also....how is THIS the final product?

You have a nice car so people will take pictures, I assume. So you cover the themed mountain walls with what feels like a temporary fence?

Attempted to ride this yesterday for the first time via single rider. Got to the front of the entrance and commented to my friend that it's good we're getting it in before it breaks down. GUESS WHAT HAPPENED 12 SECONDS LATER!

Anyway, eight hours later I finally made it on. I'll say this - the well-dressed scenes are well dressed and the first half of the dark ride portion made me forget what was where in Splash (at least in the moment). The former Laughing Place though? Yeesh. Did we just lose interest there?

As the ride ended, only one phrase came to mind: "too many cooks." That aspect of the story process makes itself glaringly clear on the lift hill. Mama Odie starts by telling us she's about to make us big again via the drop. But at the top of the hill, she tells us she knows a shortcut to the party! Did we get big in the 15 seconds up the hill? I thought the drop was making us big again!

So we go down the drop - yay, still fun, still good.

But then in the finale, they're singing "Special Spice," the finale song to what sounds like a completely different ride. "Your very special spice makes us complete." Mama Odie's sendoff reflects a similar message. Very clearly, this is the conclusion to an old plotline, yeah? I thought we were finding band members. Guessing the song was commissioned/paid for and when the new plotline was concocted, they didn't want to pay for a new tune. By "guessing" I mean "that's absolutely what happened. Come on now."

I don't mean to be totally down on this thing -- I wanted Tiana to get a good ride here. However, they seem to have made it a priority to gut anything appealing about her character. It's as though they were so afraid to make anything slightly problematic that they ended up...with nothing.

Side note: I met Tony Baxter at a panel a few weeks back and we got to talking about Splash. He mentioned that he finally rode TBA and he had no kind words about their all-party-all-the-time approach to the tone. (He also had no idea why they play "dig a little deeper" as you're going UP.)

On that note, the "everyone welcome" trying-so-hard-to-be-inclusive signage/messaging splattered throughout this thing felt so forced and empty. (For context: I'm about as lefty and hippy dippy as they come.) I dunno, it just felt like they were given a canvas and were afraid to use any colors other than beige.

Also, two of the Tianas didn't work and the final Odie's mouth didn't move. That would be fine...if the ride's figures were on a more even playing field throughout. See, when they clearly put money into 5 animatronics and left the rest of the "animatronics" to be still figures that sway or whatever, it really becomes glaring when one of the actual animatronics is on the fritz. The whole experience takes a hit. Splash, with its consistent "fine at best" animatronics, never had this problem.

Fewer egos on the writing of these things, please.

Oh to be a fly on the wall after Tony rode and was out of the public eye

The parks as a whole were a mess last night. At the end of the night, we had the following attractions down prematurely:

  • Pirates
  • Tiana
  • Rise
  • Pinocchio
  • Toad
Many of the shops were also closed prior to end of the night. With Mansion, Pirates, Tiana, and Rise all down, I guess I understand as the only thing West of Indy was Pooh.

Indy itself was quite an odd journey. We kept getting stuck for about 25 seconds each segment. We'd be in the dark at the new projection hall (former rat room.) We would then pull forward to the next screen. Sit idling for another 30-seconds to a minute. Then the scene would play. Then we would approach the dart hall and stop. And so on until disembark.

Pirates was pretty much down all day. Much to my daughter’s displeasure. We left around 7pm though.

The sad part is even if they wanted to fix this attraction the optics of calling up Tony to help wouldn’t be great. With that said, we all know what needs to be done to help fix this attraction. It’s not rocket science. Tony would just do it better.

They told the one person who had the ability to make this a good attraction to get lost.

All respects to Tony but there’s a lot of people who could have told them that in order to tell a compelling narrative story based on a movie and part of a thrill ride you need an antagonist and conflict.

I don’t think he’s the only person but he’s clearly one of the best possible options (probably the best) and should have been given that opportunity considering the attraction TBA replaced. Actually given the opportunity though. Not just his name being thrown out there as a PR stunt.
