As long as Orange County is in the Orange or Yellow Tier when hockey season starts, I’ll be good. I’m guessing the Kings, Lakers, and Clippers will move their games to Honda Center if they want fans attending.

Response from CAPA -

"Erin Guerrero, executive director of the California Attractions and Parks Association, issued the following statement after the plan was unveiled.

To say today’s announcement on theme parks is disappointing would be a grave understatement. The Governor has not used science or data to inform his decision. Theme parks have opened and operated safely around the world for months. Data and science prove that theme parks can operate responsibly anywhere – there is no rational reason to believe they can’t do so in California. No one cares more about park employee and guest safety than the parks themselves. “Let me be unequivocal– the guidance issued by the Newsom Administration will keep theme parks shuttered for the foreseeable future. By forcing amusement parks to stay closed until their home county reaches Tier 4, the Governor has issued a “Keep Theme Parks Closed Indefinitely” Plan which will devastate California’s major theme park industry."

That's exactly right. This plan basically keeps all major theme parks closed in California indefinitely.

It's apparent that Governor Newsom wants California's theme parks out of business and the industry removed from the state. Like banning gasoline powered cars in California, but Newsom doesn't have to wait a decade for that he can just do it immediately while the parks have already been closed for the past seven months. Why is that? What's the beef there?

My only guess is that like gas cars, Newsom views theme parks as inherently wasteful and a silly vestige of the 20th century that doesn't belong here any more.

Can anyone think of some other reason? I can't, but I'm open to suggestions.

No it is so obvious he despises theme parks, live entertainment, and basically anything that brings people joy. I feel so sorry for the people of California.

Small amusement parks are hosed too. Let's not forget that, even if their county get to the Orange Tier.

Say you run the Santa Cruz Boardwalk up in Nor Cal, or charming Castle Park out in Riverside. You have to do the following to reopen:
  • Wait until your county reaches the Orange Tier to reopen.
  • Limit the people allowed in your park to only 500 people at one time in the entire park.
  • Only operate outdoor attractions. (No dark rides, haunted houses, etc.)
  • Only allow people who can prove they live in your county to enter the park.
That's basically not a business plan for any park larger than Adventure City in Stanton. 500 people max capacity in the park?!? Only locals allowed to buy a ticket?!? It's economic suicide.

Something is going on here, gang. Governor Newsom does not want small amusement parks or big theme parks operating any longer in California. Why? o_O

Have they been making too much money and not being taxed enough by the state? It's more than likely it comes down to money. I'm thinking parks have just been enjoying too much of it and the state of California has had enough. They want control of theme parks, more money.

Is that why he exempted them from the initial restrictions?

Let's not forget, he exempted Disneyland for about 72 hours during that second crazy week in March. The stores had been emptied of paper products, bottled water, meat, dairy and canned goods. People were panic buying anything and everything. Fights were breaking out at Costco and Target.

The story was moving very fast, and the response had changed 180 degrees from big city mayors and Nancy Pelosi who were telling us in early March to go out and enjoy life to a message of panic and shutdown less than 10 days later.

There was no methodical or planned messaging coming from any politician of any stripe, Republican, Democrat or Socialist during the second week of March. It was just pure panic and rushed communication. It took several weeks into late March for messaging and information from elected officials to gel and become coherent.

I would not use the fact that Governor Newsom exempted Disneyland from shutting down on March 9th as an example of anything except governmental unpreparedness for a pandemic.

He’s probably just thinking the correct course is to let it all burn down and then rebuild with superhigh taxes on the rich. That’s the solution to everything, right?

Do you expect Disney to sue the state? And if they would, would it be before or after the election.

I would have to imagine after the election. I think Disney suing the State of CA would provide ammunition for the right in the last 2 weeks before election day.

Even for your local Boomers, Golf N Stuff, or Ferris wheel on a pier in Newport or Santa Monica, how are they going to limit sales to 500 people and limit by county residences? Most of these small parks don’t have operational abilities to sell tickets in advance. All they can do is eyeball it (I.e. honor system for capacity, checking IDs, etc.).

This guidance is unworkable and while I continue to support zip code limits for larger parks some of the actions from the state of California are downright reckless, too. No one is coming from out of state to visit a mini golf/family fun center.

I'm guessing you've never been to Gilroy Gardens, 500 people is a crowded day.
