The Miscellaneous Thought Thread

I thought this quote would be relevant to this discussion:

“I didn’t treat my youngsters like frail flowers, and I think no parent should. Children are people, and they should have to reach to learn about things, to understand things, just as adults have to reach if they want to grow in mental stature. Life is composed of lights and shadows, and we would be untruthful, insincere, and saccharine if we tried to pretend there were no shadows. Most things are good, and they are the strongest things, but there are evil things, too, and you could do a child no favor by trying to shield it from reality. The important thing is to teach a child that good can always triumph over evil, and that is what our pictures do.” –Walt Disney
Not only relevant to this discussion, but also relevant in today's world, IMHO.

It’s relevant because if you don’t have kids I could see why you would have no idea what little kids understand. The diversity of the world that my kids see everyday has nothing to do with character consistency. I’m not sure if I’ve offended you as an apparent GE fan or if you missed my point. If it’s the latter it was obviously a relevant point that people were willing to wait in longer lines to meet the new princesses than they are to do anything at GE because characters are a big deal.
I think the diversity of the world DOES involve character consistency if you are going to bring up the topic of how a young black woman SHOULDN'T play a fictional mermaid! Halle deserves the role! Have you heard her sing?! She is an angel. Her race shouldn't matter! I am not a huge SW:GE fan and not a huge SW fan in general. What I was trying to say was that you are comparing a whole LAND with many things to do with ONE M&G. The comparison is not on point. Please think about the things you say before you post them. This isn't time for hate on a 19 year old girl who is living the dreams of being a Disney Princess.

You never answered my question. How do you explain Mall Santa’s that obviously each look different to your kids?

You’re right kids aren’t stupid, so don’t treat them as they are. A child can understand the difference between “the real character” and an actor playing a part. It’s all in how you explain it to them. Like mall Santa’s, those are Santa’s helpers since Santa can’t be at every mall because he is making toys.

Children, just like adults, are all different. Some are more observant, while others retain their sense of awe and naivete for longer.
I remember my little brother being the first to notice the little details and recognizing what was real and what was fake, since around the age of 5. Imagine my surprise when he started pointing at zippers and wigs on characters in costumes!
Many years later, he told me that when he was a kid, he sometimes pretended to not understand many things, when in fact, he did.

I am a bit surprised Zendaya didn't get the part as rumored... for a few reasons.

She has a working relationship with Disney... and has for years, from Disney Channel to her part in the Marvel films.

She's a proven singer and has been for years. But most importantly, she's a proven actress. She's demonstrated that she knows how to act and sing in a large budget musical with The Greatest Showman.

Halle Bailey has a moderately successful Youtube singing duo, but only two acting credits- one in a film from 2006, and another far more recent one as a character in the TV show Grown-ish. I think Zendaya would be the far safer bet in terms of both experience, but the added benefit of 'star power' she'd bring to the film and marketing campaign. Being able to sing is only half the battle- acting in a large budget film for Disney is quite a bit different than a sitcom, so I'm very curious to see how she does.

It is nice to see Disney take some kind of risk on a newcomer to Hollywood with this film, since The Walt Disney Company today tends to be quite risk adverse. She must have nailed the audition to get them to pick her instead of the many other talented singers and actors in Hollywood.

Zendaya’s vocals aren’t up to par when compared to Halle Bailey’s. Apparently Menken was blown away by her singing audition.

Love me some Zendaya though.

In response to growing online criticism and in an effort to ensure the movie’s success in the Asian market, Disney will now have Ariel played by a chubby Chinese man. ;)

No matter how much I would like to see Zendaya in a shell bra, I don't think she would do it.

Speaking of live action remakes, this looks alright.

I like the logo! The poster is really nice too.
