You wanted backstory get ready for the longest post on wdwmagic comments (maybe).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once upon a time, there was a little company named sega. They had a little mascot named sonic. It was sonic's anniversary and it was the time to make a brand new game for him.
The idea: bring sonic into the real world.
You see, at the time, video game graphics finally looking "realistic" was a big deal, so it made sense to have the next sonic game take place in the real world. It wasn't the first time sonic games copied art styles either, as sonic heroes has the same artstyle as many other games at the time, such as mario kart double dash. Plus sonic games have had humans before, so it wouldn't be too out of place.
The name: Sonic the hedghog, signaling the start of a new generation. Not a reboot as many believe.
Problem 1
The game was originally meant to be for playstation 3, wii, PC, and xbox 360. The wii version caused the team to be cut in a sizeable chunk and was the first reason why the game became bad. The wii version eventually became Sonic and the Secret Rings
Problem 2
The game had many features and levels, it was going to be a very large game. Day/night cycles, levels themed to forests, deserts, snowy landscapes, super sonic, multiple endings. But stuff like this caused the game to become too large.
Problem 3A
Now this is a problem I'm not sure if it's just or rumor or legit. Thus, 3A. The problem is Elise. See, she wasn't created for this game. She was going to be a main character or the main character of a separate game all together. When her game was cancelled, sega or sonic team liked her so much she was put in sonic 06. Thus including a character that did not fit the rest of the world or story.
Problem 3B
In 2006, the game was shown at e3. The game seen at e3 was more polished than the released version (more on that later), but had some glaring issues. The script was not finished and there was placeholder audio for Elise. Jumping will get sonic killed. Sonic will stick to things. The game was more confusing than fun.
Problem 4
The final game engine shown at e3 had big problems that caused the creators to have to go back to an older engine. This is why the final release is worse than what was shown at e3. The e3 build had problems crashing multiple times.
Problem 5A
Now the big reason why the game released rushed is because of a deal between sega and microsoft. The game had to be released holiday 2006, or else.
Problem 5B
The other big problem with the game was it was sonic team's first time working with new hardware, so it would have still been flawed, even if completed.
