They're all intriguing  and we do our best to imitate, though it never sounds right.

The only exception I've known is my cousin April, who, one time, having been stopped for directions by a British couple, answered back in their own accent. They exclaimed how refreshing it was to find someone from home, and apologized for stopping her since she likely didn't know the area any better than they did. :king: Now THAT is a good imitation. She assured them she knew the area quite well, directed them on their way, and had a good laugh (and a pat on the back).

Now that's talent

I found this site to be very interesting.
This will be very useful in the Word Association thread.

I'm baffled, why is it that british accents are so cool?? Or is it only posh british accents? I am a Sussex girl born and bred but I can do a good cockney accent, are they cool too? Cor blimey guv'nor!!

No Pippa, I would lay off the Cockney...that is the British equivalent of a New York accent...not quite nails on blackboard, but....certainly not melodic. As far as other accents, we Yanks tend to take them as signs of sophistication, suave and debonnaire.

Now when you get go off to the west toward Wales...that gaelic...
it hurts my mouth to even try to make the sounds the collections of letters seem to make (with pronunciation having nothing to do with the letters  )

And yes Stranger, a real (soft) spanish accent is fine...just not the spanglish we hear too often.

Now lets get back to that travelling chap....any more reported sightings? How about a report from Rob...they were supposed to join forces, weren't they?

I miss the old chap as well. I haven't had the time to talk to him personally, but enjoy reading all of his posts and get a good laugh out of them too.

(I'm a northerner with a southern accent to those up here, but in the south they say I have a southern/Chicagoan accent). How about that....anyone find that sexy?

My girlfriend has a bit of a joisey accent and shes lived in northern IL her whole life...weird.

Edit: from the above posted link on English to British words, I found this would have to be changed here in the US to be PC. "Cigarette:______"

Started laughing right away Rob, was it your driving, evening adventures or just general dynamic presence? After he gets home an (can try to) defend himself, you should start a thread of "Travels with Barnum" (then later add that chapter to your book - just before the SF years... ) I would really enjoy seeing Barnum "off balance"...I'm sure he will deny the whole thing.

My driving... definitely my driving.

To quote him

"If I ever move here, remind me to NEVER buy a second-hand car from you"

I know what you mean, if you ever watch the british soap East Enders their accents are dreadfully common sounding! It is a national joke to yell " Riiiiiiiicccckkkkkkkkkyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy" down a street! The brits will know what I mean

Nice try, but I'm originally from Queens...the upstate Monroe accent (Orange County, anything above Yonkers is upstate ) is actually quite annoying.

I miss Barnum, too! !!!! (I just love that word...find it so very amusing!) Maybe it is the British thing I like. I became facinated with all things British after seeing "My Fair Lady" in high school. I own it on DVD and watch it all the time. Ever noticed how a British accent can make even the ugliest man sexy here in the states? Look at Hugh Grant.....not ugly, but not exactly gorgeous either. But I LOVE him! He is in the sequal to "Bridget Jones' Diary" .."Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" that comes out in November. I can not wait!!!!! Gotta see it the first day. I love Colin Firth, too. Very sexy.

Makes me miss Barnum even more.
