The Official Hurricane Ivan thread...

I'm curious as to where Florida? Did you see first hand any of the damage from Charley? Have you actually been to Punta Gorda and seen it for yourself? Was your home damaged? Has your income been affected? Did you go for days on end without power or water in your home?

I do not think PhotoDave or anyone is trying to alarm anyone. People are on edge, and one thing that helps is to talk about it. People have been brought here with a common interest and reading/posting here may be a healthy outlet for them to help them keep their cool. If you feel it is alarming, please read something else; if you have something valuable to contribute or can benefit from the information, then by all means utilize the forum as such.

As you said, this is the time to prepare, and part of the panic is that there are limited supplies to prepare with. I know of a family in Hobe Sound, Florida who has been without power and water since Frances (today is Day 6 for them). She has 3 children, and very little gas in her car to go anywhere. There have been no relief stations set up yet in Hobe Sound, so she is making do with what she has the best she can. Who is panicked in that case? Her mother, whom I work with, who is not sure what will happen to them now. Her mother is living in a tarped house that is leaking. She's not literally panicked, but she's not doing well.

Everybody has their own circumstances, and I hope rather than argue we can just support each other and not attack anyone. :)

Michelle - I appreciate your post, but please do not turn this into a peeing contest over who knows more people with damage.

Yes, my home and my entire apartment complex was damaged substantially by Charley - I didn't have power for over a week. My friend's entire complex was CONDEMNED - yes, CONDEMNED and once again, he too is a student, luckily his family is a lot closer than mine but still - he had absolutely no place to go.

I live by myself - a million miles away from anyone who even knows my name. I saw what happened first hand during Charley and then I also witnessed EVERY one of my friends actually LEAVE the state to flee from the oncoming hurricane of Frances that due to media hype was blown up to massive proportions and ended up being no more than a heavy rain storm for my area.

I talked to my 70 year old Grandma on my dying cellphone during the storm. She was crying her eyes out because the Weather Channel had painted a picture of sheer hell in Florida. She was, in effect - completely terrorized.

So please, everyone, hurricanes are tough on everyone, please do not try and "one-up" me. I don't care how many you've lived through - this isn't about that. I would assume that if you've lived through so many you'd learn by now that you CANNOT predict exactly what a storm is going to do so far out.

Like I said a million times over, my problem is not with PhotoDave or any of the threads or posters here (and please do not spin this into that) but rather with the uninformed public going apeshoot over something that in this stage of the game is no more than theory.

I just have to say that I agree with the fact that the media overdoes any kind of "reporting" so much that I don't even watch the olds - I refuse to call it the news because it's usually the exact same thing over and over, night after night. For the hurricanes, I prefer to watch the tracks online (which I download using "Tracking the Eye") and make my own judgement. If an evacuation is called for here in Brunswick, like during Floyd, I'll still know about it because of my over-panicked friends and neighbors. Then I'll just run up to my parents house 80 miles inland.

I do however have concern about whatever may happen in Florida. Like I have mentioned in other threads, I have family throughout the state, from Ft. Myers and Sarasota to Gainesville, with the majority of my dad's family only 30-40 miles north of WDW in Lake County.

I was in no way trying to "one up" you, nor did I claim to live through an extensive number of storms.

I was trying to get an idea of what your experience had been. Your post to me appeared to be maybe written from the point of view of someone who had not experienced the impact of the first storm, or someone who had been desensitized, which the media has done an effective job in doing (imo anyway). I am sorry if it came off in the wrong way, but like I said, I was not trying to "one up" you, and I am sorry for the losses you and your friends have suffered.

See, and that, Michelle, is where we completely disagree.

I don't think people are *desensitized* - I think that they are driven stark raving mad by this. I think that the media does a good job of completely driving people insane and terrorizing them to the point where the FLEE the state over a hurricane that is a week away from even hitting!

I'm sorry if I came off in the wrong way with you too Michelle. You seem like a nice person and I hope we can still get along and whatnot on the boards.

Well, we might not disagree after all, lol, because I agree with that.
I actually think there are two ways the media coverage can impact a person -- desensitize them, or like you said, drive them mad. We just identified them both, but took the long way getting there.

 Wow. I guess we do. Hahaha.

I cannot thank you enough for actually reading my posts and responding intelligently and not just "ignoring" me. You rock!

That is the funniest thing I have ever heard, media terrorism

Why thanks.

Watch out for those killer bees, shark attacks, car jackings and tropical storms. You'll need LOTS and LOTS of duct tape and water jugs. Because ya know, all of those are preventable.

I find it very sad that Fox affiliate in Orlando has commercials on that are basically bragging that "they has reporters out in the storms" and they are "here for us" because of that.

To quote one of the reporters from that VERY station the night of the storm.

"Yeah, Jeff, the winds aren't bad actually - BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULDN'T BE AFRAID."

Yeah. Whatever.

Yeah. Whatever.

It is so sad that a natural disaster has become an opportunity to pad the ratings.

If we are not allowed to price gouge (in the hotel industry) they should not be allowed to basically do the same thing.

I don't really think we need 24 hour coverage on EVERY station 2 days before and 2 days after the storm.......it is a bunch of crap!

WERD.

We canceled school for a WEEK. Yes, a week. The last time we had class was Wednesday and the "hurricane" at that point wasn't even set to hit til almost Sunday.

I guess people outside of Orlando don't really understand how much this has been shoved down our throats.

Amen. :)

Is there a need for EVERY station to launch into Panic Mode now? No. If it hangs a right and heads straight for Miami Beach, then, yes, begin REASONABLE coverage. But really, is even that needed? One would think that just about everyone in Florida knows what to do by now.

With that said, I really hope it doesn't head for Florida. :lookaroun

Not a "neg rep point" - but you have to understand that almost EVERYTHING closed like at least by Friday and nothing re-opened until almost Monday, even Tuesday for some places.

The entire city becomes a ghost town and like speck said, EVERY station is trying to to each other trying to tell you how much worse the storm is going to be according to their station.

I think I have a video encoded of one of Brutha Jeb's speeches if I can find it somewhere...
