Things you hate Disney for doing

Okay, I keep reading the same things over and over, and the one thing that is getting to be irritating is this whole debate on Dino-Rama.

Now, do I like it? Heck no I don't like it. I think it is a blasted eye-sore in what is the most beautiful theme park in Orlando. I remember when you turned to the corner to head to Dino-land and just past the Olden Gate Bridge you saw trees. Now you see the tacky spin wheels of Primehivel (whatever) Whirl. I know the back story... I knew it when it first came in. But when I saw it first hand I realized that no amount of back story can be accepted for something that makes a corner of Animal Kingdom look like 'South of the Border'. There is no excuse for that. Disney should have higher standards than some cheap land filler with an off-the-shelve wild mouse coaster. If I wanted a wild mouse coaster I would go to a six flags and get the exact same experience. Disney is suppose to be better than that and with Dino-Rama, it wasn't. To the 'Purist' it comes off as an ineffective quick fix on an ailing park, and that is why so many of us don't like it. Animal Kingdom needed Everest or Australia... Shoot, give us the Excavator for crying out loud. Don't give us a midway and one of the cheapest to build coasters available.

And here is a whole in the back story... where in the world did Chester and Hester get the money for this venture? If I were them I would have started with a better store.

Okay, rant done.

:sohappy: :sohappy: GREAT post! i feel exactly the same way! but i couldn't have said it any better (or nearly as good, for that matter) than you! go, Kicker! woo!

Thanks Phreek, I was curious if I could put a tally in the 'Good Post' column.

Ahh.. the great Dino-Rama debate comes up again. Well, I for one think that Dino-Rama is an acceptable addition to the park for a few reasons. First of all, the area is extreemly nostalgic. All you have to do is go to the area with a baby boomer to see that. From what I'm guessing, most of the posters on this board are in their 20s or 30s and, therefore, would not be able to see this area in the way that those who experienced these types of carnivals and fairs in the 1950s and 60s do. While to younger guests it might seem like an array of carnival nonsence, to them it is as nostalgic as Main Street U.S.A. might have been to Walt Disney himself. They remember family roadtrips to kitschy tourist traps and the whole area brings back fond memories.

Another reason the area is sucessful in my mind is that it adds a fun new atraction to the park- namely Primevial Whirl. I know many complain about this attraction saying that it is meerly a dressed up carnival ride and, in all honesty, I wasn't expecting too much from it in terms of entertainment. Was I wrong! It's a fun, zippy ride that families can ride together on. The spinning cars really add to the ride and make it a unique experience in the parks. True it's not the most attractive thing Disney has ever built, but it does entertain guests and presents a fun new attraction to a park that just didn't have enough to suit many guests.

I do have to agree that Dino-Rama isn't the best planned area in WDW. It is much too claustrophobic and I would have] liked to have seen something a bit more creative than a Dumbo clone, but that aside, I find the kitscy roadside theming nice for the most part and Primevial Whirl adds a new attraction to my "must-see" list at the park. For me, at least, I would hardly call that a failure.

I was afraid to defend it so I'm glad you did!!! I don't mind it at all, I will agree that more could have been done but I don't hate it. It's kind of cute in it's own way but no very Disneyish but after reading a lot of posts with 5-15 things that people hate about Disney it's a wonder they still go!!!! Also, everytime I've been on that side of the Animal Kingdom, it's always crowded and I go off season. I agree it's not the best I've ever seen and it is a little non-disney but it's not the worst thing that could have happened!

Yeah, trees... & a tent full of carnival games.

the rumors of Discoveryland...yeah, they're just rumors, but they get me all worked up for potentially nothing.

They weren't just rumors, they were the plans that they were considering (which may or not happen).

What are some things on which you just absolutely hate Disney for doing so much you just feel like going and burning down Animal Kingdom or California Adventure:lol: ?

Just a sample of my large list-

1)Closing most of Future World at 6 or 7 pm. I don't see what's the point in that!

2)Not taking their time on building Animal Kingdom. It could be twenty times better if they hadn't rushed.

3)Taking out Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Everybody's favorite, pretty much no one hated it, and they have to take it out.

4)CLOSING ALIEN ENCOUNTER  . There's a free building called the Metropolis Science Center across from AE where Stitch could have been!

Yup!:p

After countless trip to Disney World over the last 20 years I have seen the openings, closures, rehabs, etc. Some of them I liked, some of them I didn't. I realize that change is inevitable, and due to my personal tastes, I am not going to like everything that Disney does.

That being said, however, there is one thing I have seen that just makes me ill to think about and I think would rip the heart out of any loyal Disneyite:

The erosion of the Disney standard.

If you remember, there was a time when the attention to the smallest detail was one of Disney's greatest selling points and really made the "Disney Experience" what it was.

For example, there was a time when the hitching posts on Main Street were stripped and painted EVERY NIGHT. In fact, if you pick up a "Pictorial Souvenir", circa early 80's, you would actually read that fact. Does this still continue today....obviously not.

Every land at the MK was meticulously designed and planned for the complete immersive experience. All of the architecture seamlessly blended together so that Adventureland blended into Fontierland, and even within the lands themselves; Adventureland goes seamlessly from African to Polynesian to Caribbean.

I could go on and on and on, but I think you get my point. I think everyone here has their own details they have noticed slipping away, and its the little things that make all the difference. This carefull attention to detail and the atmosphere it creates are things that are eroding fast and with it, the very things that made Disney........Disney.

Boy, i could go on and on with this topic!! hmm, where to start...
2) leaving 'Epcot' above SSE

15) failing to meet Walt's expectations of quality for his parks

100% Agreement here

Epcot must be in more trouble than we thought. It's a well know (and not successful) corporate strategy that when a company is way down doo-doo creek with no paddle that they re-brand.

Either that or there is a new numpty in Disney Management who wants to “Make their mark”.

OR - it's an unfounded rumor

well, to me that makes them rumors...because they weren't officially announced. at least that i know of. to me it sounded like ideas that they were throwing around, and maybe even seriously considering. but they never made the press release that said 'this is what we're doing'. so, to me, that's rumor.

The word "rumor" does not apply to something that was being considered.

Announcements will come. All of these things being tossed around for Epcot are in preparation for it's 25 anniversary in 2007. And yes, it is a rebranding. Due to the rapidly changing technology of the last 25 years, Future World has become Right Now world.
The greatest advancements in technology today are taking place in areas that have little or no effect on the average consumer and this will remain so for some time to come. Its hard to base an park on things that cannot be turned into tangible and meaningful experiences.

Dislike

One thing i dislike about disney is replacing all the good mechandise with pooh stuff. I don't want to stir things up but in my Disney Store they should rename it, The Pooh Store. You have to be really lucky to find something in there not covered in Pooh or his friends anymore.

Yep that's right. It's either Pooh, Princess or Toy Story. That's the line they are trying to push and THINK that everyone likes. It will continue for a long time too.

There's a few things I wouldn't say I hate or dislike...just a few things that could have been done better or different .

1. Dinorama- I agree that the games aren't like Walt would have wanted, though they fit the mold/theme here. I think they should be cheaper if anything...we already pay enough for tickets food n drinks there.

2. Closing Alien Encounter- I know they're gonna put a good Stitch ride in place of it, but AE was a great attraction and I think they could have put Stitch somewhere else.

3. Mr. Toads- It should have stayed in the park, even if it was moved (even to MGM or somewhere). It was such a clssic ride and it had a lot of memories for its riders.

4. The decline of Walt's dreams- I know people are gonna take this either the right or wrong way, but hear me out....

Walt had standards when he opened DL, and when he was working on WDW before his death. These are things such as cleanliness, Cast Member looks/attitudes, attraction upkeep and originality, etc. For many years, they were kept up, yet in the past few years, most likey due to cost cutting objectives, these have slowly began crumbling. I am not saying it is one persons fault, I think it is the changing of the company heads, as well as the economy. I also think things, no matter how expensive, should be kept at 100%, not 99% or 98% and to Walt's ways. Times have changed and so has the company, but Walt's ideas are always going to be logical for the best Disney can be, and I think Eisner and his "people" should reopen Walt's notes and study them....these guys are getting a little rusty on Walt's ideas and objectives......

5. Id also like to add that they need to rebring CTX instead of Dinosaur....that was a very dumb mistake on their behalf....

Closing Journey Into Imagination and moving Image Works downstairs.
Taking out Mr. Toad.
Dinorama and Paradise Pier at DCA is just an example of how the company's been ing on Walt's vision.
Horizons being taken out.
