Of course anybody who went to Olive Garden or red lobster for quality Italian or seafood… That's just a problem right there.
Red Lobter closed around here years ago because our local seafood places are so much better, but we still have Olive Gardens. I'm not sure why , but they seem to do a thriving business. Makes no sense to me since we have arguably the best Italian food in the country right here in RI.

They are building an Olive Garden at my local mall as we speak. They must be doing alright if they are still building locations. This is the same mall where the Disney store it had closed down last year.

The best restaurants are never chains. I don't even think some of the restaurants owned by celebrity chefs are that good. My favorite places to eat are small local restaurants that have an owner and chef who take pride in their food. In fact I have seen some wonderful place fail after getting great reviews because they are not able to handle the huge increase in business. I grew up and live at the Jersey shore and we have some wonderful local restaurants that serve the freshest seafood.

I actually prefer Ker's Wing House to Hooters ever since I found the place a few years ago while visiting WDW... I used to go to Hooters all the time... Not any more...

Recently I've discovered that my favorite wings are served at BBQ restaurants. Many have their own style and most will do a combo of smoking + flash frying. Just fantastic with the deeper flavor.

In fact.... I think this helped determine my lunch for today.

True, but I remember when Olive Garden had decent quality for the price.

I'll give Disney credit for improving quick service food variety over the last few years. Some places, like AoA food court and Epcot WS, have better quick service than ever before. Ironically, the sit-down restaurants have been going downhill while QS has gotten better.

Clearly you missed what's going on with the parent company and a group of rogue investors…

You'll have to Google it and it's likely what you're describing is merely a symptom of the larger problem.

Cliff Notes version?
Investors come in, demand management changes so they can get a quick return on their investment, everything starts going downhill. Investors cash out and Company left in ruins.

Seafood and Italian chains are keeping their distance from my area. Closest are almost 30 minutes away. Certain areas just know how to make certain things better. The national standard of chains just does not compare to certain areas' local standards.

That's all well and good when you have better options available. But many mom and pop places are crap and don't have certain chain-wide standards they need to maintain. In my community, there are only a few mom and pop places I will dine at. (Had a great cheesesteak at one today! Don't let @PhotoDave219 see this post, please!)

Yeah, I wasn't trying to be elitist about it. I live in an area where there are not much choice besides chains. And pretty much eat at the same 3 local restaurants all the time. I miss where i lived in Virginia where we had alot of local restaurants with good food and low prices. Man, i miss the Mekong Vietnamese restaurant. But I know in a lot of parts of Florida the only local restaurants you will find are Pizza and breakfast places. But I do agree with many people that it is the economy and all the specialty fast food places like Chipolte, Five Guys, etc who use fresh ingredients and offer more bang for your buck that are killing these chains. However, I do like the Lobster Pizza and those cheese biscuits at Red Lobster. ;)

I think those biscuits are what is keeping them in business. I have to say though I think my favorite chain is carabbas. I never eat pasta there. They have some of the best steak and grilled chicken you'll find outside of a good steak restaurant. The wood grill is what keeps me coming back.

What were the issues? Did you bring them to management's attention?

The check in issue was an understaffed counter with a very long line with no additional staff brought up to help. This resulted in a harried staff and cranky customers so the experience was less than ideal. The fitness center issue affected my daughter and her friend who didn't know they had to be 18 and that there was a fee to use the facility. They said the employee was rude about this and they felt belittled in front of other customers. But they are 16 so, so take that for what it's worth . The pool side issue involved really poor service from a waitress. I always tip wait staff even when the service is sub par, but I wouldn't have this time if the gratuity wasn't included in the tab.

I didn't bring any of this to management's attention because I typically don't with a first time bad experience. I try to give the benefit of the doubt and assume it's a one off issue or just a bad day for the employee. If it had involved the same issue or employee twice, I would have. Overall it was a nice resort and seemed well maintained, so I'll just let this one go. We only go to Orlando every 2 to 3 years, so if it works out I'll probably give them another try just for comparison.

As I said before, perhaps the great reviews had my expectations too high. I experienced similar feelings at the UNI parks at times, finding faults that I would overlook elsewhere because my expectations from all the rave reviews were that the place was nearly perfect. It was really good, but it had it's share of dirty bathrooms (more than it's share, actually), sticky tables, and less than great Team Members.

As an side, we were in Orlando for 12 days. We had a condo at Wyndham Bonnet Creek that was a gift from family and also spent a night at Beach Club to take advantage of a PIN that had a great room discount and provided free park hoppers for our 8 day passes. Beach Club had the best service (best I've had there in 4 stays) of the three and Wyndham the worst. But I don't complain about free so I'll not bring any of that stuff up.

(but he is quite right about Marrakesh being a fine restaurant ... it is still a gem of EPCOT dining and, yes, most people ... most American people are afraid to dine there)

I love Moroccan food, and Marrakesh is okay. But it doesn't hold a candle to Imperial Fez in Atlanta. Since the Fez is way closer to me than Orlando, I usually skip Marrakesh at Disney. Sadly, Imperial Fez never did really recover from the recession. The food is still fantastic, but every night used to be like one huge party. The past few times I've been, it was just us and a few other quiet couples. It just isn't the same.

I like the Imperial Fez, but honestly the only way I ever go there is with a Groupon lol. The food is good and the atmosphere is unique, but I can't see paying full price for it. I guess that supports your statement that the recession hurt them.

It was always a special occasion type of place for me, certainly not something I did just on a whim. But considering you're talking about a chef-created, six-course dinner with entertainment, I always felt like the prices were reasonable for what it was. I believe they've now changed the menu to offer options for a la carte entrees or fewer courses. But it's been a while since I was there.

My favorite chain is Chuy's. I could drink their salsa and jalapeno ranch dip, and I normally hate anything with a ranch flavor.
