TheOriginalTiki Presents:
Ratatopia: Bridging Together Disney's Animal Universe
For this project, I was forced by fellow Know-It-All
@IDInstitute to design a mini-land based on the Disney/Pixar modern classic "Ratatouille". Normally this would be a fun prospect, but the big hitch is the fact that the land has to be within Adventureland. Obviously with Ratatouille being set in Paris, this presented some problems.
The saving grace of my brainstorming process was the recently released smash hit "Zootopia", which is bound to go down as another modern classic in the same vein as Frozen and Tangled. The unique thing about Zootopia is that it brings all of Disney's sensibilities about antrophamorphic animals together into one movie. This is where the inspiration for Ratatopia comes into play. Join me, shall you? As I present one of the most unique lands in Disney history that ties together Disney's entire Animal Kingdom!
Backstory:
Shipwrecked! Linguini and Collette have become world famous chefs after opening La Ratatouille and their hole in the wall cafe becoming the most well reviewed restaurant in all of Paris. On an excursion to New York City to participate in an international culinary festival, Linguini and Collette are stranded on the shores of an unknown jungle of Africa.
Joining the two on their trip is Remmy and his entire rat family. Also stowed away on board is Skinner who is plotting revenge. Anton Ego also joined the couple to participate as a head judge in the festival's main competition. All bets are off now as the characters all band together for survival.
What they find is a treehouse that seems to have been fashioned out of another shipwreck. This treehouse belonged to the parents of Tarzan, king of the jungle..Who may or may not be the brother of Ana and Elsa
This is the basis for Ratatopia's overall story. Disney LOVES shared universes. They created the style with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there's a whole galaxy worth of crossover stories they could explore with the Star Wars saga. This land will be a stepping stone in joining together their current animated films into one cohesive shared world.
Disney parks have always been known for having small details that tie lands together. Ratatopia will be a shining example of this. Located in the depths of Adventureland's jungles will be a brand new mini-land brimming with imagination.
Have a dining adventure at Remmy and Linguini's new restaurant that blends the flavors of Paris and Africa. Climb through a rat's perspective of "Little Paris" in a play area that connects to Zootopia. Hold on tight on a rat trap themed spinning wild mouse designed by Skinner. Marvel at an E Ticket that ties Ratatouille, Zootopia, Robin Hood, The Lion King, and other famous Disney animals together in a trackless, three story dark ride that's one of the most ambitious in Imagineering history.
General Layout
Ratatopia is arranged like a courtyard. The waterways around the treehouse will be rerouted, and the E ticket dark ride will be constructed in a show building behind the birm. To tie the backstory together, the Swiss Family Treehouse will become Tarzan's Treehouse and will serve as a larger and more elaborate version of Disneyland's counterpoint. Several relics of Swiss Family will remain such as the functioning water well system and the Swiss Polka serving as part of the music loop.
The treehouse serves as an entry point to Ratatopia. Large palm and bamboo trees loom over us as we make our way into the courtyard. Our eyes are drawn to the Eiffel tower on the left, but as we get closer we can see it's a recreation made entirely out of toothpicks!
The double decker "Antropha-Merry-Go-Round" will be housed in a large bamboo structure in the center of the courtyard. Off to the right will be an African division of the Gusteau's franchise which is having its grand opening. Gusteau's serves as the entry point for the main dark ride.
Along the back corner of the courtyard will be Skinner's Rat Trap, a spinning wild mouse family coaster. On the left will be "Little France", a children's play area from a rat's point of view.
Near Little France is the area's main shopping and dining. La Ratatouille: A Taste of the Jungle offers a thrilling culinary blend. Colette's Boutique is the place to stock up on the latest fashions. Finally, a gift shop connected to Gusteau's offers all the items needed to stock the kitchen, along with a cavalcade of Ratatouille and Zootopia themed merchandise. Because Anyone Can Cook!
Ratatouille: Adventures Beyond the Kitchen
The five star signature sign of Gusteau's shines brightly above the courtyard. Sharp eyed guests can also notice the famed chef giving winks and nods every so often as they pass by. This is the entrance to one of most exciting dark rides ever created. Guests pass outside in the gardens and fountains of the overflow queue before making their way inside.
The waiting room serves as the Fastpass transitioning point. The queue then winds through three main dining rooms before entering the kitchen. The kitchen features a large scale forced perspective trick that makes everything gradually get larger and larger as we reach the "sink" which actually serves as the main loading platform. By the time were there, blocks of knifes and stacks of vegetables are larger than life and we have truly transitioned to the perspective of a rat.
The trackless vehicles will be virtually identical to the ones used in the Ratatouille dark ride in Disneyland Paris.
Heading down the drain of the kitchen sink, we are immediately swept away into the sewer system where Crush tells us to "Grab Shell!" as we cascade down the waterways of Ratatopia and out into the surrounding jungles!
At this point it's worth noting that the attraction will use a combination of screens, projections, and physical sets/AAs.
We see Sabour the leopard spring down and attack us as Tarzan also swoops in and engages in a fight. Following a heard of migrating gorillas from Tarzan, we see the ruins of King Louie's Palace in the distance. Entering the ruins we are treated to a large show room where the vehicles come together and spin around a stage as a high tech AA of King Louie sings the classic "I Wanna Be Like You".
We hear a loud bang in the distance, and suddenly the wildebeasts from The Lion King come stampeding through the temples as we are treated to a wild scene of all the monkeys and gorillas scurrying around.
The elephant brigade from Jungle Book meets up on the outskirts of Lion King's elephant graveyard with Pride Rock in the distance. A group of rats watches on as Simba consults the council over the different realms of the Disney animal kingdom coming together.
We hear horns off in the distance and transition into a medevil array of tents where the tournament from Robin Hood is taking place. Several famous Disney animals join in along with the familiar Robin Hood characters, including Baloo, Timon and Pumba, and the dancing hippo from Dance of the Hours.
The tournament is interrupted by another loud band as a large bird flies overhead and crashes to the ground (via a projection effect) Upon inspecting the scene we find ourselves within Little Paris which is the rat constructed city that exists as a suburb of Zootopia. The bird is actually Flick's bird from Bug's Life. Several ants come scurrying out.
It is here where we get the coolest perspective moment of the ride. The larger buildings of Zootopia loom overhead in the background, while the smaller buildings of Little Paris along with the toothpick Eiffel Tower are closer to our rat's eye perspective (which can shift from scene to scene depending on the practicality...)
Skinner shows up towering over the Little Paris building wielding an old fashion hunting rifle similar to the one wielded by the old woman at the start of the film. We see a whole colony of 6 inch tall ant AAs scurry away and dozens of rats panicking as Skinner looms overhead.
We hear the screech of an eagle as Marahute from Rescuers Down Under swoops down and grabs Skinner by the shoulders.
"Noooo!!!", Skinner years as he is carried off. "The rats, they're getting away!"
A single feather falls down off the eagle as we come to the unload which is the back alley of Gusteau's. Scuttle from Little Mermaid and Orville the Albatross are cracking wise at us as we exit the ride and proceed into Gusteau's gift shop connected to the exit.
Adventures Beyond the Kitchen is certainly an ambitious project. I left the storyline purposefully vague and instead of concentrating on a large scale arc tying everything together I simply had fun with the idea of different Disney characters bouncing off of each other. Basically Skinner hunting down Remmy causes all the other animals to panic resulting in all the characters crossing paths with each other.
The attraction will be housed in a three story show building to save space. The opening descant down the drain will go under the rail road tracks and behind the berm. As mentioned, a combination of screens, projections, and AAs will make for a completely all encompassing experience. In spite of the ride vehicles being themed to mice, that doesn't completely limit the perspective.
One of the unique things about the
Little Paris play area is the fact that it's recreated inside the E tciket attraction. I took this cue from Radiator Springs Racers which features a recreation of the main town. The toothpick Eifel Tower will serve as the main tower and centerpoint to the playground, with various articles of "garbage" acting as surrounding theme and play structures. Just beyond that lies Colette's Fashion Boutique and La Ratatouille.
La Ratatouille combines classic French cuisine with an African twist and flair. Think of the menu as Boma and the dining options in the France world showcase pavilion in a blender. While Gusteau's is themed as a tasteful continuation of the franchise and houses the e ticket, this real eatery is themed as a partnership between Linguini and Anton Ego. Guests can often get meet and greets and book signings with the renowned food critic and his head chef.
Skinner's Rat Trap is themed around a giant block of Swiss cheese with various different death traps waiting inside. The track is a fairly standard spinning wild mouse in the same vein as Primeval Whirl. Guests can smell the cheese as the whirl through the ride and avoid Skinner's obstacles such as nets, flying knifes, and springing mouse traps. This will make a generally off-the-shelf ride stand out a lot more.
Finally in the center of the courtyard is the double decker
Antropha-Merry-Go-Round. This large scale carousel features a HUGE collection of different Disney animals. Some examples are...
-Bambi
-Dumbo
-Dancing Hippo
-Lucifer
-Tramp
-Pongo and Perdita
-Baloo
-Thomas O'Malley
-Scuttle
-Simba
-Chief Bogo
-Maximus
-Kenai
-Cyrill
-Louie the Gator
And many, MANY more!
As you walk around the cobblestone lined courtyard and take in the light Parisian music and the blend of cultures within the architecture, Ratatopia promises a very peaceful and serene land experience surrounding the excitement of the coaster and E tickets. It is the ultimate Imagineering project that blends together the entire Disney universe. Anyone can cook, indeed!
