This is how I roll! Share your trip reporting methods!

No, it's not a trip report but I figured it belongs here since it's about trip reporting methods. I've been thinking about a thread for this topic for a long time. I think it'd be a great tool for us trip reporters!

There's more than one way to skin a cat. Let's compare notes. If you've never written a trip report but enjoy reading them, here's some insight into what we do to make them happen. Perhaps you'll be inspired to throw a report out there in the future.

Okay. First of all, I freakin' loooove to write. Always have. Second, being the momma a reoccuring theme in ever single Walt Disney World trip we've taken as a family (January 2004 - present) is capturing and preserving the memories so we'll have them forever. Before I was inspired to try my hand at trip reporting this was in the form of taking a gazillion and 1 pictures. Trip reporting has taken this to a whoooole new level. I don't believe I could go on another family vacation anywhere without writing a trip report for it. It's what I do now and relatives have come to expect no less. LOL!

My inspiration. I credit Hollybelle's report from her & Brett's first stay at the Contemporary for a conference. That report is the one that got me thinking I could not only DO a trip report, I could smoke one out there. Yeah. Did I mention I like to write a little?

Trip reporting is something I've planned ahead for since I started doing them. They've all been intentional. The results haven't always been what I wanted and a few times I've been disappointed in myself. In the end, the pro's of my better reports outweigh the negatives in my less-than-stellar pieces so I'm still feeling them. You can certainly expect to see more reports out of me whenever I travel to WDW (or anywhere) in the future.

To plan ahead for trip reporting I make sure I have the tools I need: a fun little notebook complete with fine-tip sharpie, a bag to carry around the parks that will accomodate everything, a camera (or at minimum my iPhone), my laptop, and an external storage device.

When on vacation I always carry a bag of some sort. I favor smaller cross-body bags or smaller backpacks. This is not the type of bag I carry around in day-to-day life (I'm a Disney Dooney junky). I don't like the thought of carrying my pricier, more valuable bags/purses around theme parks so I find bags cheap on eBay, while on vacation, or I make them. My bag has to have room to conveniently carry my little notebook w/pen, camera, cell phone, lip gloss, compact, comb, a small bottle of ibuprofen, and a small change purse to hold a few bucks, my ID, room key, and AP. Ideally there are pockets to keep things seperate so I'm not putting my AP or room key up against the cell phone or camera. Don't need to demagnetize anything important. In recent years I've favored cross-body style bags more because they're easier to access on the fly. I used to love the fact that at bag search I could just hold it up & open for the security folks to dig thru but last trip a couple times I was asked to take it off completely before they would check.

The notebook. I like cute stuff. My favorite notebook I've used so far was my Up! Adventure Journal that came with the Blue Ray. Love this one! I don't like full-size like 8 1/2x11. It has to get stashed in my bag so a mid-size works best.

The camera. Most commonly I use a point & shoot. I have 2. One is a Nikon and the other is a Panasonic HD video camera that also has a 12 mp (I think) still option. Both are user-friendly but the Nikon seems to do better on the stills. I have used my iPhone 4 in a pinch. Those pics aren't the greatest but it amazes me how far the capabilities have come. I think with some photography apps & practice it could really become the easiest solution in the future. Also, my oldest kiddo got an entry-level Canon Rebel XS set-up from Santa for Christmas in '09. He carries his camera often. Sometimes the hubby will carry it for him & take pics also. I incorporate some of their pics into my reports as well.

Part of our night time routine on vacation is cleaning off memory cards for all cameras. I "file" all or pics into a file structure set up on my external drive. I file by year-->destination/month of travel-->date-->name of person who's camera the pics came from. Each day has it's own file folder and each person on each day has their own file folder. This is the way we do things because we like to make sure we always have plenty of space on our memory cards and prevent a larger photo loss if a memory card/camera is lost. We've lost a camera at WDW before and weren't lucky enough to have it turned in to Lost & Found. Those lost pictures have haunted me for years.

Note-taking. I have the WORST memory. My mind has so many things that I'm trying not to forget and stay on top of at all times that I forget things about like Dory does. I have to take notes or the details will melt together into a big memory gumbo that tastes fantastic as a whole but it can be a challenge to pick out each and every ingredient. I make notes every chance I get. If we're on a bus I'll whip out my notebook and jot down a few notes. Slow lines, at restaurants before or after a meal, if the guys are having an ice cream, etc., if there's a couple minutes of being even semi-still I'll scrawl out a few bullets with key words touching on what we've been up to & things I thought were note worthy. If something funny or interesting happens I'll wait and make sure to write a more detailed narrative to keep the details whole. I should scan a few pages to show y'all. The notebooks are a mess. It's the minimum needed for me to remember and write later.

Composition. I've seen this addressed in obviously different styles. Some people like to type out their entire narrative in a word processing program before they even start posting everything on the forums while others literally type if out on the fly as they're uploading pics. I've done all sorts of combinations of these methods. My first TR I typed about half and had a few days of pics uploaded before I started posting. My May of '09 trip was written entirely on the fly as things were uploading...it never had anything typed up prior in a word processing program. January '10 was hard for me to get the perspective I wanted. I started typing that one out, deleted, started again, deleted again, etc. like 4 or 5 times before I thought I was even close to getting the perspective where I needed it to be. I think I probably had that one nearly complete and about 1/2 the pics uploaded before I started throwing it up on the forum. I much prefer the way I handled the elements this past trip in November. I spent a whole day combing the pics & editing. I kept a window open with my pictures, my notebook next to me, and flashed back & forth between the two the entire time I wrote my narrative. The writing combined the two elements into a more cohesive story. I wrote for the pics and used the pics that reflected the notes. It all flowed better that way. Every pic I used for reference got uploaded as I typed. By doing the report this way I had the entire narrative typed and every pic I intended to use uploaded BEFORE I started posting anything on the forum.

Posting. Even with everything complete & ready to go before the actual report starts posting there's still a lot of work to be done. Cutting/pasting text bits with pic links in the right places takes time. Generally I try to do some level of proofing again as I'm posting but, as you know, I don't catch every typo or gramatical error.

Time. Typical timeframes to put together a trip report are as follows:

**Picture editing: 4+ hours. I don't edit like some of the hobbyist photogs. I'm just out to kill the red eyes & capture what I'm talking about by cropping as needed.

**Text writing/typing: For our 9-10 night trips I'd estimate about 30-40 hours.

**Photo upload to Photobucket: Usually about half as long as it takes to write the text. I like doing this while I'm typing the text so I can kill 2 birds.

**Assembly for forum posting: I'd estimate this at a little more than a third as long as it takes to write up the text. It's a lot of flashing between windows copying & pasting. Oh and the **worst** is when you mess up and hit the little red "x" to exit a window instead of the little yellow "_" to minimize. This usually will trigger a string of curses from me. LOL!

**Responding to guest comments: Eh, that's the payback for all the work. I have no clue. Probably more time than I'd guess because I get lost in it.

**Reading trip reports back with my family: Hours and hours. Then there's re-reads and the pauses to regain our composure. It's another reason I even post trip reports. We relive our adventures together which is completely awesome!

For the future I'd like to think I'll copy/paste and assemble my narratives with the pics into working documents that I can print out and save the way HollyBelle does. I have yet to take the time to do this. Perhaps I'll set this as a goal for this year so I can present the volumes to my family as a Christmas gift. That'd be fun. I could print copies for each of the boys to put in their big memory boxes full of their life mementos and keepsakes.

So there it is. That's the long version of how I go about trip reporting. How about y'all? Anyone else wanna share their methods? Did I scare any potential reporters away from giving it a shot on their next adventure?

Interesting topic. I tend to be a minimalist with Trip Reports - my first reports were my Top Ten WDW Insights gained from my trips and my last few have been primarily photo-based with a bit of description and captions for the photos.

Just like the OP , I too keep a notebook and pen in my pocket throughout the trip and don't remember anything without writing it down right away. I'm a lousy photographer, so I just take a bunch of pictures of what's going on and hope they're usable.

When I get home, I comb through my notes and pictures for highlights and wacky stuff that may be of interest. I create an outline and pick out all of the pictures that will be used. I pre-write the first two or three installments before starting the thread and wait to upload pictures until right before posting a segment that will use them. I try to keep text short.

Once it's complete, I save it off in a folder on my laptop with the pictures so that I have a backup copy. I don't use any special software; I just have the text from the report in one Word doc and the pictures as jpeg files in the same folder. That's good enough for me.

I think at first I worried that I'd be too wordy in my TRs then I figured if the reader doesn't want to read they'll skim forward. I know I do this from time to time. Don't we all? Glad I'm not the only one with the bad memory. I read others who say, "Oh I remember everything" and I'm wow'd. Everything jumbles up so bad and it bugs me.

Thank you for this thread!! I really needed to kill some time tonight and it helps to get everyone's takes on how they write their reports. Never hurts to have some last minute tips either!!

Here's my little tidbits about reports:

*I love to write as well. My TR are my 'scrapbooks' persay, where I can go back to relive every magical moment of my beloved WDW trips. I save them in wdwmagic.com under Subscribed Threads.

*I agree, there's no way I could take another trip without writing a report. I hate that I can't remember every detail from our first trip to WDW back in June of 2008, I just have a handful of pics because somewhere back then when I quit on MySpace, my pics were lost. I have a family blog, and nowadays I write reports for everything! Vacations, crafts we do, races we run, everything!!

I don't use any fancy notebooks. Actually it is usually that little pad o' paper that the hotel gives you. See, there IS a use for it! ;) I jot down notes throughout the trip whenever there is a lull, and then at the end of the day, right before lights out I am sure to write down any other details I missed.

I bring a laptop to "dump" photos and videos on every night, otherwise I'd never have enough storage. This trip we've got an external hard drive. :drevil: I am also always sure to check battery power and charge everything up every night. This year, I'll be dumping pics into a file labeled with each day's date. Simple as that.

In my past trips, I've had a nice compact P&S, a Sony Cybershot. It is a nice camera for a P&S, and it's small enough to fit in my water-cover so I can take lots of pics at the WPs. This year I got a new camera! It's a simple upgrade, to a Nikon Coolpix camera with HD video capability. I can't wait to play with it at WDW! (It's the camera from the Ashton Kutcher commercials...) Over the years, mostly thanks to the pics I see on this board, I have gotten better at taking pictures, and I've learned how to use our photo-editting software. It's just Microsoft Office Picture Manager, but it works great for me! I don't delete hardly any pics until I have a chance to look at them with the software. I've been able to salvage so many pics with the program that in the past I would have took one look at and deleted. Not anymore!

Ok composition:

#1: Edit photos. I can't stand using terrible photos, after all I would like to have the final product on the trip report to read over and over.

#2: Download said photos to photobucket. This takes forever. While I'm waiting for photos to load, I'm doing #3.

#3: Write up the report, inserting the image code from photobucket right to the Word document. Most of the time when I go to copy and paste to the TR it goes over just fine. Sometimes I have to re-copy and past the image file right to the thread. I have to say, in the past, I'd done #1 and #2 and then I'd write up the report in the thread using the notes and photos as reference. From here on out, I'm just using a Word document.

#4: Posting: I try to be quite organized, giving each day a title of some sorts. The title will usually include Day #, Park visited, and maybe a tidbit or silly comment about the day. I try to use minimal emoticons so I can max out the picture # per post.

That's about it! I love responding to comments. I don't mind when people post in the middle of the report. I have thought about doing the report like some of the others, who save post #s based on how many they think the report will take, then there are no "interruptions". But I personally don't mind the interruptions.

I've been thinking about my TR since it's almost time to go. I know when I get back I'll have schoolwork to do, but I'll want to do the TR instead!!

Got your message! Thanks for waving to me! I can't wait for you to get home and write your report. I looooove running even reports!

When I go one trips I always make sure I have a little notebook of some sort. Somethign that will fit easily into the small bag I carry around the parks. Typically I'll buy a really cute one. One of my all-time favorites is an 8X5.5 with Homer Simpson on it. I got this back in 2004 and took it on our honeymoon the following year. :D For my recent Disney trips I found a really awesome notebook with vintage Mickey (appropriate notebook is appropriate.) I also use a nice clicky, bright colored pen. Orange has been the color of choice lately.

But enough about notebooks and pens!

I also enjoy to write and I try really hard to get as many details as I can into my reports. Since I'm very chronologically inclined when I write, I depend greatly on how my pictures are organized on my laptop. Love the 'sort by date taken' option  Sadly I do not bring it with me when I travel just because I hate to worry about it and I never had much down-time when we're at Disney....unless of course we're on a trip longer than 5 days. Then I will find the time!

Pictures play a huge part in my travel writing because I reference so much off of them. What's funny is that sometimes when I look at a picture it will trigger another memory that helps with the details.

Okay...how I roll...

I will go through all the pictures first and start editing them. Nothing really fancy, my husband tends to take of that if needed (he rocks on PhotoShop.) Once I have everything organized and how I like it, I keep the folder open on my laptop and start typing away in Word.

When I'm ready to post I go day by day and having everything all typed up makes it easy. I like being able to respond to any comments I get in between posts.

I would love to post a honeymoon trip report from 2005. Kind of like a Trip Report Rewind. I remember sooooooo much from that trip even though it's been a few years.

P.S. Great thread idea!

I think we're onto a reoccuring theme that I really did think was just me: the importance of a cool little notebook. Seriously. I'm glad to know I'm not just being weird about that. It's weird but makes sense. We're pouring our adventure into words and the starting point is the all-important notebook. That piece of the process neeeeeeds to be one that truly represents us. Or okay, I'm being weird again. LOL! And I'm jealous of you people who can remember the past trips so clearly! I wish I did. I remember bits and pieces but then I can look at our pictures then try to visualize that moment and there's nothing other than picture I just looked at.

Cool thread idea!

I've only posted a Pre-Trip Report (with pictures) so far, but I will be posting the actual Trip Report next month so be on the look out!

I typed everything out in full using Word. My husband is a journalist so I use him as my Editor! However, I took journalism in school and I absolutely love to write so like so many of you have said, I plan to use my TRs as a form of "scrapbooking".

This thread is great! I've already seen some advice I plan on using on my upcoming trip. I already have my notebook purchased. It's a tiny notebook that came with a "fold out" pen, I plan on just throwing it in my light weight bag that I'll keep wipes, chap stick and my camera in.

I like the idea of copying the photo link right into my Word document. I will try that next time.

I also like the idea of "binding" my Trip Reports. I have tons of photo scrapbooks but I never thought to bind the written part. I just planned on stuffing it in a sheet protector at the back of my scrapbook.

Keep the ideas coming!

Oh yay! Looking forward to your report! Glad you found some useful info here. I'm still thinking some on the binding. Working with the Mac programs adds a twist so I gotta figure out the easiest way to get from point A to point B on that. But I'm busy and don't have time to think about it. I'll think about it tomorrow. LOL!

So glad you started this thread! I was thinking about writing my first TR on my upcoming trip next week. I wasn't exactly sure how to go about it; whether I was going to write it on the fly or write it out in a word document first. Reading everyone's strategies is giving me an idea of how I want to go about mine.

I don't think mine will be nearly as good as some of yours though. :) I have a terrible memory, but I don't think I'll be toting around a notebook since I like to travel as light as possible in the parks. I will have my trusty iPhone with me at all times and I figure I'll write little notes when we stop to eat or take breaks.

To those of you who make such awesome TR's, thank you so much! I (and I'm sure so many others as well) appreciate all the time you put into sharing your Disney adventures with us. You've inspired me to try different things, take more creative pictures, etc.

I don't think my TRs are all that but it seems others enjoy them. Write your report for you and everything else is lagniappe. The notebook thing isn't essential. Some people can review their pics and have good enough memories to write on the fly. Wish I did. The notebook part isn't bad as long as you don't get a big ol' fat notebook. I love reading TRs because I learn a lot from them, too. Sometimes the best tips come from observing others! And believe me, as a TR writer, we appreciate the READERS! So thank YOU for your kind words and support.

Great thread idea!

I too, enjoy writing, although this upcoming trip is the first one I'm really shooting to do a good trip report. I even have a pre-trip report running right now... nothing too exciting, but just somewhere to share the little updates of how things are coming together.

As I sat and read through the posts above, I find it funny that i haven't written a trip report yet for Disney, because I've done "trip reports" both big and small for the online travel business I co-own. Why I haven't done it for Disney up til now, I don't know.

Camera and notebook generally go with on all of the little trips we take to review a location or develop an itinerary. I would definitely need to be a little more "organized" and take a few notes while on vacation at Disney though, because moments on the trip certainly blur and blend together, even right after we get back.

What are you waiting for?! Oh yes! Write some Disney TRs for us! Please?! I'm like you, I gotta take notes or by the end of the trip the memories are all blended together and it's near impossible to pick the mess apart. Makes me feel really ditzy on some level. Writing the notes throughout the day isn't a disruption for me, in fact it's a welcome break for my mind and an escape for my conscience. Plus, the guys like to look over my shoulder and remind me of things that I should make note of. It's all good!

I'm chiming in again to see if I'm the only one who does things a certain way. I have never thought to put the report on Word, and then copy and paste to the forum. I have always typed the whole thing as a "reply" on the forum, complete with photos and text. I then "highlight" enough of the report to include the ten images allowed, and hit "submit reply". Then, I go back to the reply page, highlight the following section, and hit submit reply again. I have always been able to do the report in one shot this way, and this method has always assured my ability to secure consecutive posts within the report thread. Am I being dumb? Is it easier to simply cut and paste from Word?

I need to try this! I think you are onto something. Going back and forth between windows cutting/copying and pasting is really tedious. Then if you're doing it for a while at some point you'll click the wrong thing and cut something you didn't mean to or close a window inadvertently and it's frustrating. So lemme get this straight: You can paste into the reply box the entire "day", highlight the text + ten IMG codes, hit submit reply, and it will submit just the highlighted portion? Rather than going back and forth this would be soooooo awesome! I think you have it right and we have it wrong. LOL!

My trip reporting methods? This year, my method is that I'm not gonna do one. At least not on here. Last year, I did a day by day trip report, just getting on my laptop from the hotel and posting the TR as I go so I don't have to sit down and do it all when I get home, which is how I did it the first time or two. But no matter how I did it, it was like hearing crickets chirping. One or two people would comment and that was about it, whereas you see other people's trip reports and they are pages and pages long as people comment on them. As another former wdwmagic poster and I were discussing, it is very cliqueish around here and if you aren't part of the wdwmagic "in crowd" then forget it. Apparently, I'm one of the ones who sits at the wdwmagic nerd table at lunch with one of those beanie caps with a propeller on top, because nobody seemed to care about my TR. So if I do one at all, I'll just post it day by day as a facebook note for people on my friends list to see. But I'm not gonna waste my time posting it on here when it is apparent that I'm not cool enough for anyone to bother to comment on it.

Oh now....I'd say 3/4 of the threads I've ever started outside of my TRs I get the chirping crickets too. And when I do reply to stuff I can't tell ya how many people are all conversing and my responses seem to go unseen even when (I think) I had something good to say or a different take on something. There's other sections of the forums here where I feel outside the loop and, admittedly, it can be frustrating. But ya know, I must be just that much of a "B" because I get this attitude of "screw-um" and I refuse to shut up. Then there's the holier-than-thou fanboys who will flame anyone for next to no reason at all and it just cracks me up. My favorite was when I posted a huge long post on the news board about us seeing a serious mishap at LMA while I was on the trip. I mean, here's something I took time to do ON the trip because it was that important to me. Then some jerk comes along on the thread and starts going on and on about how I didn't see what I said I did and I made it all up. It was like: :veryconfu ??? Why would anyone, particularly ME, do something like THAT??? I think that was the most perturbed I've ever been about anything on these boards. If I coulda smacked that person I promise you I would've. LOL!

Another thing is I can honestly say for myself that there are tons of threads I intend to respond to but don't because I get distracted. Recall that I have a very short memory and things cloud. I'm like Dory! Brilliant thought-->someone in the room asks me a question-->thought gone! It happens so fast! With trip reports in particular I often lay in bed late at night with my iPhone reading but don't reply because it takes forever for me to type out the simplest of posts on that little keyboard. I can't tell you how many times I've thought, "I'll reply to this thread tomorrow" then it's just like above: brilliant thought-distraction-thought gone. That quick. It's not intentional or personal. Honest. If I failed to respond on your report(s) I'd like to offer up my apologies. K? I'm prob'ly the last person I'd ever think of as "clique-ey". In high school kids thought I was anti-social because I was so anti-clique. Then I went to college in a small town and I can't tell you how many times I got asked "Who **is** that you're dating and **why**? He's a nobody. You can do better." I've never bought into that mode of thinking. I love people. Every person is a friend to me until there's a reason they aren't.

I'm glad you brought up the lack of response on a TR. Just as others in this thread have mentioned how much they enjoy responding to comments on their reports there's an opposite effect when you're the writer of a report with no response. It takes the happy out of it. I, for one, want to make a better effort to spread my kudos around and not forget so much. Even if it's a "thanks for sharing" or a simple little wave. Something just to acknowledge a person's efforts. I should stay off those annoying fanboy hormonal back-patting-party boards and put that time & effort into the part I love best about WDWMagic. So, sbkline, thank YOU for adding another perspective to the discussion by bringing up the opposite side of the report comment spectrum. Now THAT's what I call contributing to conversation!

And, if you take the time to write just ONE more report I personally vow to come hang out with you. I'll write it on a sticky note in PINK (since that's my favorite color) and staple it to my forehead. Puuurty please-nice-n-cheezy??? How can you resist the visual here???? :D

Sbkline, if you write another report I also promise to nag my brother (obrienIII) incessantly to read it and if he doesn't I'll do something really little-sister awful to him like cut holes in his sock toes. :D Okay well I would do that anyway just because it sounds like fun......

Sooooo....moving right along....

I had another interesting thought just now. That's why I'm posting it RIGHT NOW...because I'll forget what I was thinking and it'll be a couple days from now before I think it again and then it's a total crap-shoot if I'll post about it before I forget again.... LOL!

How interesting would it be to write a report as a self-assigned fictitious character perspective? I gotta think about how to say this.... If I were to write a report as a fictitious character who is telling the story. I could pretend that I'm Princess SweetPee and assign a fictitious character to each of my family members that suit their personalities. The report could be written in the style of a fairytale starting with "Once upon a time..." and end with "...and they lived happily ever after." Or, perhaps we could be a band of gypsies roaming the land o'Disney. There's tons of ways to write a report as a different kind of story. Pictures could be included. Stories from the actual adventure could be woven with the theme to pertain to the overall plot. I think at the very least it'd be a heckuva challenge to the report writer. No?

I am fairly new to these forums but have been writing trip reports for many years now on another discussion forum. I've made several fast friends through my reports and we talk at least two or three times a week. It's amazing how the love of Disney can bring so many people together.

For me, writing a trip report is my prescription for the post-Disney vacation blues. Without a trip report, I'd be hovering in a corner, with my thumb in my mouth and wishing for my happy place. :p Admittedly, that's a little extreme but I'm sure you get my drift.

I don't have any tried and true way of writing my trip reports. I don't usually take notes during our days in the parks but I make mental notes of things like how long it took the bus to come, wait times, etc. If I'm not too terribly exhausted when we get back to the resort, I'll jot the mental notes down in a notebook that I bring along. On some occasions, I take pictures of the wait times so that I can remember since my wee little brain often goes into overload while at Disney.

And, then, there are things that happen during our trips that you just can't forget.....like the time my front tooth (a crown) fell out in the middle of The Electric Umbrella and I had to chase it down.....or the time we got stuck in the cold section of Test Track and I had to tinkle so badly I thought I was going to go right then and there....oh and the time we were riding a surrey bike, flying down a hill and my shoe hit the pedal and flew over my head and the latest memory of us choking one another and earning fastpasses. Those are the memories that I certainly can't forget to include in my trip reports.

My trip reports are written by memory, the few notes that I make and, most importantly, the order in which my pictures were taken. Those pictures really help jog my memory. Oh and I type up an loose itinerary before we go on our trip to know what park we are doing on what day and where we are eating every evening. I refer to the itinerary when I write my reports as well.

For those of you who are reading my current trip report, you know that I am a bit, how do I say this? Wordy! Yep, I like to talk! A lot! And, I like to take pictures! A lot! :ROFLOL: I know when I read somebody's trip report, I want to know what they did, when they did it, how they got there, did they like it and so on and so forth. I guess that's why I provide so many details in my reports. I do, however, wish that the readers would post a little more on the various trip reports. I'd love to hear their feedback.

My trip reporting methods? This year, my method is that I'm not gonna do one. At least not on here. Last year, I did a day by day trip report, just getting on my laptop from the hotel and posting the TR as I go so I don't have to sit down and do it all when I get home, which is how I did it the first time or two.

You are not alone at the nerd table. I must be sittin' right there with ya because I have readers but nobody wants to talk to me. :ROFLOL: I have very few posters on my report....well, other than myself.

I have never considered your idea for day trips. Good stuff.
I have visited the areas of Florida in which you have lived, but I'm a South Floridian. I was in the Houston airport once on a flight switch as I traveled to Shreveport, so we are practically related. :)

Hey, Shreveport's in my neck of the woods. Just about 100 miles from where I live.

I've only done one report - for my and my husband's May 2009 honeymoon - and I wasn't very happy with it. This time around (in 3 sleeps! :sohappy:) I'm going to try the notebook suggestion and type the whole thing out in Word, mostly to catch spelling errors if nothing else.

I think my problem, which has been alluded to here, is that I know it's going to be WORDY...so I'm hoping to include a decent amount of pictures. But as you say Kelly, I'm sure people can just skim through if they so choose (and if they even read the thing!)

Thanks for the great ideas and trip reports everyone!

See! Yours is another report I started out with before I started posting my last one but then got caught up in posting the report and the holidays and keep forgetting to go back to. I've read a lot more since my last post on your report and meant to go back to comment but then forgot! Ugh! It's so frustrating to have this pea-brain especially when I realize my pea-brain is inadvertantly/indirectly making someone feel unappreciated or unloved. I HATE that! I'm a cold hard "B" about a lot of things but when it comes to being a comfort to everyone else in the world including perfect strangers I'm a big softy. I hate for people to feel alone or on the outside. Gotta make more time.

You know, now that I think about it, I think also when reports go up slowly over longer periods of time I get where I don't check for updates as frequently because after so many times of checking and it just being others commenting I sorta give up hope. LOL! Ain't that just saaaad?! That's why probably 90% of reports I start out reading on other Dis-ney forums I don't finish because I'm so impatient I can't wait 4 months to get to the end of the story. I really **am** pathetic. That's a serious confession.

Can't wait for that report!!!!

I wish I could post more frequently on my trip report but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do and do it when she can.;) In other words, I'm sneakin' in posts when the boss is busy or in court.:)

I hear ya. Logically I know folks have real lives but that insufferable little brat in me gets all impatient. I gotta make more time for this stuff! Lol!

What a fun thread idea! To be honest, WDWFigment's trip reports are the ones that got me started. Although I was hesitant to post my photo all over the forum as I am typically a very private person, I'm really happy to have a little time machine to take us back to our trip.

Being that I'm only going into my second trip report, I can say at this point I do it completely from memory and the order of photos. The photos really helped do the last one. It didn't help matters that Tim took photos of EVERYTHING. This time I think I will have to be more detailed being that I probably won't take photos of everything. We'll see what happens this time!

Excellent thread idea! We're leaving next weekend and I have been thinking about writing my first TR - I meant to do one for our trip last June (first one with our daughter), but life got in the way and I never got around to it...perhaps I'll try to go back and put one together. Someday our daughter will enjoy it, if nothing else!

Great idea about the notebook...a few times we've tried keeping a journal through the trip, but it was always a tedious task, especially at the end of a long day. I think I'll grab a little notebook to keep with me in the parks and see how that goes.

I look forward to posting my first TR when we get back in a few weeks...although now I'm nervous that it won't get read/commented on! :ROFLOL:

Just go with whatever comes out. If taking notes or pictures for the trip report affected our trips I wouldn't do trip reports at all. Few written details or lots of them doesn't matter. It's all good.

As I mentioned to Holly in a PM, I'm sort of nervous to write it...I want it to be good! Isn't that silly?? :hammer:This trip reporting is serious business!

Don't be nervous! Oh I hope this thread hasn't made people nervous! Seriously. If trip reporting wasn't fun I certainly wouldn't do it. I know in the past I've been a little nervous for various reasons. In the end, the reports are first & foremost for ME. As long as I remember that I'm okay. Write what's in your heart and there's no way it can be anything other than good. Right?

I understand how life gets in the way. It's 12:30 and I had all these aspirations to get so much done today...which hasn't even started happening. Dangit.

Maybe with the journal while you're touring try to force yourself to keep minimalist type notes. Like make a bullet, write the time, and use as many of the online acronyms as possible with only essential key words. I do that a lot. I swear if people saw my notes they'd think "What the heck is that?" Everything is super-messy. I'm writing fast and often while we're in motion. The notes are literally the shortest means to get my brain to remember. For instance, arriving at Epcot at 9:30 a.m. then getting Soarin' fastpasses, riding Soarin' standby, Test Track, Mission: Space, and Soarin' might look like the following but in really scribbly-scratched handwriting:

-EP @ 9:30
-got Soarin' FP, standby 15 mins
-TT
-M:S Orange
-FPd Soarin' @ 11:05

I just covered about 2 hours. It's that simple. Usually when pairing the abbreviated notes w/pictures from that day/time I can bring back the details so I can tell the story. If there's something noteworthy about something it's usually just scrawled out real short & sweet. Like for M:S I might jot down:

-M:S orange, boys chose assmnts, T little dizzy after & I feel sick. Fun tho.

My text for this might look like:

Next we took a spin on Mission:Space orange team. The boys love to choose who does what assignment on our mission. Tracey & I are officially getting old! Tracey was actually a little dizzy afterward which hasn't been a problem in the past. I felt pretty yucky and needed to take a break with a cool Sprite to sip on a little. Yep, break out the walkers and rocking chairs. LOL! It was worth it, though. We always have such a "blast"!

Overall, if it's an imposition on the trip I wouldn't do it. The most important part is the FUN! Right?! When juggling a little one I could totally see even keeping the simplest of notes 1 too many things to maintain. Even if you only post pics with a few notations, it's a report and everyone loves to see. Plus, do the report for you. You can send a link to your start page to friends & family to share. I do this with all my doll-collecting friends who aren't members here. They call me or email me or send me messages on the cabbage patch forum with their comments. You don't have to be a member here to see. Right? Plus, I've gotten several of my friends to join here and read up on stuff for their trips. It's been a total win/win.

I don't keep a journal or record any of my thoughts as we go, so if I forget what we did, I usually just make up something awesome (oh, don't play coy, you all really thought we met Michael Jackson, Elvis, and Christopher Walken during our December '10 trip!?) I used to take crappy photos for documentation purposes of the signage of each attraction we visited, as we visited, for this purpose, but since I no longer really recite attractions in order in the TRs, I no longer do this. So, I just go by memory.

Typical timeframes to put together a trip report are as follows:

**Picture editing: 2-4 hours (this ONLY includes the TR photos; photos taken from Flickr are another story all together); I edit in batches and have a lot of automated edits I apply to groups of photos. They don't look as good as they could this way, but it's much easier. The last step here, and it's such a critical one for saving time, is batch renaming all of the photos via Adobe Bridge.

**Text writing/typing: 15-30 hours. I use Google Docs for this. This may seem like a lot, but I don't think it's too bad. My TRs are long, but I write quickly and don't do any proofreading (sorry) to compensate for that.

**Photo upload to Photobucket: No clue, I usually let Photobucket do it's thing overnight. It takes me maybe 30 seconds to start the upload.

**Assembly for forum posting/posting: 2 hours. Once all of the images are uploaded, I grab the BBCode from one, and copy and paste that same code multiple times in the Google Doc. Then, I go back and edit the code as necessary. Since I did the batch edit, my photos end in a complete numerical sequence (i.e. first photo is [date]001.jpg, second is 002.jp, 003.jpg, etc.). I didn't used to do it this way, and it took so much longer. Anyone who has photo editing program capable of batch renaming should definitely do this.

**Responding to guest comments: No clue.

**Reading trip reports back with my family: Hours and hours. Then there's re-reads and the pauses to regain our composure. It's another reason I even post trip reports. We relive our adventures together which is completely awesome! (I know I just stole Kelly's sentiment here, but I agree.)

That's why I've been thinking writing semi-fictitious but somewhat-reality-based reports could be fun for the reader & the writer. I could be even more loose with notes and such then more creative, adding more fluff in the end product.

Report review/relive with the family is the best. It's one of the biggest perks!

Wait--you know I was kidding, right? I think you know, but I just want to make it clear. Don't want anything put-off from reading them because they think they're all farces.
