Glad someone on here besides me remembers the Great Locomotive Chase. I first watched it when I was 9 (17 now) and it's still a great movie. Of course, I had no idea that ol' Fess "Davy" Parker played Andrews 'till a few years later. :D

I know of it, but I have actually yet to SEE it. Would love to, but no store carries a copy of it even though it's still in print (with a print that is sadly not enhanced for 16x9 TVs). I'll try Amazon or ebay despite my lack of interest in buying things online.

Hey not even the HD version does Original Aspect Ratio, the only shows in HD is some of the new animated series (love Phineas and Ferb) and that is it. Not even Pocahontas was on 16:9...

It doesn't have to be HD, just gold old fashioned letterboxing like TCM does. Although I'm not to sure about the whole switch to HD thing that is mandatory for TV stations in the future.

Ok, time to stand out like a sore thumb...

I'm 33 years old and I'm a massive fan of Old School Disney, both the animated classics and the live action films. I never had Disney Channel growing up, as a matter of fact I had never even seen it until about two years ago, but thanks to Wonderful World of Disney I have some very fond memories of watching the animated classics and live action films on TV as a child and they were a big part of my childhood. I hope and pray that we never lose sight of those films and characters as they are the heart of Disney.

Walt was known for his belief that we should keep one foot firmly planted in the past so that we will always know where we came from and learn from and appreciate the past but at the same time he strongly believed in keeping things fresh and making sure that things are constantly evolving and changing.

As a relative newbie to The Disney Channel I must admit I was very disappointed in the lack of classic Disney in the programming but It's not a big deal for me since I've never known otherwise. I have a quite extensive collection of Disney DVDs so if I want to watch The Old Mill, So Dear To My Heart, The Alice Shorts, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, Song Of The South, Lady and The Tramp, etc. all I've gotta do is pop a disc in the DVD player. I have learned to appreciate the programming on The Disney Channel and my wife and I are huge fans of Hannah Montana(both the music and the show).

One of my biggest pet peeves in life are those annoying people who think they are "too hip for the room" and they think that anything with wide commercial appeal is "mindless drivel served up to the brainwashed masses who have no taste so they don't know any better". Those people are so sad to me, they have gotten so caught up in being "edgy" and "enlightened" that they have forgotten how to appreciate things at their basic level. These people honestly think that they are more intelligent than me just because they listen to (insert current edgy, artsy, indie artist here)and love to watch(insert whatever edgy, independent, artsy film is popular amongst intellectuals right now). These are the people that look down on me with pity because I love to watch Hannah Montana and listen to Hannah, Miley and the Jonas Brothers(we have...and enjoy...all of thier CDs)...because I just don't know any better.

Folks, I can appreciate both Old School and New School Disney programming, it all has it's place. I in no way view Hannah, Suite Life and High School Musical with the same awe and esteem that I do Disney animation but I can still appreciate it none the less. While I'm at it, let me say that I think Hannah Montana is the best written comedy on TV right now and every member of the cast has brilliant comedic timing, especially Miley Cyrus and Jason Earles. This show isn't just mindless drivel, it truly is a hilarious show that does a great job of entertaining both the tweens it is geared toward AND their parents...all while incorporating a great moral lesson into each episode(GASP!...how dare they be so unrefined!).

My solution...Disney should keep it's current programming on one channel and focus on Old School Disney on the other channel so we can all have...wait for it..."The Best Of Both Worlds". Since music plays such a huge role on The Disney Channel right now I think it would be a great idea to also convert one of the channels over to strictly music based programming.

Now, if you'll excuse me I'm going to finish watching the Hannah Montana:Best of Both Worlds Concert with my wife while we wait for our High School Musical DVDs to arrive in the mail. :D

Oh, by the way, for those of you who are dumb enough (like me)to actually enjoy well crafted pop music...be sure to pick up the new Miley Cyrus Breakout CD, it's one of the best pure pop CDs to come down the pipe in years.

#1 - Since when have Disney fanatics been considered, or ever considered themselves, "edgy"?

#2 - It's not about getting "caught up in being edgy". It's about knowing what sucks and what doesn't.

I have learned to appreciate the programming on The Disney Channel.

You shouldn't have to learn to appreciate it. You should be able to appreciate it if it's any good. Saying you had to learn to sounds like Big Brother got to you.

I'm so sorry.

I miss the old Disney Channel too! Miss the old cartoons and whatnot. When were last the DW, they had a TV going in the lobby that was showing old Disney cartoons and it made me really miss them. I wish they'd bring it back.

Disney needs to make a Vault Disney channel—their version of Turner Classic Movies. The network could alternate cartoons, television shows, and feature-length Disney films through daytime and primetime; then it could air classic Touchstone films after 9:00 pm. I'm willing to bet the channel would be extremely popular. Plus, the Disney channel could continue to evolve (as it should).

#1-I wasn't referring specifically to Disney fans, I was referring to people in general.

#2-What sucks and what doesn't suck is relative, it depends solely on each individuals personal taste. When God himself gives me a stone tablet stating "Thou shalt hate Hannah Montana ,for she is evil", I will start rethinking things. Until then, there is no definitive list of what does and doesn't suck, I and I alone will be the judge of what does and doesn't suck for me.

#3-You are misinterpreting my use of the word learn...I had to LEARN to appreciate it because of a preconcieved notion of what Disney Channel's programming consisted of. I expected primarily Old School programming and was initially frustrated due to my expectations. Once I realized that I wouldn't be seeing Old School programming I learned to appreciate the programming for what it is...and isn't. Even if Hannah Montana were on a different channel I would still love the show. I am a free agent and tend to be quite the nonconformist myself(when it's not just for the sake of being non conformist and actually makes sense), therefore I like what I like because I genuinely like it, not because someone told me it was cool or hip, I can assure you that "Big Brother" has nothing to do with it.

#4-So am I...so very sorry that people can't be themselves and genuinely enjoy something without a cynical and jaded minority accusing them of being brainwashed.:(

Exactly! The programming could consist of the following...

Classic Disney Shorts
Classic full length animated films from Snow White to Home On The Range and all points in between.
Reruns of the original Mickey Mouse Club, Davy Crockett, Zorro, The Hardy Boys, etc.
Classic live action films like The gy Dog, That Darn Cat!, Summer Magic, Swiss Family Robinson, Herbie, Johnny Tremaine, etc.
House of Mouse episodes(and it's previous incarnations)

The switch is to Digital transmission not HD. HD is just a higher version of Digital TV. Some movies like Cinerama or Panavision will still have the Black lines on top and bottom of the screen as of opposite to left right (like in some 16:9 sets) I would love to see Fantasia in HD.

Now as of some of the old Disney shows... well they will look stunning but thats it. Unless they filmed and now a Digital transfer will be amazing.

I'm only 23, but thank god I grew up when I did. All of the shows now-a-days seem so low quality compared to the ones when I was growing up.

Loved the old channel.
I remember when it shut off at midnight every night-and just had the Disney channel icon shwoing until it came back on at 6am.
I loved Danger Bay
and I really like the shorts in between the shows like
"Imagine" that showcased diferrent technologies used at Epcot with the host Eric B-something.

I am with all of you, I miss watching shows like Under The Umbrella Tree, Ducktales, Brotherly Love, The Famous Jett Jackson. Also later at night they would have Flipper, Lassie , Zorro and other classics like that. For toons I think Toon Disney sometimes shows Talespin and Goof Troop but that is about it. I would love to see new Disney channel, maybe part of digital cable, that has all the old shows.

I Think the new shows are ok on TDC. My kids do enjoy them, and as someone pointed out, to them THIS will be thier cherished Disney Channel Memories. Its all about perspective. There should be a place for both.

I do think the Vault Disney Channel concept would work quite well. TVLand has shown that. And yes eventually TVLand did change its programming and if VDC came to be, it will have to adapt and change becasue more people will have different memories.

Right now there is NO outlet other then YouTube to watch the old shows. I think Disney is missing out on serviceing a segment of its fanbase by not providing it.

Great memories and discussion though. Thanks to everyone for keeping it friendly and fun!
