I don’t like the choice. I’ve said before if they want to represent diverse ethnicities and races than they should write the new stories with that in mind. I have no problem with Pocahontas, Tiana, Mulan, Miguel from Coco etc. but this is just silly. I would be equally weirded out by them casting Tiana as anyone other than a black woman.

Doesn’t really matter though. Most of the live action remakes suck.

You raise valid points... They would never cast a Mexican Mulan, white Miguel, or Asian Tiana... though I do think those characters and stories are far more a love letter to those cultures than The Little Mermaid is to the fishes, making those characters more intrinsically tied to their ethnicity than Ariel is.

To take it a step further- if they were to treat this new retelling of Little Mermaid as a new new retelling that goes back to the source material that relies on a completely new script and score, and isn't just a remake of the animated film, I wouldn't have any problem at all with the decision to reinvent the character.

That said- I assume the actress they hired is incredibly talented and I strongly suspect that if the movie sucks, it won't be because of her- I hated what Rob Marshall and his team did with Mary Poppins, so I'm not overly enthused about him being chosen to direct this film.

I just really really hope she can sing better than the Aladdin, Ariel, and Genie they hired for Aladdin, or Emma Watson in BatB. I hadn't heard that much autotune since Lil Wayne released his last album. o_O

Good points. I agree that she’s most likely a great actress and that Ariel’s role isn’t tied to the Danish culture but this is still a remake and Sebastian will be there and “Under the sea” will be sung and most people want to see actors that accurately portray the animated versions.

Lol yeah Emma Watson sucked. I didn’t see Aladdin because it looked terrible. It could be worse, they could just skip all the songs like they did with Cinderella.

I'm not sure if anyone here has ever read The Walking Dead comic book series, but I've been following it since I was 14. If you do read the comics and haven't read today's issue, spoiler ahead. Anyway, today's issue was something special as they unceremoniously released, without any announcement or build up, the final issue of the series. It was so nice to see this series that I've been reading once a month for the past six years come to a close in such a satisfying way.

Not DL, but I was at Epcot a few months to a year (can't remember) before Frozen Ever After got announced, was waiting in line for Maelstrom and it broke down and I made the decision to leave the line instead of wait it out.

Last time I went to Epcot before it closed I was in line for Maelstrom and it broke down just when I was about to board the boat! I knew it would be the last time, so I got back in line later that day and did manage to see it one more time.

She and her sister Chloe are actually very talented singers! Their group is signed under Beyonce’s label ( I’m sure she had some hand in her casting prob leverage from TLK). I do wonder why one twin and not the other since I find their voices to be pretty similar.

That being said I kinda agree in that I hope this remake is only in the name and maybe a few characters.

Sounds like Disney found their candidates for another reboot of The Parent Trap :angelic:
