The Disney Parks Blog confirms the extended closure of Big Thunder starting Jan 7th, 2013.

Updates being made to the attraction will include:
  • New ride vehicles (but don’t worry – they’ll still look like the trains that you know and love!)
  • Track replacement (but the attraction will still follow its current course)
  • Repainting portions of the mountain itself (Walt Disney Imagineering has once again carefully studied Bryce Canyon for inspiration)

Shame that I won't be able to enjoy it during my first visit in 5 years but of all the attractions that COULD have been closed when I go, I'm glad it was Thunder, one of the attractions that's at least not incredibly different from it's MK counterpart.

A giant crane is currently "destroying family photos and ruining vacations";) as part of Thunder's big refurbishment.

I don't think there has been this large of a crane in DL in quite some time.

Oh gosh, I hope not.

You know, I've heard the complaints on the board and our visit to WDW last month I was able to see what they did to the HM. I really didn't mind it. We all thought it was kinda neat, and didn't really jack with the ride itself.

If they do something like they did with Indiana Jones at DL, I wouldn't mind it. Subtle stuff is welcome, especially for that long line.

I agree, if it's like Indy, I wouldn't mind at all. Indy's queue is interactive, but only slightly. It's not in your face with it. If they decide to make it like that for Thunder, I'd be completely fine with it.

The Disney Parks Blog is confirming the refurbishment of the Rainbow Ridge Mining Town.

http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/bl...-mountain-railroad-update-at-disneyland-park/

When the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment is complete this fall, Rainbow Ridge Mining Town will look very much the same as it always has. It is being refurbished with new materials, but many items from the original area will be reused such as props, signs and select doors, windows and shutters. Several other items are being turned over to the Disney Archives.
