Wow, that's crazy, all of my criticisms about the "unfinished" work are still there in the finished work. Who'd have thought?
In person, it doesn’t draw a lot of attention to itself at this point. Comes across as a nice burst of color behind the train station. It’s kinda… soothing?

Maybe to some. That is fair to have that opinion.

What is frustraitng is this is the cycle.

We can hype and praise things before it is done based on what is teased.
It can't be critiqued those until it is finished.
While under work, it should not be judged becuase it is not done, but the photo mention is never relevant.
Then it moves towards "you can't judge it from online images and videos"

I’m cutting the mural a lot of slack today because there’s no upcharge for some night event to look at it.

It looks like…. Pandora?

Maybe this is good because it will differentiate it from big thunder and let it stand as its own thing rather than simply keeping an exterior very reminiscent of splash but with Mardi Gras scenes inside. Splash was initially designed to blend in with big thunder and flow together with the rest of the land.

From Big Thunder’s queue, the new greenery seems to be a nice contrast that helps the desert area pop. At least at this stage.

Oh, I’d just like to add that, now having seen it in person, I think the placement of MK’s Hatbox Ghost really, really, really sucks eggs. Makes no sense, comes outta nowhere, is not the least bit scary or threatening, has zero impact and leaves no impression. Just my opinion.

Gives a lot of hope for teams that are retrofitting animatronics into spaces doesn't it?

Well… I’m holding onto optimism and hoping HatBox’s awful location (it’s as if he’s a newly-arrived prima donna ghost who never read the script!) was an executive decision the Imagineers had no say in. 😬

Yeah, surely Imagineers have a bigger say in a direct from a movie studio production!

At Magic Kingdom today. Dare I say it: This is starting to look really pretty.

I don’t know… doesn’t look like a salt mine to me. 😉

It really is looking good, I’d hoped all the hoops they jumped through to try to make the ride make sense wouldn’t affect the final outcome of the ride and (at least on the exterior) it looks like they won’t.

I still don’t think it’s finished, or at least I hope it isn’t, it’s the one thing I’ve seen so far I still don’t like.

I confess to never having understood his appeal regardless of his placement. I’ve yet to see the new version, but the one at Disneyland does very little for me.

The interior of Splash/Tiana has been gutted. It’s a blank canvas for WDI.

That remains to be seen. What we do know is the ride path remains the same to go through it, not totally a blank canvas. Staging will have to adhere to the pacing and design of the flume. (See Frozen Forever After staging limitations and shortcuts)

Here is hoping it is designed well to the path, pace and staging.

For my generation, he was sort of the pre-opening day “face” of Haunted Mansion, with that now-familiar photo of him being tweaked by Imagineering appearing in articles about the ride. And then the ride opened and he wasn’t there and, there being no internet, all we Disney News Magazine-subscribing kids could do was wonder what happened to him. Slowly the false rumors spread (people claimed they heard he was deemed too scary, that someone died, etc) until finally the truth emerged (the hatbox effect just didn’t work as planned).

And THEN he was included in the popular HM storybook LP, which informed us 1960’s kids of his intended role: He was supposed to have been the bride’s groom in the attic scene. So, for us, he’s always been a “missing” piece of Haunted Mansion, and that’s why some of us were overjoyed to finally see him “come home.” We had been literally waiting 50 years to see that guy’s head disappear from his shoulders and appear in that hatbox. I was not disappointed. 😄

In MK, however, his bizarre placement by the endless hallway pretty much wrecks the original storyline and buildup to the ballroom, as the ghosts are not supposed to be visible to us living mortals until AFTER the seance. And MK’s bride is still alone.

2023 Disney, everyone! (Insert kazoo fanfare).

Fair. It's a blank canvas in terms of theming, but the basic flume infrastructure will remain unchanged. I'll admit, I never thought the pacing of Disneyland's Splash was flawless, so I'm not going to insist upon perfection for Tiana. But to your point, let's hope they avoid the issues we see at Frozen Ever After. Snow White's Enchanted Wish and Adventureland Treehouse give me hope that WDI has learned how to retool existing attractions with competence.
