I just had a conversation with my Movie Making class about movies and one kid said PatF was their favorite. Well I asked "Did you hear Disney's making a ride for it?"

"Oh yeah...aren't they getting rid of the racist ride?"

I just bought a Song of the South DVD on Amazon for $20. Lots of folks had questions as to whether it's legit or not. With copyright ending in 2021, folks guessed that Disney let Brian's Retro Collection sell it so they could make a few bucks without blowback.
It's a bootleg for sure. Disney would not do that.

I have a interesting little story about a bootleg: I have a uncle who is an elementary school teacher, and the school he works at had a bootleg Song of the South VHS tape in it's collection. Every once in a while they show movies to the kids. According to my uncle, that tape was shown commonly back in the 90s and 2000s. Eventually the school got rid of all their tapes and it ended up in my possession for a brief time (I do not have it currently). I got some screencaps here:

Song of the South bootlegging was apparently such a problem during the early 2000s that people were getting raided by the feds for it:

Richard Montague Powell, 66, was arraigned Tuesday in federal court in Charleston on charges that he made up to $250,000 by pirating copies of Walt Disney’s motion picture “Song of the South.”
If convicted of violating federal copyright laws, Powell faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

A search of Powell’s residence turned up hundreds of unauthorized copies of the motion picture on DVD and VHS, according to U.S. Attorney Strom Thurmond Jr. Numerous firearms also were seized.

Powell may have netted a small fortune — as much as $250,000 — from sales of the movie over a three-year period, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

It was withdrawn worldwide in December 2001.
Honestly I didn't know that. Thought it was still good to buy in other countries
It never made it past VHS & Laserdisc internationally. That December 2001 withdrawal really was intentionally planned and coordinated. The US Disney company allegedly sent a memo to all their international branches, explicitly ordering them to pull all copies from shelves and never release the film again. Disney has been terrified of this movie for a very long time, arguably for good reason.

Wow! How the heck does Amazon get away with selling bootleg copies?
It's individual sellers going and listing their bootleg copies on Amazon. I've heard stories of Disney taking down eBay listings of bootlegs of Song of the South, so perhaps they try to do the same for Amazon but they aren't able to get everyone.

I found a VHS copy at my local library about 7 or 8 years ago.

Anybody who doesn't think this movie is problematic at this point, I just don't understand.

There is literally a background song from the other *sharecroppers* about how great their life is and they'll never leave the plantation, which foreshadows Remus leaving later. It's easily missed because it's not Zip-a-Dee or in the animated sequences.

I dare say people still defending the film haven't seen the whole thing or haven't seen it as an adult.

The lyric I'm referring to happens at about 38 minutes into the film, setting up the tar baby sequence. The chorus of *sharecroppers* (which sounds much more like a standard Hollywood chorus of the day, nothing like sharecroppers singing) sings:

"Let the rain pour down
Let the cold wind blow
Gonna stay right here in the home I know"

I think this pretty much sums up that the film has a clear message of *maybe things weren't so bad*

That lyric foreshadows how Remus leaves the plantation later, only to return almost immediately for the sake of the white kid. This always has made me feel like Remus had his chance to escape but just came right back to "the home I know"

After this lyric, the plot moves along to the tar baby sequence, which is set up by "How Do You Do" with themes from that song continuing through the scene with the tar baby. And of course "How Do You Do" is prominent in Splash Mtn. So really with the ride having the beehive replacing the tar baby...that doesn't really change enough for Splash to not be referencing that sequence in the movie. Anyone who has seen the film knows what's being avoided in the ride.

Honestly, as an 11 year old at Disneyworld for the first time over 20 years ago I thought: "What the heck? They made a ride about that movie?" My family didn't ride. And not just because it was a colder day in January.
