The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

I didn't talk about this in my Galaxy's Edge review, because it wasn't related to Galaxy's Edge, but I went through Tropical Hideaway again because my buddy hadn't seen it yet, and I have to say that the area is just really well done. It's proof for me that Disney can actually make something that feels like it belongs in the parks.

Not surprised some people that post here are not happy with the Ariel casting choice 🙄

Not sure who this comment is supposed to be referring to, but I'll weigh in.

I'm not unhappy with the casting choice- more indifferent, since I'm not emotionally invested in this remake in any way. There's really no one I can think of where I'd say "Yes! She should play Ariel!" since to me, the character already exists in an animated form.

For me, the only issue I'd have is that I tend to be a purist when it comes to Disney- and as a general rule of thumb, when Disney changes something or reimagines something, they make it worse than it was before. In film, this is less of a big deal since you an typically go back and watch the original (except for a few exceptions where high quality versions of the original films aren't available). In theme parks, this is a bigger deal since once something's changed, it's changed forever unless it's super easy to reverse the change.

My only complaints with the Hideaway are the misspelled name on the bird perch, the voice actress for Rosita, and the font used for the menu and signage.

Which basically means the project is a home run and is far better than what preceded it. One of the few Stardust changes I don't think was a bust.

Netflix needs a Theme Park-like Intro screen ready for Premiere days like today:

“The following attractions are currently unable to operate: STRANGER THINGS 3”

I was able to watch the first 1 1/2 episodes before the system got overloaded. Great so far.

Reminds me I have to watch season 2 and season 1 over again.

Looks like another bomb for the live action Disney movies.

As a redhead I cannot emphasize enough how much I hate this casting. Ariel is a Danish story and it makes no sense to change that in the live action. They didn’t put Lion King in Ireland. Disney made her a redhead and she should remain a redhead. I loved having a red haired princess when I was being teased for my hair and pale skin as my daughter now is. My kids didn’t understand the casting in the park’s Frozen and they won’t understand this. I really don’t understand where they are going with this. You can’t have iconic characters not looking like they’re supposed to for little kids. My son’s favorite princess was Tiana and if she had been blonde he would’ve said she wasn’t Tiana. We’ve never met a beautiful blonde Snow White at the park. They cast the face characters for M&G to look like the characters. After this comes out is red haired Ariel out? This actress, like the Ana in the park’s Frozen, are obviously talented and should star in their own stories. This Halle would have been perfect as Tiana.

Who said her hair won’t be red? Also, the Danish background went out the window when Disney made the animated version in the 80’s. There’s no distinct Danish culture present in the film, the movie is nothing like the original content. Everyone has American accents, except Sebastian, who is black/Jamaican, so based on that, the story takes place somewhere in America.

Halle was chosen due to her incredible vocal talent and Disney believes she can pull off the acting job as well.

Sure they can dye her hair red but what about keeping the magic alive for the kids? There’s a reason they have always the actors for the M&G look like their characters. When they walk around the parks you know who they are and that’s why kids want to meet them. I love seeing the magic of my kids greeting these characters. It’s such a special thing that will only last such a small time where they believe. My daughter was obsessed with Frozen and so excited to meet them and then very confused about the musical. You can’t have the characters available to meet and then walk over and see a show that looks nothing like them. That’s what’s going to happen with this casting.

Disney always changes things when they make their version but that does not change the fact that it is a Danish story. There’s a reason why the Danish have had their mermaid sculpture in Copenhagen for 100 years. I assume that’s why they have Ariel on the rock in the film as an homage. If it wasn’t for Darryl Hannah in Splash she would have been a blonde mermaid because she’s Danish. They don’t have accents in Frozen or Tangled, and they are not in America, because that’s not what Disney is going for. Sebastian could have hitched a ride but really the animated movies are not steeped in authenticity, again lack of accents.

I'm just curious, why would you think they would change the M&G's in the parks to be the live action version of the characters as opposed to using the same animated version of the characters they've always used? I mean its not like we've gotten any live action version of any of the characters so far, so why would it change now for TLM?

I’m not saying they will. I am saying that they have, with the exception of the Frozen musical, cultivated the look of the iconic characters. Kids easily recognize them and the M&G reflect that. Halle does not look like Ariel of the animated version. Which one is the “real” Ariel? Because to my 6 year old princesses are real and Dumbo can fly. She still wants to be a mermaid when she grows up. She met Rey at Disneyland along with Mary Poppins and all the other characters. She still tells me stories she heard at these M&G, like Flynn telling her Rapunzel was running late because of how many hours she spends brushing her hair and Sally was also late another time because she was sewing on her arm. Kids believe and it’s magical. There is only one look for these characters.

Doesn’t Disney take this so seriously that dead characters are not even allowed in GE? The Sonic movie just went into extensive revisions because Sonic, a blue hedgehog, did not look right to his fan base and he was still a blue hedgehog. There is a look to iconic characters.
