This is a long post, and not intended to be inflammatory at all...

I'm curious as to where Florida? Did you see first hand any of the damage from Charley? Have you actually been to Punta Gorda and seen it for yourself? Was your home damaged? Has your income been affected? Did you go for days on end without power or water in your home?
I do not think PhotoDave or anyone is trying to alarm anyone. People are on edge, and one thing that helps is to talk about it. People have been brought here with a common interest and reading/posting here may be a healthy outlet for them to help them keep their cool. If you feel it is alarming, please read something else; if you have something valuable to contribute or can benefit from the information, then by all means utilize the forum as such.
As you said, this is the time to prepare, and part of the panic is that there are limited supplies to prepare with. I know of a family in Hobe Sound, Florida who has been without power and water since Frances (today is Day 6 for them). She has 3 children, and very little gas in her car to go anywhere. There have been no relief stations set up yet in Hobe Sound, so she is making do with what she has the best she can. Who is panicked in that case? Her mother, whom I work with, who is not sure what will happen to them now. Her mother is living in a tarped house that is leaking. She's not literally panicked, but she's not doing well.
Everybody has their own circumstances, and I hope rather than argue we can just support each other and not attack anyone.
