The Sad, Sad Tale of Marvel Super Hero Island

Why don’t they expand it? Seems like it would be a smash hit. They’ve shown they’re willing to invest in it with the massive refurbs on Spider-Man and Hulk.
There were rumors about 5 or 6 years back that Uni was going to add an Iron Man ride (I think it was a coaster). But then they didn't.

As for why not expansion? I know not. Those in the know have said that the original contract, which we've seen, was updated. But we haven't seen the update. So, who knows now what can or can't be done.

This brings me back to the time they had built an indoor Marvel park at Niagara Falls and just after the Disney purchase they had to change the attractions to be Non-Marvel..

Here's the best one for example Spiderman The Ultimate Ride..

Aannd...Adventure City's Super Hero Laser Battle....

Marvel superhero island is actually one of the best theme park lands I know. Heck. Literally all of the lands at IOA overrule other parks. Even toon lagoon is massively well done.
I'm curious as to why you'd rank it so highly. Spider-Man is the only stand out part of the land IMO, it's still one of my favorite rides in any park. Hulk, Storm & Doom are all still fun but they're showing their age; especially Hulk since there's a better version of that ride right across the lagoon now.

I've never liked the theming; I would've preferred the whole land to be a stylized version of NYC with all of the iconic Marvel buildings like the Daily Bugle, Baxter Building, Sanctum Santorum, etc... The giant cutouts of the characters just plastered onto buildings is so lame IMO.

Marvel's fantastical version of NYC has a lot of potential for an immersive, highly detailed land & I don't think Superhero Island does that. But I guess they at least tried unlike Disney who made a bunch of boring gray buildings.

My ideal Marvel land would be something similar to Hogsmeade & Diagon Alley with all of the characters/live entertainment that Avengers Campus has. The Campus is boring as hell visually, but the amount of characters that populate it is pretty cool.

While the idea is it's a "comic book come to life" aspect..it only works as your heading towards Toon Lagoon...Coming from the opposite side doesn't work too well IMO.

Yeah, I sort of realized that the last time I was there. It's sort of like you're walking through an actual comic book, not the characters' world. Maybe that'd work if the whole park was like that but Jurassic Park, Potter, Seuss & Lost Continent (RIP) are all highly themed & set in those characters' worlds.

I think the scale of New York is extremely challenging to accomplish in a theme park. You would need multiple Tower of Terror-scaled buildings to make it work. The New York section of USF is close to working, but notice how any tall iconic building is done with flats while the buildings are all 4-6 stories tall.

Daily Bugle, Avengers Tower, any Stark Industries building would all need to be much taller than that if a more realistic MCU-style art direction was chosen.

I really enjoyed the Spider-Man ride and the Avengers coaster at Disney Studios Paris. Both greatly exceeded my modest expectations. But I think they both exemplify the practical limitations of the MCU in a theme park.

Marvel Super Hero Island is not perfect, but I think it really works as a cohesive version of a larger scale super hero-themed land.

It would definitely be hard but I believe either the Imagineers or Uni's team could find a way to recreate NYC in a satisfying way. Or at least find a fictional setting like Wakanda, Asgard or Latveria (Dr Doom's nation) to use; anything is better than what IOA & California Adventure have.

I just want to be immersed in the Marvel universe. IOA's Marvel land doesn't do that for me besides the Spidey ride itself & it doesn't seem like Avengers Campus will either.

Without being an expert in Marvel at all, I think you are likely to be correct about Wakanda--the scale, materials, and scenery are likely to be achievable in a theme park setting (if my memory from the movies is correct).

I would hesitate to agree about Latveria being a desirable locale to recreate in a theme park. Even if the architectural scale is doable, would you really want to spend time having fun in a recreation of a repressive totalitarian country? That is part of why Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is less than fully successful. Hogsmeade it is not.

I fact, I think Six Flags' various DC-villain themed coasters are instructive here. Sure, you can recreate the Joker's warehouse, a dangerous neighborhood of Gotham City, or Mr. Freeze's lair. But when you do, you've created a fairly repellant space. Not the kind of place you want to linger in (Halloween Horror Nights is a fair reputation of this point, but I maintain that it is a niche product.)

Marvel Super Heroes could inspire many great rides, but I don't think they make a good source material for a Harry Potter-style immersive land, either for the lack of visual uniqueness, scale, or unpleasantness.

Six Flags doesn't even theme their rides anymore.

I was thinking, what if Universal buys the rights to Sonic for IoA in addition to Nintendo?? Would that even work?? Or would Disney have to reclaim them (Sonic and the gang used to be in Innoventions in the '90s.)

How about Metal Gear Solid?? Would that work for Universal?? I need a Solid Snake walkaround character I can flirt with...

I can see Universal going in heavily with video games after the success of both the Mario lands & movie. I don't think Disney will go after them since they seem to only want to use their own IPs now; they don't want to have to pay third party licensing fees.

What you mention about theme park rights really depends on the Nintendo theme park right contract terms. I couldn't find out if those terms prevent other Video game companies to put their IPS in Universal theme parks.

Sonic is a caution to the wind. I grew up when that franchise was at its peak. While the Sonic movies are hit movies, the video game side has pointed Sonics peak in popularity back in the 1990s, not in this decade.

As far as Metal Gear Solid goes, I doubt Universal would be after that series. Universal got Nintendo theme park rights because Universal wants to attract more guests from a certain age group and Metal Gear Solid does not attract that age group. Nintendo IPS are able to attract people from different age groups including kids and that is a Universal theme park weakness that Universal is trying to fix.

Not every property works in a theme park setting.
