Director and co-writer.
I totally get why she isn't some people's favorite, but I love her. There was something about Ladybird that made me very emotional about missing my mom. She was also really good in Greenberg and Frances Ha.

At first it was weird to think of her doing Barbie, but she is a good director and I have high hopes for it, given the films she is said to have recommended the cast and crew watch.

Edited to add: I can't help think of an alternate universe with Barbie directed by Sofia Coppola. Her Marie Antoinette makes me think she would have done a masterful job with it. I suppose it probably would have been too dark for Mattel.

I'm still shocked they are even allowing this to happen. They were so uptight about everything Barbie when we worked with them, to the point of always picking a blonde actress when we casted for motion capture.

Didn't like Frances Ha either. I have a thing about people who were raised comfortably playing at being poor. May have started with watching That Girl at a young age.

And the title! Comes from not having enough room for her whole name on her mailbox. How does she not know that you do First initial Last name, especially if you're a woman?

What others find charming I find irritating. Ok, rant over. Go about your business.

I understand. I haven't found anyone else who agrees with me and I have searched the internet for support. I found the character immensely unlikable. I'm also a curmudgeon about manic pixie dream girls.
She is annoying, but I think she’s purposefully written that way. I think the movie does a very good job at portraying young and annoying teenagers who think they’re sure in what they want but life happens and they’re taken on a different course. Lady Bird is irritating at times, but she’s got some depth.

Thank you. I can agree with that bigger picture and the point she was making. I just couldn't get past the character.

All I could see was she lies, she cheats, she steals, she's at least mildly racist, she treats her friends and family like trash but they still rally around her to give her what she wants instead of the discipline she needed. The first scene alone should have resulted in serious therapy and possibly being committed, not treated as a joke.

ETA it may be because I've known some real-life Lady Birds, lol. But the lead in "Never Have I Ever" was a similar type and yet I enjoyed that series. Go figure.

Oh, my gosh, I just read that list of films and now it all makes sense why I was so instantly attracted to Barbie the moment I watched the trailer last month. Almost all of those movies are fabulous favorites, and the ones that I wasn't familiar with (PlayTime, etc.) are now intriguing to me.

This all makes so much sense why Barbie is automatically hitting this weird cultural zeitgeist in people. Americans need a movie that is colorful and fun and hilarious and familiar, but that has real meaning and humanity. We needed Barbie and we didn't even know it.

Same reason we went crazy over the Lego Movie. Does that mean we get three more Barbie movies quickly afterwards?

I read that Mattel has a bunch of other movies to in the works also; Hot Wheels, Barney, etc. I doubt I'd go see Barbie II.

I can't wait to go with the family to see Barbie, and to get entirely appropriate and PG Rated use out of my Ken costume this Halloween.

But then I'm done.

Hasbro has plans for a Hasbro Cinematic Universe by combining Transformers and GI Joe then adding in MASK and ROM the Space Knight to the mix.

I learned in another thread that the Actors Guild has just called to go on strike immediately, joining the Writers Guild who has been on strike for over two months now. This effectively shuts down all movie and TV production in Southern California. And it's the first time there's been a double strike like this since 1960.

The last time only the Writer's went on strike was in 2007-08 and it cost the local LA economy $2 Billion in 2008 dollars due to limited production schedules. With both unions on strike and everything now shut down, this is going to be more impactful than '08 and noticeably damaging to the SoCal economy.

Does that mean the Water World stunt show is shut down? I guess stuntmen aren't on strike.

We must think of the multi-millionaires! Those actors just don't make enough money!

Oh, geez. What's even left at Universal Studios?...

I guess the rather nice tram tour, and that crazy Potter E TIcket where the very dark pre-show goes "BLAH BLAH BLAH SNICKERDOODLES AND HUFFLEPUFFS AND BLAH BLAH BLAH" and then they strap you into the ride like a weird industrial safety video and the ride throws you around with spiders and evil trees in the dark going "BLAH BLAH BLAH SNICKERDOODLES AND HUFFLEPUFFS BLAH BLAH". Also the Gadget's Go Coaster knockoff next door where a giant chicken flaps its wings at you at the base of the lift hill. Plus CityWalk and bowling.

Seriously, if they can't run Water World, why even go?
