I just really hope Iger smacks us down(by proving us wrong) during this budget season,

Hoping he pushes all cylinders before going out and invest big time in the parks. So he can go out with head high to both Wall Street and the fans.. (just to mock Eisner lol)

Yeah that's unlikely to happen.

You know if Universal doesn't crush WDW this year in attendance increases both in percentage and actual numbers some people here are going to look like the fools they are. In any case both universal parks will be ranked 5th and 6th in Orlando in 2014 count on it. See you at WDW home of the 4 highest attended theme parks in Orlando.

We are planning to go to Universal in August. My youngest is a HP fan, and adores dressing in costumes and role-playing. I already know I will be springing for one of the interactive wands, and likely a robe and other items in Hogwarts house colors. (And yes, they will get worn after we get home, too.) We have already been discussing which flavors of ice cream we want to try. The kids have only the vaguest idea of the Gringotts ride; they are primarily looking forward to immersing themselves in the environment they've seen in the movies.

I think that's a big part of the reason folks spend so much at Potter. The merch may not be Sideshow Prop Replica material for the most part (or even all of the part, LOL) - but it's largely stuff that kids can actually play with and enjoy and keep using for a long time.

There is actually very little quality stuff for kids to buy these days at WDW aside from stuffed animals and T-shirts - and even they aren't as plentiful as they once were. Just about everything else is aimed at certain segments - scrapbook moms, golfing dads, adult collectors (all that blind box lottery junk, sculptures, etc. - even the monorail sets are largely purchased by adults). Anything else is really disposable junk that probably won't make it until they get home, let alone be cherished over time.

With Potter, folks don't mind dropping $100-150 a head on the kids to get them a cloak and wand or other cool stuff - because it's decent quality, unique stuff that actually could last them long after they are done playing with them as souvenirs. I have no doubt that in 15 years many of those kids who have those wands today will have them on their desks in college, or in their first apartment.

It's just indicative of the current mindset at Disney - cheap disposable stuff that is overpriced on top of it, that has little lasting value.

Two things: one, I was a state debate champion, so I know exactly how to frame an argument properly for a given audience. Two, having been bullied as a child and by everyone from co-workers to police officers to Disney execs as an adult, I do NOT appreciate being labeled as such. I hate bullies. I am no bully. ... But I have a very low tolerance for fools and ignorance.

I think the common phrase is, "You don't suffer fools gladly." Essentially, you don't go out of your way to find them, but if they are going to insist themselves be known, you will point it out. I've been accused of the same before - if you want to sit there and look like an idiot, I'm not going to say anything, but if you are going to jump up and down in front of me saying "Look at me look at me I'm an idiot!" - well, expect to hear about it. ;)

I used to be die hard but I figured out that universal is doing now, what I fell in love with disney for. They are just utilizing the strategy that I want, meaning more attractions and less fluff.

I think you just told the story of nearly everyone here. /cheers

If you don't like O-Town, then why visit WDW? You could visit DLR...

That's what I have been doing. A trip to So Cal is about the same at this point as WDW, (it used to be much more expensive), I do have to fly which I prefer not to, but it's a small price to pay. I fly into SNA, get a car, one of the many cheap clean rooms in Anaheim (hey, if anyone is ever looking for a real bargain, I ended up having to stay last minute at the Motel 6 a few blocks from Disneyland, which was newly renovated - and it's one of the cleanest, friendliest places I have ever stayed at and a steal for fifty bucks a night).

Part of the reason Orlando has gotten more expensive is I no longer keep an AP. I live about 1200 miles away and I had one pretty much from 2004-2011. I always got down at least twice a year to make it worth it - one year I used it for like 33 days total because I could drive down in less than a day, get a cheap hotel, and have a week at Disney for $500.

Since things have been so stagnant, though, and the AP prices skyrocketing, I just couldn't justify the expense anymore. So I went from 2-6 trips a year to 0, and started checking out the other coast. I still spend the bulk of my time at Disneyland, but there are millions of other things to explore as well. You can easily fill a whole day going to movie/TV locations for fun (my favorite is Buffy's house, and the fact the street number is 1313 LOL, and that the high school is around the corner).

To be fair, though, I have to say that @PhotoDave219's Diagon Alley review was one of the most insightful and exciting posts I've read in a while.

Where is this gem located? Love to take a look.

I started this one. I get to call out lifestylers for not crediting where they heard it, right?

Shall we start the countdown on who's going to pick it up and run with it? In the old days, we'd have a Jim Hill "article" by Monday, but my guess is Yee or Niles.

Universal is not their enemy. What's the quote? We have seen the enemy...and he is us. Disney needs to see the real enemy. Being petty makes them look like a 16 year old girl in a catfight (no offense to 16 year old girls). They can truly fight by living up to the standards they set an creating immersive attractions.

Yeah, I could have worded that better. It's not that I want them to be petty, it's that I want them to be competitive, and was taking this as a positive sign that they at least give a crap, LOL.

MGM was a beautiful park from opening day (yes, I was there!) to the late 90s. It has since become a total mess. When filming largely stopped, they started opening backstage areas up and making them part of the theme park in a very haphazard way. They've never had a master plan (only WDW park that didn't) for expansion, so things like cast parking were constantly relocated. I can't look at the animation studio (knowing what was created and some of the talent that toiled there) and see it used as exec office space and call cubicles and not want to shed a few tears. And then there is the giant hat ...

I didn't even mention Sid's because if I did I start flinging the 'f word' around. (no, not flatulent!):devilish:

I still can't acknowledge that Sid's is...what it is now. I now understand the pain the Adventurers Club folks felt, and I apologize for ever belittling their cause.

Funny thing on the topic of MGM beauty - some Disney blog (can't tell you which one, I read it on my iPad earlier and can't recall - I am sure someone knows) posted about a new product Disney is releasing, some pre-fab Photo CD of things all around WDW. 600 photos in all, I believe. For folks to use in scrapbooks, etc. There are some samples. A bunch of them are from Parades and such (I guess folks want pics of a parade they weren't at?), etc.

However, one that leaped out of me was of a bunch of characters including Mickey standing in front of GMR. I'm pretty sure from the angle and the feel, that that picture was taken before the BUH. I would almost swear it's from the 90's.

While I would love to say "oooh maybe that means the BUH is coming down!" - but we've been fooled like that before. What it really made me think was "gee, its' pretty bad when even Disney puts out pics of before it was there as ideal vacation photos".

Nor is "average guest spending" anything to do with admission. ;)

Yeah, because attendance is what I was referring to. But, monorail on!

We'll be looking for you going "wheeeee!" as you get your "airtime" on 7DMT, and we'll bring some charts with funny little pictures so we can try again to help you understand the concept of dollars spent per guest.

A theme park that makes is guests spend an average of $180 a day is ripping it's customers off compared to a park that makes them spend. $120 a day. In fact I think Disney is ripping off their customers in California more than Universal is in Florida with their $150.00 two park one day ticket. Neither company should charge that much. The highest should be $100.00 a day with park hoppjng. Anything more is too much. Let them both offer after hour parties if they want more money.

I'm pretty sure the The 120 a day and 180 a day figures...could be figures related of people expending, not park entrance.

Let's say its 180$ a day PLUS park tickets (the 180 is food, gifts and extras).
vs 120$ a day PLUS park tickets.

The huge inflated prices of Disney hotels can take a toll on the expending of the visitors (in merchandise and food).. along other things of course (like bad quality and generic merchandise).

I never said anything about FORCING them to pay. I said average guest spending...that means park admission and things people WANT to buy...food and merchandise.

whoops, was right! :O

Now, now....

That depends on who the said Imagineer is that is giving the hugs.

get a room you two ;)
jk
It's not making them spend it like a ticket price.. the point is what the guests spend.. including food/souvies/add-ons/etc. The company can't 'make' the guest spend more than they are willing to or have. But hey, predisposition is in your counters your forte...

I was thinking the same thing, too much pointing and dodge the real meaning of your posts.

This is not being talked about nearly enough. And no one at WDC even gave half a second's consideration to what the blow back so such a stunt could be.

Say goodbye to Christmas Parade TV taping folks!
You think universal will try to shot back and block Disney's Christmas special?
Wouldn't it blow back at Universal ? Ie, disney making a huge noise and claiming Universal is to blame for their pretty purdy parade being blocked?

It's an entirely different situation, as it's a special specifically about the WDW parade. The only reason Disney could have a tinkle over the Tonight Show is because it's a talk show that is otherwise unrelated to theme parks.

In any case, it's not like they are political candidates or anything, and there really would have likely been no wrongdoing found if the FCC did investigate, it was just a ing contest.

M&g stands for "meet and greet" its a ploy to get people to line up for hours with no real pay off and it gives Disney an excuse to not build real attractions. ;)

And no ride... the TDO way!! I'm ready for my Olaf bathrooms... why aren't you running?

dammit!!, you guys beat me both on the jokes related to M&G and bathrooms ;)
