The Spirited Sixth Sense ...

I'm NOT a sports fan
This whole conversation makes a lot more sense now;).

Anyone who is a sports fan knows that ESPN is still a premier product and ridiculous attempts to compete like OLN/VS/NBC Sports are just that...ridiculous. ESPN does show some niche market sports too, but we are talking about major conference college football (including playoffs next year) and many other mainstream sports that big fans cannot live without. I can get the weather online or from my local news. Comparing ESPN to the weather channel is like comparing Universal to a neighborhood playground...comparing apples to an 800 pound gorilla.

I am a huge sports fan and I most likely would have switched away from Comcast a while ago if they didn't have a strangle hold on my local Philly sports. But if Comcast told me tomorrow they were dropping ESPN for good I would drop them...and so would every bar or restaurant with a bar in the viewing area. You are grossly underestimating the appeal of ESPN.

The irony: DCL is a perfect example of "blue ocean" theory. They all but reinvented the cruise ship experience, opening cruising up to a new market--primarily families with children--who were far less likely to sail before. Their biggest competitors have been forced to play catch-up and go down the path Disney led.

I do suppose you are correct about that. Nicely noted. The other differentiating factor is no dang casinos
on the ships. That is what sold me on the idea of a Disney Cruise.

And what would you replace it with - a competitive offering in most markets there is no alternative so you would give up all video media access because ESPN was unavailable I don't believe most would do that a hard core ESPN fan might but I don't think there are that many hardcore ESPN fans around.

I may be wrong on that but as long as fans can see most of the big games I don't think the average fan cares whether its ESPN or Fox/Comcast bringing them the game.

I DO expect some epic battles over content though! I will bring the popcorn to the upcoming corporate wars

Which is rather ironic given that the original F-18 Hornet was intended as the lower cost alternative to the F-14. I'm hardly an expert, but this whole idea of one aircraft for the AF, Navy, and Marines is a boondoggle which appears to be more a jobs and political favor program than a defense program. We'd be better off starting from scratch with a new design.

Yes we would, Also demerging the aircraft companies so we actually have a competitive market instead of the Lockheed / Boeing duopoly

OK, it's always a good day at the Olympics when the USA beats the Russians on the ice. Always.

But I have no clue what you kids are talking about ... are we talking about defense systems and planes? Comcast taking over the world? The importance of ESPN? If you want a general chit chat thread where we can discuss anything/everything, I believe one exists (I don't know because I wouldn't go there).

And if you're going to turn this into such a popular place here, the least you could do is like it on FB, so that it spreads, which makes the site look a whole lot better -- and does very little for me.

Oh, and for those wetting themselves over the return of House of Cards, I watched the first five hours of it and thought the writing was incredibly uneven and that it didn't hit any groove until the fourth episode. No, I wasn't all that shocked by what happened in the first episode. That character wasn't as important as people may have thought.

Oh well, much to catch up on here, but gots things to do ... starting with a visit to the local Starbucks (boy, do I miss all the great local coffee houses in Germany!)

And to keep this remotely about WDW ... hey, I got my Mickey Monitor in today's mail ... and it has Kermit and Miss Piggy (YEAH!!!) on the cover!

Right now ESPN is too big to take on like that, but in 5 years...I wouldn't be so sure. FOX is making a big push, and in '16/17 will likely up the stakes, as I'd expect them to make a push for exclusivity for B1G and PAC12 football rights (split with the respective conference channels, of course, which they also have a stake in), and quite frankly, I'd be more than happy to see that happen, as I detest the product that ESPN is pushing along with their crappy "embrace debate" crap that has permeated every single show and is even spilling over into their broadcasts as well. I only watch live sports on ESPN as it is, and even then the announcing teams are sometimes so terrible I mute the TV and turn on the local radio stream for a game. By the way, Shapiro's big blunder while he was at ESPN was giving Jim Delany an insultingly low offer for broadcasting rights and pushing him to create the BTN, which is proving to be very successful and is the driving force behind all the other conference channels springing up. That has hurt ESPN, and if FOX wants it bad enough, could really hurt ESPN with the B1G/BTN pushing into the northeast corridor's gigantic viewership numbers starting this fall.

EDIT: But yes, Dave is right above, I expect to start hearing some things about nastiness at the bargaining table should the merger go through. I wonder how strong Disney believes in its pricing on the auxiliary channels outside of ESPN and the Disney Channel?

BTW, first two episodes of House of Cards are great. They return hitting the ground running...

Just went grocery shopping for snacks and dinner. There is gonna be a marathon HoC at my house tonight.

You can come over if you'd like! There will be punch and pie. And by punch I mean lots of wine and by pie I mean peanut butter cookies.

They really need to spread out the delivery of the episodes. Just started e10, have accomplished nothing of consequence all weekend.

WHY does the Cruise Line still understand and practice the 'Disney Difference', but
the parks in Fla. don't get it? Just different management? Can they not charge
enough at the parks, but they can on the ships, to justify it? Why do people get
off the ships and say 'that's the way you do that', and it doesn't apply to the parks?
In spite of the fact that so many are willing just jump on this as a deliberate, evil money grubbing happening instrumented by deliberate, evil money grubbing executives, I think the reason is much, much simpler.

A ship is a very condensed, confined and close space where all the entertainment, transportation, lodging and dining are in the same place. Managing that type of close knit setup is monumentally easier then one that is spread out over 27,000 acres (or whatever it is now). One on one supervision exists and employees cannot get away at night and are, in many cases, depending on the quality of their performance to supplement their incomes via tips. That translates to the "Cast Member" no matter what their level and because of that, your service level is naturally going to be better.
